Robocop (1987 and 2014)
11/28/2024
Send us a question!
As the conversation unfolds, we tackle the evolution of the RoboCop franchise, comparing the original's satirical edge to the more action-packed 2014 reboot. We muse over the reboot's attempt at nostalgia and the challenges posed by a PG-13 rating. From reminiscing about the classic's iconic scenes and sequels to debating the reboot's shift in tone, we leave no stone unturned. Along the way, we entertain the possibility of a RoboCop and Terminator crossover, humorously dubbed "Robonator," blending the best of both dystopian worlds.
Our discussion also takes a futuristic turn as we speculate on what lies ahead for RoboCop, particularly with modern themes like AI and machine learning on the rise. Imagine a version of RoboCop navigating today's media landscape, complete with social media and reality TV twists, while still delivering on the dark humor and societal critiques that made the original a cult favorite. We wrap up with a whimsical nod to other reboots and explore how embracing absurdity, much like the Fast and Furious franchise, could breathe new life into RoboCop.
Also, what happens when you mix the gritty world of RoboCop with the playful antics of the Muppets? Join us for a hilariously chaotic journey as we reimagine the 1987 classic through a Muppet-tinted lens. Picture Peter Weller as the human amidst plush robot parts, with Kermit as Ann Lewis and Miss Piggy in a delightfully unhinged role as Clarence Boddicker. And just to spice things up, we've cast Statler and Waldorf as the villainous duo of Dick Jones and the Old Man while Fozzie Bear tries to keep some semblance of order. It's a mash-up no one saw coming, but you'll be glad you did!
Tune in for laughter, thoughtful insights, and a generous dose of 'what if' scenarios that keep the conversation both engaging and entertaining.

Garfield
8/26/2024
Send us a question!
Is the new Garfield movie reboot worth your time, or just another nostalgia cash-in? Join us as we dissect the new characters Vic and Jinx, speculate on Garfield's father-son subplot, and debate whether Jinx might be more than she seems. We'll also voice our disappointment with the lack of adult humor and ponder the tropes and pitfalls common to children's movies.
How does Chris Pratt stack up against Garfield's iconic lazy persona? Our discussion heats up as we argue whether Nick Offerman would have been a better fit for the voice role. From the buddy dynamic of Garfield and Odie’s original film to the father-son reunion theme of the reboot, we evaluate which plot resonates more and share our mixed feelings about watching the movie with kids. Plus, we reminisce about the charm of actors like Hannah Waddington and Brett Goldstein, and critique the quality of the CGI rendering.
Lastly, we take a nostalgic journey through Garfield's rich history, from plush toys and comic strips to Sunday comics and the 1988 TV series. We touch on fascinating trivia, like the Easter egg of Garfield's comic strip debut date, and chuckle over the peculiar 90s trend of cartoon characters on car windows. As we wrap up, we share our excitement for a slew of upcoming movies and shows, including the much-anticipated Deadpool 4, Dog Man, and the Atlas series on Netflix. Don’t miss out on our lively debate and hearty laughs in this episode!Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched!

Ready to see your favorite "Mean Girls" characters in a new light? We've got you covered! Hairspray
4/26/2023
Send us a question!
🎶 GOOD MORNING BALTIMORE! 🎶
In this episode, we take a trip back to the swinging 60s with the John Waters classic: Hairspray.
Originally released in 1988, Hairspray follows the story of Tracy Turnblad, an overweight teen eager to earn a spot in the cast of the Corny Collins Show, a popular after-school TV program.
Tracy's journey gets her in trouble when she uses her popularity on the show to push for integration on the program—something no one at the studio is ready for.
The film was adapted for the stage as a Tony Award winning musical that opened in 2002, which was then adapted for the big screen in 2007. In the remake, the story remains largely unchanged, but the musical takes on a much lighter tone than the original film.

SURPRISE!
Our lost episode has been found!
We had left Matilda in shambles on the cutting room floor after we weren't able to get separate track audio for everyone. Through the magic of perseverance we finally finished editing this episode. It's got a very 'live' feel to it, and it went off the rails in ways that are hard to explain.
We hope you enjoy this slightly-longer-than-usual quasi-live episode of Rebooted, where we talk about many things, and sometimes Matilda. We'll be getting back to our regular schedule starting in May 2023.

Send help. The Rebooted studio has been overrun. There's a talking frog and a very angry pig outside the office demanding to speak with our producers. We think they want to commandeer the episode.
We'll hold them off as long as we can, but it may be too late. The Muppets are very persuasive.

Beauty and the Beast
3/9/2023
Send us a question!
In this episode, we collectively agree to ignore the elephant in the room, which is oddly guillotine shaped. No, this isn't Les Mis, it's Beauty & the Beast.
Originally released in 1991, Disney's take on the well known fairytale was an instant classic, and Belle arguably cemented herself as the greatest of all Disney princesses. (Though we'll admit Rapunzel is pretty great too). It's a musical adventure that's bursting with bangers, and a timeless quality that simply cannot be beat.
Of course, that didn't stop Disney from trying. The live action remake hit theaters in 2017 amid the opening salvo of live action renditions of our childhood favorites. Boasting new music, more character depth, and a surprising number of answers to all the plot holes we've pointed out over the years, it was the beginning of a new golden age for the Disney fairytale.
Then Pinocchio happened. But I suppose we've already covered that.

Mad Max
2/22/2023
Send us a question!
In this episode, we learn that Mel Gibson is actually Australian. Well, some of us do, anyway. Join us as we dive into the bizarre, post-apocalyptic classic Mad Max 2!
Originally released in 1981, The Road Warrior follows Max Rockatansky, a cynnical drifter who spends his days driving through the Australian putback trying to stay one step ahead of marauders who would do anything to steal his precious gasoline.
Running low on fuel, Max finds himself at a settlement under siege with plenty of gas to spare, and strikes up a deal to rid them of their bandit problem in exchange for a share of their fuel supply.
The 2015 reboot, Mad Max: Fury Road, we join an entirely different Max, who has been captured by the ruthless War Boys and turned into a walking blood bank.
When Furiosa, a member of the gang, absconds with the leader's many slave wives to escort them to the safety of the Green Place, Max is dragged into an action-packed chase across the desert that may prove to be his best chance to escape.

The Mummy
2/8/2023
Send us a question!
In this episode, we are all aboard the Brendan Fraser hype train and resurrecting an old favorite with The Mummy! (Do you see what we did there?)
The Fraser fronted remake debuted in 1999 as a goofy, Iniana Jones inspired action romp about a race across Egypt to uncover a long forgotten treasure. It spawned a multi-film franchise that includes eight titles (but only if you count the four direct-to-video Scorpion King spin-offs, and, we're not sure those are up to par).
In 2017, amid Marvel Mania, Universal tapped Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe for another remake intended to be the gritty, action-packed launch point of their own connected Dark Universe—a plan that failed quite spectacularly, if we're being honest.
The one saving grace, is that 2017's outing gave us Jake Johnson basically rehashing his role as Nick Miller from New Girl but as a treasure hunting soldier, so not a total loss.

Home Alone

Merry Christmas you filthy animal!
In this episode, we celebrate home invasion and child abandonment with the Christmas Classic: Home Alone.
Originally released in 1990, Home Alone follows everyone's favorite 8-year-old, Kevin McCallister as he fights off a pair of home invaders after his family accidentally left him, well, home alone.
The 2021 reboot, awkwardly titled Home Sweet Home Alone, is a desperate attempt to pack as much nostalgia as possible into a 90 minute block that really never should have happened.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre
11/16/2022
Send us a question!
In this episode, we take a roadtrip down to the Lone Star state to learn a valuable life lesson: Breaking and entering is bad, mmkay?
Originally released in 1974, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre follows a group of frieds who make a series of terrible life choices amid a distinct lack of chainsaw related deaths.
Almost fifty years later (yes, it's been that long), Leatherface is back with a new group of forgettable twenty-somethings and a chainsaw that is ready to go to work.
With a ham-fisted plot that seems desperate to mirror the return Jaime Lee Curtis in Halloween Kills, this requel leaves us wanting more, but we're all a little afraid of party busses now, so I guess that's something.

Pinocchio
11/2/2022
Send us a question!
The Walt Disney Company is up to their old tricks bringing us another remake that nobody asked for!
Originally released in 1940, Pinocchio was Disney's second animated feature and tells the story of a wooden puppet brought to life and his quest to become a real boy.
Fast forward 82 years—yes, it's that old. One of the interns found the original storyboard in a dusty corner of the illustrious vault they raided to launch Disney+, and instead of calling the Smithsonian, they called Tom Hanks.
One bad Italian accent and a gaggle of disturbingly expressive CGI animals later, you get...well, pretty much the exact same thing.

10/19/2022
Send us a question!
Your favorite film majors are back for season two! Oh, and Jake. He's here too. Join us as we kick off our next adventure with Invasion of the Body Snatchers!
Originally released in...well, technically it was 1958, but in the interest of transparency (and time), we started with Philip Kaufman's 1978 version featuring a cloud of space embryos and some unassuming flowers who decided they were going to conquer earth one emotionless clone at a time.
Remade (again) in 2007, Invasion ditches the hostile flora in favor of an alien disease that worms its way into people's brains, taking over their bodies while they sleep. Neither situation is what you'd call ideal, but at least this time around there's hope for a cure.

If it bleeds, we can kill it.
In this episode, we dive into the Arnold Schwarzenegger classic, Predator and its 2022 PREBOOT: Prey.
Originally released in 1987, Predator follows a group of highly trained and heavily armed commandos sent into a remote jungle to search for survivors of a helicopter crash only to find themselves hunted by a lethal and invisible alien foe.
Set in 1719, the preboot delves into the origin of the Predators presence on earth as one of their kind goes toe to toe with a young woman named Naru and her band of Comanche warriors.
Chock full of throwback oneliners and nods to earlier films, Prey breathes new life into one of the most iconic killer aliens of all time, and we can't wait to see what comes next.

Welcome to the inaugural round of Reboot Roulette!
We've spent the last 18 episodes picking apart Hollywood reboots‐‐praising their successes and shaming their failures.
We've forced ourselves to sit through flops, cash grabs, and more than a couple hits (looking at you Thumbtanic), and now it's time to put our educations to use and propose a few reboots of our own!
We've got a list of five fan-cast remakes ready for your approval, but only one will come out on top. Who's idea is going to get funding? Well...none of them, probably. But one of us will get the satisfaction of knowing their idea is better then the rest of the group, so that's something.
