31. Quick n' Random- Start with Simple

3/26/2024
The mind likes to catastrophize, for whatever reason. This is unhelpful in most (modern day) cases. Most of the time, simple is the most rational approach. (Note: I recorded this on my phone in my car. I am not sure why this is relevant information, other than to help you understand why the recording sounds that way. I don’t want to wait until I have my fancy microphones or computer to record something. Using what I have when I have it is a much more realistic approach. There will always be more time for fancy recoding equipment.. now’s not that time!). - - - - Other places to connect with me: Email: cannondispatchpodcast@gmail.com Substack: https://cannondispatch.substack.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cannondispatch Spotify Apple Podcasts Get full access to The Cannon Dispatch at cannondispatch.substack.com/subscribe

30. Quick n' Random- Constraints as a Catalyst for Creative Ideas

27. Darius (Former US Navy FMF Corpsman, Veteran, Cloud Engineer)

11/14/2023
Head’s Up! Episode contains heavy language. This is a work/career/military episode. It's a good listen for veterans, those within a couple of years from finishing their time in the military, and those still active duty who are not sure what they want to do on the outside. I met Darius about six years ago while I was stationed in Spain. Darius was a US Navy Medical Corpsman for 10 years. During his time he deployed downrange with the Marines, and worked in clinics and hospitals in Europe and the US. This episode we talk mostly about his transition out of the military, from having no plan to landing a six-figure income as a full-time teleworking cloud engineer. We throw a lot of military acronyms out there, talk about military mindset in different environments, taking responsibility for your own career, the importance of networking, being your own advocate in work and life, and Cloud Tech Academy where he did his Salesforce training (links below). If you listen on Spotify or Apple, it really helps if you rate the episode and leave a comment. Appreciate it! 26. Podcast/ Life Update

11/9/2023
I’m back from a bit of a break. Talking points: * Brief talk about my transition and retirement from the Navy * Three areas I am focusing on : Physical/mental health, building a community, and spending time on a passion * Podcast plans (more music, drums, creativity-based episodes, occasionally sprinkling in other topics of interest) * Call to action: if anyone knows any veterans, or active duty military who need help during transition from active duty, send them my way **While Cannon Dispatch isn’t targeted specifically towards veterans, having recently left from Active Duty I know how difficult the transition can be. It’s important that people have someone to talk to about their careers and lives, what they want to do, and to knock around ideas for their aspirations and how to get there. And I believe it’s important they talk to someone who has experience in that event and who is not directly connected to anyone in their workplace or Chain of Command. If you or anyone you know, veteran, active duty or someone thinking about joining, who would benefit from a conversation about these things and more, reply to this post or contact me via one of the methods below. I would love to connect with you and help in any way I can. Thanks for listening, let’s do it again soon. -Tyler Where to connect with me: Email: cannondispatchpodcast@gmail.com Substack: https://cannondispatch.substack.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cannondispatch TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@cannon.dispatch Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@thecannondispatch Spotify Apple Podcasts - - - - The best way to support The Cannon Dispatch is to: * “Like” the posts. * Leave a comment (even if it’s “hi!”). * (Most importantly) share with someone who you think might like it. * Pay for a subscription here on Substack. 25. J (Ep. 3 of the J Series | Social Media and Its (Dis)Contents)

3/9/2023
*** This episode contains explicit language *** This is Episode 3 of the J. Series. We’re running right towards the topic of Social Media. This is an area of modern life that has greatly changed the trajectory of just about anything you can think of. Like most things, there is a light side and a dark side. How do you use it? Why do you use it? Why do you not use it? Does it make you happy? Does it anger you? Is it real life? What kind of value does it provide? These are sensible questions, and this is a conversation exploring those questions and more. And here’s a picture of J. while not on social media: - - - - If you liked the episode, these simple things help out BIG TIME: * Give a star rating on Spotify * Give a star rating AND comment on Apple Podcasts * Buy me a coffee * … Most of all, SHARE with someone you think would like it! 24. - J (Ep. 2 of the J Series | Music and Creativity)

3/2/2023
***Disclaimer: Podcast contains explicit language*** This is Episode 2 with J. J has many creative pursuits, but in my opinion Music is his favorite. He is a FANTASTIC guitarist. Proof of his talent: all of the “J Series” episodes feature music made by him and most of them were written and recorded right on the spot, no prior planning. He also recorded, mixed, and produced all of the J Series Cannon Dispatch podcast episodes. His musical genre interests range from metalcore to RnB, death metal, hardcore, anything melodic, alternative, and beyond. This episode we talk about his journey into music, influences, writing, creativity, imposter syndrome, and more. Here’s my favorite original composition from him called “Isolated”. It slams. Here’s his Youtube Channel. And here’s his dog who was a guest producer of this episode: - - - - If you liked the episode, these simple things help out BIG TIME: * Give a star rating on Spotify * Give a star rating AND comment on Apple Podcasts * Buy me a coffee * … Most of all, SHARE with someone you think would like it! 23. - Brain and the Appalachian Trail: Part II

2/13/2023
Spoiler alert: Brian finished the Appalachian Trail. We talk about his experience on the trail, friends, “trail magic”, paradigm shifts in thinking and being, the body healing itself, injuries, and how constant comfort is slowly killing us. He also goes into what has changed for him in his life since embarking on the hike. You can listen to Part I (Spotify, Apple) recorded forever ago in March. It’s interesting to notice the differences vs. the similarities in his thinking, what he was right about, and where he had no idea what to expect. Talking with Brian is always a good time. You can find him on Instagram here. - - - - If you liked the episode, these simple things help out BIG TIME: * Give a star rating on Spotify * Give a star rating AND comment on Apple Podcasts * Like the post and write a comment on Substack * Buy me a coffee As always, thanks for listening! 21. - Casey C. (Friend, Guitarist)

12/29/2022
You can listen on here on Substack, or on Spotify or Apple Podcasts, or wherever else you may listen. If you do use either of these, give it a star rating so more people can see it! The guitar intro to this episode is an original piece performed by Casey. Casey is a friend and guitar player I met a few months back. I thought this conversation was going to be about music. It’s not. That’s the thing about having these conversations with interesting people, you never know where it’s going to go. The topics are listed in the subject line above. I don’t normally like to discuss politics, especially on my podcast. What we talk about here is sort of meta-politics, not choosing sides, but commentary on the game as we see it. From there we go in to all sorts of things. When it comes to politics, I’ve always tried to censor myself because I didn’t want to risk offending anyone. But the reality is that most people don’t fit into neat little boxes. So my censorship is not helping anyone, most importantly me. In my experience, most people have nuanced opinion, and most people are pretty reasonable. When you censor yourself you deny yourself and others the opportunity to listen and grow. You stifle your own maturity. There’s plenty of other forces out there that are going to try to do that, so you need not do it to yourself. In the end, censoring ourselves doesn’t do anybody any good. There is a difference between censoring yourself because you are going to say something rude and nasty (most rude and nasty people don’t have that kind of self-awareness) and censoring yourself because you aren’t sure if people are going to agree with you, or you’re judging yourself to harsh, or whatever reason. What I m trying to say is, if you want to say something, then say it. If you want to text, then text it. Be honest, don’t pull the rug out from under yourself becuase you even get started. Hope you enjoy this conversation. Rock and Roll, Tyler Get full access to The Cannon Dispatch at cannondispatch.substack.com/subscribe

19. - Ephraim Wertz (Friend, Singer/ Songwriter)

8/22/2022
Ephraim is a singer/ songwriter who currently lives in the US. We became friends when we both lived in Spain some years back. It was one of those friendships that was natural. Kindred spirits. Our families went on vacations together, spent many long nights playing cards and drinking Spanish beer, deep conversations that would last long into the night, travelled to Belgium to see Queens of the Stone Age, and so much more. I was in a cover band while living there (Mama Zulu!) and he let us use his garage for a practice space. He’s the kind of friend who you would call up when some crazy shit went down and you needed some SpecOps-level help. I feel like we’ve already lived multiple lifetimes in the duration of our friendship. Life has changed a lot since those days, but we’ve done well to keep an important and lasting friendship. This past month he released a four-song EP called “It Will Be Ok”, produced by Urban Bros Records in Rota, Spain. These songs are a product of a particularly heavy period in his life and he used music as the energy to produce art. This conversation is about music, creativity, friendship, and life. Song in between the intro/ conversation is an excerpt of the title track called “It Will Be Ok”. We recorded this conversation on Palafox Street in Pensacola, FL on St. Patty’s Day weekend, 2022. You can find his music on Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube. His website is ephraimwertz.com. He is also on Instagram @ephraimwertz. 17. - Tim Kinsella (Retired US Navy Commanding Officer, Director of Center of Leadership at the College of Business at the University of West Florida)

4/18/2022
Tim Kinsella has an Irish accent, which is unique for someone who spent three decades in the US Navy. Tim is an interesting dude because he is not your atypical Joe-Navy type of person. Not the caricature you see on an old John Wayne movie or a more modern Jerry Bruckheimer action film. He's got depth and breadth, appreciates the arts, and has a knack for tongue-in-cheek humor. We talk about all kinds of stuff: mindset, the importance of hobbies, being careful on what we let define us as people, his Irish heritage, self-education, humor, mental health, and leadership. He was in command when the tragic shooting happened onboard Naval Air Station Pensacola in December 2019, and he shares personal insight in this interview that he has never shared elsewhere. He is now the Director of the Center for Leadership at the University of West Florida College of Business in Pensacola, Florida. We recorded this in a golf course lobby over a couple of pints of Guinness. (P.S. Here’s the poem he recited in the intro) Get full access to The Cannon Dispatch at cannondispatch.substack.com/subscribe

Neta is a dear friend of mine. We met a year ago at work and since then we've had hours of conversation about so many different topics. I asked if I could interview her about entrepreneurship, where ideas for starting different businesses come from, and more. She offers clean insight on many different areas such as how and when to start a business (answer: right now), acting on ideas, imposter syndrome, and more. 14. - Brian & The Appalachian Trail: Part I

3/22/2022
Brian is prepping to hike the entire Appalachian Trail (more than 2,000 miles from North Georgia to Maine). In two days he will begin his journey. Brian is a super chill and kind guy, full of insight and wisdom. A retired US Navy veteran, we talk about prepping physically, mentally, and materially. There was so much I didn't know about an undertaking such as this and it was incredibly insightful. And as always, we talk about more than the trail. Often these journeys are a metaphor for life, how having a plan is important but ultimately you have to be prepared for anything. We recorded this episode remotely. He was in a hotel in North Georgia. 13. - Jacob (Veteran US Navy Fighter Pilot, Airline Pilot, My Bro-In-Law)

3/15/2022
Episode 13! Not 12! Jacob spent 10 years in the Navy, with most of his flying with the F/A-18. He did a handful of combat deployments on carrier strike groups and a few tours instructing new Naval Aviators. He talks about what the day-to-day combat deployment mission looks like from the perspective of a fighter pilot, the underwhelming feeling of breaking the speed of sound, and transitioning to an airline pilot. He also gives advice to those thinking about becoming a pilot some advice on how to do that. And as always we talk about mindset, relationships with ourself and others, and more. Growing up I was the middle child between two sisters. But since meeting him I've had a brother too. Since marrying my sister yeeears ago, we've spent a lot of time together doing all kinds of stuff. Four wheeling in the mountains of Tennessee, going on family trips to Spain and Portugal, flying with him in a small Cessna (it didn't last long, I almost lost my lunch and wanted to go back on Earth). He's a great human. We recorded this episode in his garage, which for now he has converted into a workshop for building a kit plane. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/cannondispatch/support Get full access to The Cannon Dispatch at cannondispatch.substack.com/subscribe
