Being a badass is about owning your shit. It’s about honest self-reflection, looking your fear in the face, and saying, “Hey, you classy bitch. I see you. I get it. But I won’t let you hold me back.” Being a badass is about finding and using your most authentic voice, even when your opinion isn’t popular. (But we badasses are respectful. Speaking our truth without being an asshole in the process. Just sayin’.) Reconnecting with your inner badass is a journey. It takes daily effort and intention, a great deal of reflection, courage, and normalizing the “abnormal.” Badass Is the New Skinny is where we’ll have conversations about the thoughts, feelings, and actions that contribute to your inner badassery. You’ll hear more about how I navigate the shit show of being a type-A, neurotic, people-pleaser who cares way too much what other people think, and what I’ve learned along the way. You’ll get all the tips, tricks, self-care, self-grace, habits, behaviors, questions, and more that helped me take on my fears and figure out my shit. So join me for new episodes every Thursday, and let’s celebrate the struggle, the wins, the lessons, and all that good stuff on this journey to feel like our best and most empowered badass.

057 | Food and Nutrition Propaganda - Who Can You Trust?

3/21/2024
My friends, in this episode, we're talking about food and nutrition propaganda and asking ourselves the question: who can you trust? When you think about how nutrition information is shared, you have to consider the source, and then... you have to question the source. It's a lot of responsibility on you, I know. In today's chat, I share a high-level history of food and nutrition recommendations from the good ol' USDA - the United States Department of Agriculture. The intention with this conversation is to shed some light on where recommendations come from and remind you to be curious and skeptical. It's also to say that general guidelines are just that - they're general. That means your needs and what's right for you might look different, and that's OK. Thanks for joining me for this adventure! 056 | The Profitable Business of Keeping People Unwell

3/7/2024
Have you ever stopped to think about how much profit there is in keeping people unwell? In my day job, there are a ton of conversations about community health and how, collectively, sickness costs people more and it’s in our communities’ best interests to have a healthier community. Caring for people who are sick is expensive—it’s expensive for health insurers, it’s expensive for companies offering health plans, it’s expensive for government programs, and it’s especially expensive for individuals and families. So why then are we struggling so much as a nation to finally get well? Because being unwell is very, very profitable for select industries. When you inject pharmaceutical companies, lobbyists, power-hungry government officials, and corporate greed, it becomes a very different conversation. In this episode, I dive into more about what I've learned about the industries that are profiting from keeping you and our society unwell. My goal is to shine some light on some factors at play that could be making it harder for you to achieve your health and wellness goals, and give you some things to consider so that you can be a savvy consumer and self-advocate. 055 | Why People Overeat

2/22/2024
The question around why people overeat (or, more specifically, why I overeat) is one that plagues a lot of us. Why do we eat to the point of discomfort? Why do we eat when we're not hungry? Why can't we stop eating once we've started? These are all great questions, and there's no simple answer. Like most things, the answers to these questions will vary wildly depending on each individual person, their history, circumstances, genes, lifestyles, and so much more. But in the meantime, it's at least worth talking about why people overeat. My goal for you in this episode is to shed some light on things that could be happening in your life, giving you a starting point to explore with curiosity and find solutions to help you overcome overeating, if that's a relevant goal for you. 054 | Back On the Wagon

2/8/2024
In this episode, I dig into a comment that a coworker made a "get back on the wagon" comment that I hadn't thought about before. Quite frankly, I needed some time and space to process it, and thus, you get a new Badass Is the New Skinny episode! It was a comment that both bothered me and got me thinking. It bothered me because I don't like the idea of people going around feeling like there's always going to be a "wagon that they need to get back on." It's now how I imagine living my most badass life, that's for sure. So in this episode, I lean a little heavy on the rollercoaster analogy and the difference between the rollercoaster that life is and the rollercoasters that we create for ourselves, which is basically getting on and off the wagon. Same idea, different analogy. Join the Conversation! I'd love to hear your thoughts on this topic. 053 | Overcoming Indifference

12/14/2023
Overcoming indifference when you've been managing your life in crisis mode can be tough. After all, it's hard to worry about whether or not you drank eight cups of water today if you're battling an illness, managing a move, planning a wedding, caring for a dying parent, or trying not to lose your shit at work. In this episode, I talk about how to break through the indifference when you're ready to move past crisis mode and get back on track to make progress toward your goals. I haven't been shy about the fact that my life has been a little bit of a dumpster fire the past few months, or, you know, the last year. But I'm ready to be done being indifferent and start making some changes to get myself closer to reaching my goals. While I don't talk about goal-setting in this episode, I do talk about the steps to help you move past your indifference and get back into healthier habits. Because at the end of the day, most health goals can be established with consistent, healthy habits. Join the Conversation! I know it's been a while, but the thing is... my mom died. And I've been going through a lot. I talk a lot on this podcast about how to continue to take care of yourself and develop healthy habits and routines in the face of big life changes. Well. Here's a very real example for you. After a fun and refreshing summer vacation, Badass is back! In this episode, I fill you in on what I've been up to and what the current vision is for Badass Is the New Skinny going forward. Will it probably change as I find my footing again? Almost definitely. Long story, short: I grew a life over the summer and my priorities are on maintaining my joy. That means that Badass Is the New Skinny will still be around, I'll still be moving forward with some coaching products and plans, and... it's going to be on a much slower timeline because I'm not going to wrap my life around my side hustle. I'm keeping the podcast and my business plans light, fun, easy, breezy. Check out this episode and let's reconnect! 049 | Set Yourself Up for Success

5/25/2023
In this episode, I talk about seven basic things to master to set yourself up for success when it comes to your health and wellness. We spend so much time worrying about all the little tricks and nuances to living a healthy life that sometimes we just overcomplicate it. Here, I'll talk about the most basic things you need, without overcomplicating it. The first four things are the ones that I highly recommend you prioritize first: The next three things are also high in priority, but if you're feeling a little overwhelmed, these can take back-burner priority (for a little while, at least): Check out the episode to learn more about these things and why they deserve to be your basic priorities. 048 | Wrapping Up the Be Badass Challenge

5/18/2023
In this conversation about wrapping up the Be Badass challenge, I go into more detail about my experience with it as both a participant and a challenge host. I talk about what worked, what didn't, and lessons learned. One of the big things that became really clear with this challenge is that a lot of the lack of engagement landed squarely on my shoulders because - I'm finally admitting - I'm just not really a social media person. Not in a way that is necessary to be successful with a digitally-based business and offering. The second half of this conversation was focused on where Badass Is the New Skinny and my business as a whole is going to go from here. So be sure to check that out to hear about what the future has in store for this podcast. I've included all of the links for the Be Badass challenge below so that if you didn't go through it in real time but you're interested in checking them out, those are there for you, along with the habit tracker I created to accompany the challenge. 047 | Be Badass: Addressing Exercise Bullshit

5/11/2023
In this last episode of the Be Badass challenge, I'm addressing exercise bullshit you may have heard on social media, from coaches or trainers, or from your friends, family, or neighbor down the street. I tackle ten common exercise beliefs and misconceptions and break it down so that you know what's what and can navigate what movement can and should look like in your life so that it's most relevant to you. A few quick examples of the things I cover include: Enjoy a little extra 'tude in this one, as some of these things really hit a nerve. At the end of the day, the goal for movement and exercise is to be physically active in a way that serves your mental and physical health, and there's really no need to overcomplicate it. Move your body in a way that you enjoy and that you can keep doing in the long-term. Next week, I'll do a quick recap of the challenge and give you a heads up on what to expect on the podcast before Badass Is the New Skinny takes a summer break. Stay tuned! 045 | Be Badass: The Problem with 1,200 Calorie Diets

4/27/2023
It's finally time to talk about the problem with 1,200 calorie diets. This diet is super simple: Don't eat more than 1,200 calories a day. And this is one of those examples where simple is not always best. I do try to encourage my listeners to keep their health and wellness habits simple. The problem here is that 1,200 calorie-a-day diets are essentially starvation diets and should only be done if advised by your doctor and under the care of a medical team. In this episode, I dive more into the 1,200 calorie a diet, sharing more information about where it originated and what it looks like today. Believe it or not, this diet - which is more than 100 years old at this point - is still commonplace in today's society. Frankly, that's a disgusting concept. And it's just as fucked up now as it was back in the day. I also go a step further in this conversation to talk about other diet traps that are saturating the health and wellness world, so that you know what to keep an eye out for. By the end of the episode, you'll have all the information you need to build on your sleep habit and stress habit by adding a healthy eating habit. This episode kicks of phase 3 of 4 as I shift the focus to nutrition. In this episode, I again break down the steps for how to choose and implement a healthy habit, with a focus on nutrition. I then give 15 healthy eating habit ideas to help you brainstorm the right habit for you to focus on to help you achieve your goals. 043 | Be Badass: Establishing Boundaries for Stress Management

4/13/2023
When we thinking about dealing with stress in our lives, sometimes the best place to start is by establishing boundaries for stress management, meaning we find ways to protect ourselves from potential stressors. This week's podcast episode is week four of the Be Badass challenge, and I'm continuing the conversation around stress management and mental health as we all continue to practice the sleep and stress management habits we've put in place so far. The conversation around boundaries is much larger than this episode alone, but in this episode, I'm sharing with you six categories of boundaries you can consider and provide some examples within each to help you think about what these categories and boundaries might look like for you in your life. Categories of Boundaries If establishing boundaries is part of your overall stress management and mental health mission, I recommend implementing one new boundary at a time so that you can get a better sense of if and how well it works for you. This is also the most sustainable approach. One thing to keep in mind is that not all boundaries are habits, but some habits could be based in boundaries. Generally speaking, this distinction doesn't matter much. But if you are looking to implement some boundaries for the Be Badass challenge and they aren't necessarily habits, that's totally fine. Practicing habits is important, but if your version of establishing boundaries is something you do once and it's just in place--like turning off alerts--go for it! Again, the main idea with this challenge is to help you think critically about your habits and lifestyle so that you can make sustainable changes to help you feel like your best and most badass self. 042 | Be Badass: Habits for Stress Management and Mental Health

4/6/2023
This week, the Be Badass with Me mini challenge continues with the addition of healthy habits for stress management and mental health. In this episode, I'll give a quick update on how my sleep habit is going, go over the steps for choosing and implementing a meaningful habit, share 15 stress management and mental health habit ideas (plus a bonus one!), and wrap up with the stress management habit that I'll be adding to my Be Badass practice. The structure of this challenge is to compound habits for long-term practice to help you feel like your best and most badass self. That means that we'll be continuing with the sleep habit and adding the stress management habit. We'll practice these habits for the next couple weeks, and then we'll add another one. If at any point you feel like you need more time to practice your habit before adding another one, that's totally fine! Add new habits at your own pace. (Though, I do recommend giving yourself at least two weeks to practice a habit before adding another one!) 041 | Be Badass with Me: Five Reasons to Prioritize Sleep

3/30/2023
Why prioritize sleep? Because sleep impacts pretty much every part of your life, health, and well-being. Last week, I walked you through how to choose and implement a healthy sleep habit as part of the Be Badass with Me mini challenge. This is an 8-week challenge that dedicates two weeks to four wellness pillars: sleep, stress management and mental health, nutrition, and movement. In this week's episode, I give you five reasons you should prioritize sleep to encourage you to take steps to stop feeling like shit and start feeling like a badass, instead. As part of this challenge, I also give you my update on how things are going with me and my sleep habit practice. Because challenges like this work better and we stay more motivated with social support. I also want us to be able to learn from each other as we go along. 040 | Be Badass with Me: Healthy Sleep Habits

3/23/2023
Like many others, I do better sticking to my goals when I have some accountability. To help with that, I'm running the Be Badass with Me mini challenge so that, together, we can implement sustainable, healthy habits to help us feel like out best, most badass selves. Over the next 8 or so weeks, we'll develop health habits for sleep, stress management/mental health, nutrition, and movement. This podcast episode kicks off the challenge with a focus on healthy sleep habits and how to implement them. The best part? This isn't some generic challenge where I ask you to do what I do. Instead, I walk you through how to find the best habit for you based on what helps you feel like your own version of a badass. 15 Healthy Sleep Habits How to Choose and Implement the Habit As I walk you through the steps, I share the habit I'm going to practice over the coming weeks. Life has been extra tough lately. My life has been one crisis after another. I am working really hard to take good care of myself and practice healthy habits while my world is on fire. I realized this is a great opportunity for me to take you along with me as I implement habits to help me feel my best during these tough times. And thus, I bring you the "Be Badass with Me" informal mini-challenge. I hope you'll accept the challenge and join me on this journey.
