Mentorship Means Giving Time, Access, Instruction and Opportunity

11/28/2023
Modeling, Instruction, Time, Access, Opportunity Biblical Basis: • 2Ti 2:1 • Jesus mentored the Twelve—“his own who were in the world” (John 13:1)—to know him (and, through him, to know the Father) and to re-present God's love in the world.• Jethro to Moses, Moses to Joshua, Eli to Samuel, Elijah to Elisha, Mordecai to Esther, Jesus to His disciples, Barnabas to Paul, Paul to Timothy and John Mark, and Timothy Awareness of what you are mentoring: • What are you projecting? Character traits, hard work, seriousness, love and care, integrity, faithfulness, fruit of the Spirit. • 2Ti 3:10 Time, official and unofficial: • Luk 5:27 After these things He went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, "Follow Me." 28 So he left all, rose up, and followed Him. Find or create opportunities to practice teaching • Rom 12:6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; 7 or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching; 8 he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness. • 2Ti 1:6 Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. Be honest and always be positive but honest Pro 15:23 A man has joy by the answer of his mouth, And a word spoken in due season, how good it is! Pro 25:11 A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold In settings of silver. 12 Like an earring of gold and an ornament of fine gold Is a wise rebuker to an obedient ear. Pro 27:5 Open rebuke is better Than love carefully concealed. Pro 27:6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend, But the kisses of an enemy are deceitful. Eph 4:25 Therefore, putting away lying, "LET EACH ONE OF YOU SPEAK TRUTH WITH HIS NEIGHBOR," for we are members of one another. Eph 4:29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. Modeling, Instruction, Time, Access, Opportunity As Senior Pastor since 1997 Rod Carver graduated from CCU in Biblical Studies with a focus on leadership. Since then he has completed a ThD and pursues opportunities to keep learning and teaching. He has a passion to mentor and encourage younger pastors and missionaries. He is a regular contributor to various websites and is currently working on a book on marriage counseling. Blessed to be called to Corpus Christi Texas, Pastor Rod works with other pastors in the area to affect political and societal change through the proclamation of the Word of God. How to Improve as a Preacher Over Time (with Brandon Hilgemaan)

11/21/2023
Brandon Hilgemaan has learned the power of slow, steady incremental growth as a preacher through intentionally highlighting areas for improvement. Through self assessment (and some feedback from his wife) he has removed some bad habits and added some healthy practices in his personal study and public proclamation of God's Word. He has found that pastors make the mistake of trying to get better in every area of their preaching all at once. But trying to fix everything barely fixes anything. Brandon Hilgemann is a pastor in Tempe, Arizona, and the founder of ProPreacher.com, a popular online resource dedicated to helping pastors preach better. He has served in ministry for over 15 years in churches of all sizes around the country. Brandon is the author of Preaching Nuts & Bolts, and Preach and Deliver. He is also a graduate of Phoenix Seminary and Grand Canyon University. He and his wife have been married for over 17 years and have two kids and a dog. Connect with Brandon! Let Every Heart Prepare Him Room - Rebroadcast

11/14/2023
The Christmas season is upon us! This is a unique time in the calendar year when nominal Christians and occasional visitors will come to your church to sing songs and listen to a sermon. How can we leverage this opportunity for the gospel? How can a preacher, who has perhaps preached dozens of Christmas messages over the years, keep it “fresh” now? Eight former guests of the podcast were asked exactly that question and have submitted their answers. Our hope is that as you listen to these different perspectives and ideas that it will stir your heart with fresh enthusiasm this upcoming December! How to Train Lay Preachers in Your Congregation with Duncan Blackwell

11/7/2023
In this conversation Mike speaks with Duncan Blackwell about fountain pens and the role of the church in raising up Bible teachers at a local level, rather than exclusively depending on parachurch organizations or seminaries. “And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,” (Ephesians 4:11–12, ESV) Duncan Blackwell is the Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church, Elk City, Oklahoma. He has served in this role since June 2022, having previously served as a Senior Pastor and Associate Pastor in two prior churches. He and his wife Julie have four sons, ages 6, 5, 3, and 2 months old. On any given day the Blackwells can be found homeschooling, playing t-ball, hunting, or reading the Chronicles of Narnia. Duncan is passionate about leading God’s people to fulfill the Great Commission, through biblical exposition. Coaching, Critiquing and Calling with David Ireland

10/31/2023
For the 300th episode of the show, we are joined by a special guest, Dr David Ireland. In this important conversation he speaks with Mike about the importance of preachers having a clear argument in their message and a persuasiveness in their presentation. He speaks about his preparation process which involves reading himself full, thinking himself clear and praying himself hot. There is also two stories that he shares about prophetic dreams and visions that have both called him into ministry and have given him insight into a need for his own personal growth. Dr. David Ireland is founder and lead pastor of Christ Church, a thriving 10,000-member multiracial, multisite worship community in northern New Jersey. He and his wife, Marlinda, have been married since 1984 and have two adult daughters and a son-in-law. Dr. Ireland grew up in Queens, New York and invited Jesus Christ to become the Lord of his life during college. At that time he was an engineering student. Dr. Ireland earned an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from Fairleigh Dickinson University and a master’s degree in civil engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology. Shortly after he began working in consulting engineering, he answered God’s call to plant a new church. In 1986, with only six other adults, the Irelands founded what is now known as Christ Church. Early in the life of the church, Dr. Ireland sensed God’s heart deeply leading him to become intentional about ensuring that the church would reflect the multiracial mix of society. Dr. Ireland poignantly remembers the moment he tearfully embraced the church’s God-given mission to unite people to God and people to people. “I was on a routine errand for my then-pregnant wife in a local supermarket when suddenly I became mesmerized by the melting pot of races gathered in the store,” Dr. Ireland says. “At that precise moment I heard the Holy Spirit speak this question to my heart, ’David, why can’t it be like this in My house?’ I knew right then and there that God wanted me to grow and lead a multiracial, multiethnic congregation.” While leading Christ Church, Dr. Ireland has also authored over 20 books including What Color is Your God?, Secrets of a Satisfying Life, One in Christ, The Skin You Live In, and The Kneeling Warrior: Winning Your Battles Through Prayer and has earned a master’s degree in theology from Alliance Theological Seminary and an earned doctorate degree in organizational leadership from Regent University. He completed his post-doctoral education at the University of Pennsylvania, and holds a postgraduate degree in social innovation from the University of Cambridge in England. Dr. Ireland formerly served as an adjunct professor at Drew University focusing on training doctoral students in the area of leadership and church growth. Former diversity consultant to the National Basketball Association, Dr. Ireland has led chapel services for the New York Giants, New York Jets, and at the U.S. Pentagon. Ireland has appeared on numerous television shows including The Dr. Phil Show, The CBS Evening News, and The 700 Club. Through his community development corporation, he offers a youth leadership institute, as well as a statewide abstinence-based program in partnership with New Jersey schools. The Reverend Ireland is an appointed member of the Governor’s Advisory Commission on Faith-Based Initiatives and serves on the boards of Nyack College and Alliance Theological Seminary. Preaching that is Prayerful and Priestly - John Koessler

10/17/2023
John Koessler is a self proclaimed "amateur" when it comes to praying, and in this honest and insightful conversation with Mike he speaks about the difference between human and divine conversation, and how it informs his preaching, which he defines as a conversation that he has with people, based on a previous conversation that he had with God. He contrasts prophetic preaching, which can come off as preaching "against" the people, and priestly preaching, which is preaching "for" or "with" the people. "Preaching is the communicating of divine truth through human personality." -Phillips Brooks Dr John Koessler is an award-winning author and retired faculty emeritus of pastoral studies of Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois. He writes monthly columns for Today in the Word and Mature Living Magazine. John is the author of When God is Silent (Lexham), Dangerous Virtues (Moody), Practicing the Present (Moody), The Radical Pursuit of Rest (InterVarsity), The Surprising Grace of Disappointment (Moody), Folly, Grace & Power: The Mysterious Act of Preaching (Zondervan), A Stranger in the House of God (Zondervan) and served as general editor of The Moody Handbook of Preaching (Moody). Precision in the Pulpit: A Labor of Love with Paul Mowery

9/26/2023
Paul Mowery's early years of Christian ministry were plagued by toxicity and leadership dysfunction, and so he has put deliberate work into creating ecosystems of accountability, spiritual health and plural leadership. He talks with Mike about some of the weaknesses that are inherent with the so-called "Moses Model" of pastoral leadership, as well as the importance of precision in sermon delivery. It is always worth putting work into finding a clearer and shorter way to express something! “If we say too much in a single sermon, we may give a field of wheat instead of a loaf of bread.” - Charles Spurgeon." FAQ with Nick Cady + Mike Neglia

9/19/2023
Nick and Mike spend time answering some questions that have come our way about preaching while in pain (both physical and emotional), some objections about Christ centered preaching (isn't this just shoehorning Jesus into passages that He isn't actually referenced in?) some of the practicalities about women teaching the Bible in complementarian churches, addressing controversial topics (and sinful practices) from the pulpit while remaining gracious in tone and avoiding "Christianese" in preaching so that we are intelligible to visitors. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. Preaching The Efficacious Word Of God with Jeremy Kimble

9/12/2023
Efficacious means the "ability to produce the intended result". When used to describe the Word of God it means that when God speaks it has transformative power, and it results in the transformation of the believer, both from death to life and in progressing in holiness. Dr Jeremy Kimble believes in the efficacy of the Scriptures and has written a helpful book that both explains and argues for the efficacy of God's Word, and then gives VERY practical applications to the life of the Christian, the counsellor, the parent, the leader and the preacher. In this conversation, Jeremy speaks about an arresting sermon that he heard as a young man, and the transformative impact it had on him, and then goes on to answer questions about the necessity of preaching, the MIM and the MIT of sermon preparation and delivery and plenty of on-the-ground practical advice and encouragement. "The amazing thing is that everyone who reads the Bible has the same joyful thing to say about it. In every land, in every language, it is the same tale: where that Book is read, not with the eyes only, but with the mind and heart, the life is changed. Sorrowful people are comforted, sinful people are transformed, peoples who were in the dark walk in the light. The Bible holds its greatest meaning and richness when interpreted through the lens of Jesus-shaped goggles, revealing its Main Character and guiding us towards explicitly Christian sermons. It is through this transformative perspective that the profound wisdom of the scriptures emerges, showcasing how each passage, story, and verse converges to illuminate the life, teachings, and grace of Jesus. Nick Cady and Mike Neglia joined forces to lead an enlightening workshop the picturesque setting of Boise Idaho. Their mission was to equip attendees with the tools to deliver Gospel-centered sermons that resonated with the essence of the gospel from any part of the Bible. Throughout the event, participants immersed themselves in a captivating atmosphere of learning, exploration, and revelation. With eloquence and expertise, the speakers showcased the power of preaching with authenticity, relevancy, and heartfelt conviction. Participants were encouraged to connect biblical truths with the real-life experiences and struggles of their audience, bridging the gap between the ancient texts and contemporary challenges. Scripture Memorization and Spiritual Formation with Kieran Lenahan

7/25/2023
Kieran Lenahan believes that so much of who we become is influenced by what we allow our minds to dwell on. He has prioritised scripture memorization as a spiritual discipline which is allowing his mind to consistently and rhythmically come back to the truth of God's Word again and again. He shares with Mike a story of when his life was directed and a decision was clarified for him through a memorised passage from Deuteronomy and they speculate on ways in which a church community, which is memorizing the same scripture passages might greet each other, and how the preaching (and discipleship) ministry could be enhanced. Kieran has developed a text-message based scripture memorization system that has served him and his community called Malachi Daily; to sign up (for free) visit https://malachidaily.com/?via=expositor-s-collective Kieran Lenahan is a husband, foster/adoptive dad to 2 toddlers and an entrepreneur working at the intersection of entrepreneurship and spiritual formation. He's a coach to faith driven entrepreneurs and the co-founder of Malachi Daily, a subscription service that helps Jesus followers memorize 1 passage of Scripture a week and learn its context, via text messages. When he’s not working, you can find him on the basketball court, in a body of water or spending time with his family. “And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man.” (Luke 2:52, ESV) “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on His law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; for the LORD knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.” Psalm 1:1-6 Recommended Episodes: Jonathan Pennington on the benefits of scripture memorization (and the Sermon on the Mount) https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2022/7/12/the-preaching-style-of-jesus-with-jonathan-pennington Dave Sylvester on meditation and contemplation during his sermon preparation process: https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2019/10/1/episode-67-the-preachers-meditation Suzy Silk in Biblical Meditation: https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2022/7/5/seeing-christ-responsibly-in-the-old-testament-suzy-silk For information about our upcoming training events visit ExpositorsCollective.com The Expositors Collective podcast is part of the CGNMedia, Working together to proclaim the Gospel, make disciples, and plant churches.
