Though Jane is sick, as she is not too sick, Mrs Bennet is not fussed about her getting well soon; the longer she stays at Netherfield, the more closely she and Mr Bingley will become. Mrs Bennet appologises to Bingley for her daughters imposing on him, but he says it is nothing. She then asks if he is planning on leaving the house any time soon. Bingley replies that he does not know, that he is very “in the moment” and that he lets his feelings guide him. Mrs Bennet then talks to him about the country and asks him if he prefers it to the city. Again, he does not know; he prefers where he is at a specific time. Darcy slights the country, saying that there are a limited number of interesting people. Mrs Better argues with him about this, and though Elizabeth tries to save him from her mother, she still talks ill of Darcy’s beliefs. Eventually, the Bennet women leave, but not without the youngest daughters asking Mr Bingley if he will keep his promise to hold a ball at Netherfield. He will. Support the Show. At dinner, the Ladies say that they are very sorry that Jane is ill, but Lizzy can tell that they don’t really care. After supper, Elizabeth goes back to check on Jane, and the Bingley sisters start trash talking Elizabeth. They say that she has bad manners, bad conversation skills, and no taste. The only thing recommending her is that she is a good walker. They then discuss her idiotic idea to walk all of the way to the house to see her sister, and how awful it was that she was covered in mud and dirt. Mr Bingley defends her, saying that he didn’t notice her dress at all, and thought it very good of her to have come. The girls then ask Darcy if he noticed, and if it lowered his esteem of her and they are a bit shocked when he retorts that it in fact lifted it. The girls then head up to pretend to be kind to Jane again and leave when coffee is called for. After Elizabeth believes Jane to be asleep, she heads down to find the group playing cards, but refuses to join in as she believes them to be betting with a lot of money. She goes to read a book instead, and Mr Bingley offers to give her his library if she would like. This leads to a conversation about Mr Darcy’s extensive library at his home in Derbyshire, and homes in general. Elizabeth soon finds that she is not reading at all and is listening to their conversation, and she goes to join in. The topic then changes to ideal people, and Darcy explains exactly what it is that he looks for in a woman… Support the Show. Every day the girls get news of the men’s names and whereabouts, and they can talk only of these men at suppertime. Mr Bennet can barely take it. During one of these talks, the family is interrupted by a footman who has brought an invitation for luncheon to Jane from the Bingley women. Jane readily accepts and asks if she can take the carriage. Her mother and father say no, and Mrs Bennet adds that she will go on horseback as it is going to rain, and this will force the women to invite her to stay. Jane is a bit put off by this, but she goes and not long after, the rain begins. The following day, word is sent to the Bennet’s that Jane has gotten a nasty cold and is bedridden. Elizabeth knows that she is going to be fine but insists nonetheless on going to see her sister. Elizabeth walks the whole 3 miles to Netherfield House and though covered in mud, is welcomed into the house to see her sister. Elizabeth’s state impresses Darcy. Jane has become more ill since the writing of her letter, and insists that Jane be allowed to stay with her until she gets better. Support the Show. Jane is very receptive to the ladies, and likes them very much, Elizabeth however is wary of their kindness. Charlotte and Elizabeth discuss Jane and Mr Bingley. Charlotte believes that Jane should just marry Mr Bingley now and get to know him later. Elizabeth isn’t too sure of this though, saying that the two of them don’t know each other well enough. Elizabeth is too caught up in her talking about Jane, that she failed to realise that Mr Darcy like her very much. It seems that even though he can point out several “flaws” in Lizzy, he has become determined to get to know her better and tries to listen to several conversations she has at the next ball. At the ball, Elizabeth finds it odd that this rude man is trying to join in with her. After a brief engagement with Darcy, Charlotte decides to put Elizabeth in the spotlight, and gets her to play the piano and sing for the audience. As the night goes on, several of the Bennet girls, and some of the officers go off to dance. Sir Lucas, sitting next to Darcy starts a conversation about dancing. Eventually Elizabeth comes over, and despite Sir Lucas’ attempts, and Darcy’s wanting of it, Elizabeth refuses to dance. Support the Show. After leading him inside his cabin, Prendick collapses in exhaustion. When he wakes, he presses Montgomery to tell him what it was that chased him through the forest, but Montgomery holds fast and says that he shall not say anything until the following day. Montgomery thus goes to get a sleeping draught and helps Prendick into his hammock. When he awakes the next day, he hears a different type of cry coming from the enclosure. A cry he knows... the cry of a man. He goes to the door and rips it open, and sees splatters of blood, and a creature bound to a board of wood before Dr Moreau shoves him back into his cabin, furious at Montgomery for not locking the door, and leaving Prendick in a state of Panic. Sir Lucas was the former mayor of the area, and for his work he was granted the rank of knighthood. The eldest of their daughters is Elizabeth’s best friend. Mrs Lucas pardons Darcy’s behaviour, claiming that he has a right to be proud. Elizabeth approves of Jane’s fancying of Bingley, saying that she has never before liked anyone that wasn’t a bad choice for her. They then discuss the sisters of Mr Bingley, and though she is uncertain of their characters, Jane seems very fond of them. It is assumed that Bingley will eventually move full time to the area, and sooner rather than later as he took Netherfield house after seeing it for little more than 30 minutes. More is discussed of Darcy and Bingley’s relationship. Darcy is clearly the superior of the two, not only in rank, but in intellect. Bingley is, however, far more likable. Support the Show. Tom is taken inside, and Huck goes to see that Jim is okay. The farmers want to hang Jim, but as he doesn’t belong to them, he can’t be. They however do tie him up even harder and say that his rations are to be reduced to only bread and water. The doctor comes in and changes their minds about torturing Jim. He says that Jim was the best nurse that he could have asked for while taking care of Jim. This gets the men to leave Jim alone, but they aren’t too happy about having a runaway slave in their midst. Huck then goes inside to see Aunt Sally and Tom. He is sleeping, but Aunt Sally dotes on him like never before. After a while, Tom finally wakes up, and before Huck can tell him that everything went wrong, he starts asking if Jim got away safe, and starts telling Aunt Sally about how he and Huck helped him escape. Aunt Sally interjects though and tells Tom that Jim didn’t get free, and that he is back in chains. Tom leaps up and yells that Jim has in fact been free for 2 months, he was freed in the will of Mrs Watson. The boys are sent straight to bed, and at 11 they start their plan. Huck however forgot the butter and Tom send him down to the cellar to grab it while he heads off to see Jim. Huck heads downstairs and when he comes up to the landing, he comes across aunt Sally who demands what he has been doing. She is in such a panic that she believes his lies for the moment, and send him into the sitting room where he finds around 20 farmers with guns and all sorts waiting to take action against the people trying to steal Jim. Huck starts to feel sick. The farmers are talking about their plan of action but Huck can tell that they are nervous. As Huck’s tension rises, the butter that he has hidden under his hat starts to melt. This causes Aunt Sally to rip his hat off where she finds the butter and cornbread. She forgives him for stealing food and send him back to bed. Huck flies upstairs and down the lightening rod and runs over to the cabin to get Jim. As he arrives he starts to hear then men coming. In just the lick of time, Jim, Huck, and Tom fly for the canoe. As they jump the fence, Tom’s trousers catch on a nail and the sound causes the farmers to fire in their direction. It seems that everyone got away unscathed, and they make their way to the island where Jim is finally declared free. Support the Show.
