Ep. 6: Just Say Yes

10/19/2023
With the departure of guitarist Greg Wood in late 2006, Punchline welcomed their talented hometown friend Jon Belan into the band, setting the stage for an era of change and artistic exploration. From the exciting tours that took them all the way to the UK to the unforgettable recording sessions of the Just Say Yes album, the band vividly relives these sometimes tumultuous but always creative times. This episode explores the band’s newfound confidence in self-releasing their music after being on a label for previous albums, which marked a defining crossroads in their journey into a DIY music landscape. While some members embraced this challenge, others gracefully stepped away. THIS is the story of Punchline from late 2006 until early 2009, also known as the Just Say Yes era. In early 2005, Punchline faced a career crossroads with the departure of guitarist and vocalist Paul Menotiades. What followed was a relentless international tour schedule and the recording and release of a landmark album. Ep. 4: Action

3/7/2023
In the summer of 2003, Punchline headed to Chicago to record their Fueled By Ramen debut full-length Action with up-and-coming producer Sean O’Keefe. These 12 heartfelt and energetic songs would expose the band to a bigger audience than ever before, both through rigorous touring and widespread distribution. While a growing fanbase and a huge hometown release show for the record brought a lot of momentum, the constant self-comparisons to successful peers added crazy amounts of pressure. Coupled with serious issues within the band, Punchline hit a breaking point in early 2005. For the first time ever, the people who lived the Action era talk openly and honestly about the peaks and valleys of this unforgettable time. By 2002, things had kicked into high gear for Punchline. They had decided to pursue music full-time, and relentless touring soon followed. Grassroots promotion and a DIY outlook had helped them gain a strong following, especially in their hometown of Pittsburgh, and a follow-up to 2001’s Major Motion Picture album was the next step. The 4 musically ambitious tracks on The Rewind EP would help propel Punchline to the next level, and they soon signed to a growing independent record label. The excitement and spirit of this era is captured by the band members and a variety of friends in this episode. With a growing fanbase and a mutually shared ambition, it was during this era that the band decided to pursue a music career full-time. By the summer of 2001, Punchline set out on their first full U.S. tour. The adventure had truly begun. In this episode, the members reflect back on this exciting and hilarious time.
