Our guest this week is a Surfboard Shaper and Shop owner that found his love for Surfing in 1959. He surfed in the WSA’s as a Grom and was sponsored by Greg Noll. He found love for board building while living in Hawaii and worked for Greg, Mystic and Lightning Bolt Surfboards. When he moved back home he opened up his own factory Sakal Glassing and shaping boards for ET Surfboards and other shops and eventually opened up a retail store called “Bullit Surfboards” in Huntington Beach. He later changed the name to Sakal Surfboards and moved the shop to Downtown on Main Street where the shop is still located and family ran for the last 34 years. STRAIGHT OUTTA FRESNO!! This week’s guest grew up in Fresno and his family was in the agricultural business. He was a Skateboarder and spent his summers at Kennolyn Camp in Soquel Mountains of Santa Cruz. Sundays were spent on the beach, where Kelly found his love of Surfing. One summer he found himself at Portola Surf Shop owned and operated by Mike Locatelli. Fast forward a couple of years he partnered with Locatelli and opened On The Beach Surf Shop. Since 1986 Kelly Sorensen has been providing the best selection of products and excellent customer service. Like most independently owned small businesses, they have not only provided jobs to the local community but also contributed to charities, sponsorships and other philanthropic organizations. Our guest this week is Local Legend from Long Beach that caught his first wave 75 years ago. Living a nomadic life spending most his time surfing or playing beach volleyball, he has called Huntington Beach and North Shore Oahu his home for most of his life. He was one of the few charging Waimea and Pipeline in the 60’s and was a part of the Huntington Beach Surf Club in the early days. He has been a Jack of all trades, being a shop manager at Harbour SurfBoards, a journalist, School Teacher, and Real Estate Mogul. Our guest this week is a Hall of Fame Pro Surfer that finished #7 on the Championship Tour. With multiple career victories including the prestigious 1984 Pipeline Masters! In 1985 he founded the Professional Surfing Association of America (PSAA) tour. But from highs to lows, in just a few short years later, depression got the best of him. He hit rock bottom. Soon after, he gave his life to Jesus Christ and he couldn’t believe that his purpose in life was more than just winning Pipe Masters and that his Best has yet to come!!! For the last has 30 years he has been balancing both careers as Coach for the USA World Amateur Champion Team and others, as well as being a full-time Pastor, a guest speaker, an author, and a mentor focusing on our youth!
