Purchasing Capital Intensive Equipment

4/29/2024
When purchasing capital-intensive items for your handyman business, you want to make sure you're making sound investments that will benefit your business in the long term. Here are some recommendations: 1. Assess Your Needs: Before making any purchase, carefully assess your business needs. Consider the types of jobs you commonly undertake and what equipment would make those tasks easier, faster, or more efficient. 2. Quality Over Price: While it can be tempting to opt for cheaper options to save money upfront, investing in high-quality tools and equipment often pays off in the long run. Quality items are more durable, reliable, and may require less maintenance, ultimately saving you money over time. 3. Research and Compare: Take the time to research different brands, models, and features of the items you're considering purchasing. Compare prices, read reviews from other professionals in your field, and seek recommendations from colleagues or industry experts. 4. Consider Long-Term Costs: Look beyond the initial purchase price and consider the long-term costs associated with maintenance, repairs, and operational expenses. Factor in things like warranties, spare parts availability, and the reputation of the manufacturer for customer support. 5. Invest in Versatility: Choose tools and equipment that offer versatility and can be used for a variety of tasks. This can help maximize the value of your investment and reduce the need to purchase multiple specialized items. 6. Evaluate Financing Options: Depending on the cost of the items you're purchasing, explore financing options such as equipment leasing or financing plans. This can help spread out the cost over time and free up capital for other business needs. 7. Plan for Growth: Anticipate the future needs of your business and invest in items that will support its growth and expansion. Consider whether the equipment you're purchasing can scale with your business as it evolves. 8. Stay Updated on Technology: Keep abreast of advancements in technology and innovation within your industry. While it's important to invest in reliable, proven equipment, don't overlook the potential benefits of newer technologies that could improve efficiency and productivity. 9. Safety First: Prioritize safety when selecting equipment. Ensure that the items you purchase meet industry safety standards and provide adequate protection for you and your employees. 10. Track Expenses and ROI: Keep thorough records of your equipment purchases and track their return on investment (ROI) over time. This will help you make more informed decisions in the future and identify areas where cost savings or improvements can be made. Taking Money

4/8/2024
Handymen typically accept various forms of payment for their services to accommodate the preferences and convenience of their clients. Here are some common forms of accepting payment: 1. Cash: Cash payments are straightforward and immediate. Many handymen prefer cash payments as they are easy to handle and don't involve transaction fees. 2. Checks: Some clients prefer to pay by personal or business checks. Handymen may accept checks but usually wait for them to clear before considering the job complete. 3. Credit/Debit Cards: Accepting credit or debit card payments allows handymen to offer convenient payment options to their clients. This can be done through mobile card readers or online payment processing services. 4. Online Payment Platforms: Handymen can utilize online payment platforms such as PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, or other similar services to receive payments electronically. 5. Bank Transfers: Clients may opt to make direct bank transfers to the handyman's account. This method can be convenient for both parties, especially for larger transactions. 6. Payment Apps: Mobile payment apps like Zelle, Google Pay, or Apple Pay provide another convenient option for transferring funds securely. 7. Invoice and Payment Terms: Some handymen may work with clients on invoicing and payment terms, allowing for installment payments or setting up payment plans for larger projects. 8. Bartering: In some cases, handymen might accept goods or services in exchange for their work. This could involve trading services with other professionals or accepting goods as payment. It's essential for handymen to communicate clearly with their clients about their preferred payment methods and any associated fees or terms. Additionally, using written contracts or agreements can help ensure clarity regarding payment expectations for both parties. Every Door Direct

3/25/2024
In this episode the Handyman Pros have a discussion about Every Door Direct. Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM) is a service offered by the United States Postal Service (USPS) that allows businesses to send targeted marketing materials to specific neighborhoods or ZIP codes without needing a list of addresses. Instead of addressing each piece individually, businesses can select postal routes and have their mail pieces delivered to every household along those routes. Here's how the EDDM service generally works: 1. Targeting: Businesses can use USPS's online mapping tool to select specific postal routes based on factors like demographics, household size, income, and age. This allows them to target the areas that are most likely to be interested in their products or services. 2. Design: Once the desired postal routes are selected, businesses can design their mail pieces according to USPS specifications. These specifications include size, weight, and layout requirements. The USPS website provides templates and guidelines to ensure compliance. 3. Printing: After designing the mail pieces, businesses need to get them printed. Many printing companies offer EDDM services and can handle both the printing and mailing aspects of the campaign. 4. Preparation: Before mailing, the mail pieces need to be bundled and prepared according to USPS regulations. This typically involves bundling them by postal route and completing the necessary paperwork. 5. Delivery: Once prepared, the mail pieces are delivered to the appropriate USPS facility for distribution. The USPS then delivers the mail to every household along the selected postal routes. 6. Cost: EDDM can be a cost-effective way to reach a large number of potential customers since it eliminates the need for purchasing mailing lists and allows for discounted postage rates. Overall, EDDM is a convenient and affordable option for businesses looking to reach a targeted audience within a specific geographic area. It's particularly popular among small businesses, local restaurants, real estate agents, and other entities that want to promote their products or services to nearby residents. Stacking a Washer and Dryer

3/11/2024
In this episode, Larry and John move a laundry room cabinet and stack the washer and dryer. Moving a laundry room cabinet and stacking a washer and dryer can be a manageable DIY project with the right tools and precautions. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you through the process: 1. Plan and Prepare: Measure the space where you plan to stack the washer and dryer to ensure they will fit comfortably. o Clear out any items from the cabinet and the area where you will be working. o Gather the necessary tools and materials, including a screwdriver, adjustable wrench, level, safety goggles, and any additional hardware required for securing the washer and dryer. 2. Disconnect Utilities: Turn off the power to the washer and dryer by unplugging them from the electrical outlet or switching off the circuit breaker. Turn off the water supply to the washer by closing the valves on the water supply lines. Disconnect the hoses and drain pipes from the washer and dryer. Be prepared for any water that may spill out during this process by placing towels or a bucket nearby. 3. Move the Cabinet: Empty the cabinet of any items and remove the shelves if necessary. Use a screwdriver or drill to remove any screws or fasteners securing the cabinet to the wall or floor. Carefully lift and move the cabinet to its new location, ensuring it is level and stable. 4. Stack the Washer and Dryer: Position the dryer on top of the washer, making sure they are aligned properly. Use a stacking kit or brackets designed for your specific washer and dryer models to secure them together. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation. Use a level to ensure the stacked appliances are balanced and stable. 5. Reconnect Utilities: Reconnect the hoses and drain pipes to the washer and dryer, ensuring they are properly secured. Turn on the water supply and check for any leaks. Plug in the washer and dryer to the electrical outlet or switch on the circuit breaker. 6. Test the Appliances: o Run a test cycle on the washer and dryer to ensure they are functioning properly. o Check for any unusual noises or vibrations that may indicate an issue with the installation. 7. Secure the Cabinet (if necessary): o If the cabinet needs to be secured to the wall or floor in its new location, use appropriate screws or fasteners to secure it in place. 8. Clean Up: o Dispose of any packaging materials and clean up any debris from the installation process. o Return any items to the cabinet and organize the laundry room as desired. 9. Safety Precautions: o Always follow safety guidelines when moving heavy appliances and using power tools. o Use caution when handling electrical and plumbing connections to avoid injury or damage. By following these steps carefully, you can successfully move a laundry room cabinet and stack a washer and dryer to optimize space and functionality in your laundry room. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/handymanpros/message

Contract Terms and Conditions: Review the contract terms and conditions thoroughly. Ensure that they are clear, comprehensive, and protect your interests as well as the customers. 9. Evaluate Problem-Solving Skills: Assess the your problem-solving skills and ability to adapt to unexpected challenges or changes in the project scope. 10. A Business Card On My Lawn!

2/26/2024
The Handyman Pros have a discussion about putting business cards in someone's yard without their explicit permission and why it is generally not advisable; several reasons: 1. Intrusiveness: Placing business cards in someone's yard without their consent can be seen as intrusive and disrespectful of their property. It may be perceived as an unwelcome intrusion into their personal space, leading to negative feelings towards your business. 2. Unsolicited Advertising: Many people consider unsolicited advertising materials, such as business cards left in yards, to be spam-like behavior. This can create a negative impression of your business and may even result in complaints from homeowners or neighborhood associations. 3. Environmental Concerns: Business cards left in yards can contribute to littering and environmental pollution if they are not disposed of properly. This goes against principles of environmental responsibility and sustainability. 4. Potential Legal Issues: Depending on local regulations, distributing advertising materials like business cards without permission may be prohibited or subject to fines. It's important to familiarize yourself with relevant laws and regulations before engaging in such practices. 5. Low Effectiveness: Placing business cards in yards is a passive and untargeted marketing approach. It relies on chance encounters rather than targeted outreach to potential customers who are more likely to be interested in your products or services. As a result, the return on investment (ROI) for this marketing tactic is often low. Instead of placing business cards in yards without permission, the Pros discuss how businesses should focus on more targeted and permission-based marketing strategies. This could include digital marketing, social media advertising, direct mail campaigns to targeted mailing lists, or networking within the community through events and local partnerships. These approaches are more likely to yield positive results and build a stronger, more engaged customer base Watch us on YouTube (click here) Subscribe to our free newsletter, https://handymanprosradioshow.com/newsletter-signup/ Join our Facebook group @handyman pros Send us an email, questions@handymanprosradioshow.com --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/handymanpros/message

Things No One Tells You About Home Ownership

2/19/2024
In this episode the Handyman Pros have a discussion about homeownership. Homeownership comes with numerous responsibilities and considerations that may not be immediately apparent to first-time homeowners. Here are ten things that are often not discussed but are important to know about homeownership: 1. Maintenance Costs: Beyond mortgage payments, homeowners must budget for ongoing maintenance and repairs. This can include expenses for lawn care, HVAC system maintenance, plumbing issues, and more. 2. Property Taxes and Insurance: Property taxes and homeowners insurance are recurring expenses that can significantly impact your budget. These costs can vary based on location and the value of your home. 3. Unexpected Repairs: No matter how well-maintained your home is, unexpected repairs can arise. It's crucial to have an emergency fund to cover these unforeseen expenses, such as a leaking roof or a malfunctioning furnace. 4. Homeowners Association (HOA) Fees: If your property is part of a homeowners association, you'll be responsible for paying HOA fees. These fees cover community amenities and maintenance but can add to your monthly expenses. 5. Utility Costs: As a homeowner, you'll be responsible for all utility bills, including electricity, water, gas, and trash removal. These costs can vary based on usage and local rates. 6. Home Improvement Projects: Homeownership often involves ongoing home improvement projects to maintain or enhance the value of your property. These projects can be time-consuming and costly, requiring careful planning and budgeting. 7. Seasonal Maintenance: Different seasons bring specific maintenance tasks, such as cleaning gutters in the fall, winterizing pipes in colder climates, and preparing the lawn for spring. Understanding these seasonal maintenance requirements is essential for preserving your home. 8. Property Appreciation Isn't Guaranteed: While real estate generally appreciates over time, it's not guaranteed. Economic factors, market trends, and the condition of your home and neighborhood can influence property values. 9. Flexibility and Responsibility: As a homeowner, you have the freedom to personalize your space but also the responsibility to maintain it. This includes adhering to local regulations, obtaining permits for renovations, and being considerate of neighbors. 10. Long-Term Financial Commitment: Homeownership is a long-term financial commitment that extends beyond monthly mortgage payments. It's essential to consider your financial stability and future plans before purchasing a home. Understanding these aspects of homeownership can help you make informed decisions and better navigate the responsibilities of owning a home. Tips To Keep Your Shower Clean!

1/22/2024
Certainly! Here are some tips for keeping your shower clean: Daily Wipe Down: After each shower, use a squeegee or a microfiber cloth to wipe down the surfaces. This helps prevent the buildup of soap scum and water spots. Ventilation: Ensure proper ventilation in your bathroom. Use the exhaust fan or open a window to reduce humidity, which can contribute to mold and mildew growth. Shower Curtain Care: If you have a shower curtain, make sure to spread it out after each use to allow it to dry. Wash it regularly to prevent mold and soap scum buildup. Use a Shower Cleaner: Regularly clean your shower with a suitable cleaner. You can use commercial shower cleaners or make your own using a mixture of white vinegar and water. Prevent Soap Scum: Consider using shower gels or liquid soap instead of bar soap, as they tend to leave less residue. Additionally, opt for a soap scum prevention product. Water Softener: If you live in an area with hard water, consider using a water softener. Hard water can leave mineral deposits on your shower surfaces, making it harder to clean. Clean Showerhead: Mineral deposits can also accumulate in your showerhead. Clean it regularly by soaking it in vinegar or a descaling solution. Grout Maintenance: Keep the grout between tiles clean by scrubbing it regularly. You can use a toothbrush or a grout brush for this purpose. Use a Shower Caddy: Keep your shower essentials organized with a shower caddy. This prevents bottles and soap from sitting directly on surfaces, reducing the chance of scum buildup. Deep Clean Periodically: In addition to regular cleaning, schedule a deep clean of your shower periodically. This may involve more intensive scrubbing and using specialized cleaners for stubborn stains. By incorporating these tips into your routine, you can maintain a cleaner and more hygienic shower space. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/handymanpros/message

Cheapest and Most Expensive Appliances

1/8/2024
The cost of running appliances in your home can vary depending on factors such as energy efficiency, usage patterns, and local utility rates. However, some appliances generally tend to consume more energy and can be more expensive to run. Here are some examples: Heating and Cooling Systems: HVAC systems, including air conditioners and electric heaters, can be significant contributors to high energy bills, especially if they are older or inefficient. Refrigerators and Freezers: These appliances are always on, and their energy consumption can add up over time. Old or inefficient models may use more energy than newer, energy-efficient ones. Water Heaters: Water heaters, especially those that rely on electricity, can be energy-intensive. Tankless water heaters are generally more energy-efficient than traditional tank-style heaters. Clothes Dryers: Electric clothes dryers consume a considerable amount of energy. Using a clothesline or opting for a gas dryer can be more energy-efficient alternatives. Ovens and Stoves: Electric ovens and stoves can use a significant amount of energy, particularly if used frequently. Gas-powered alternatives are often more energy-efficient. Dishwashers: Older or less efficient dishwashers may use more water and energy. Using energy-efficient models or washing dishes by hand can be more sustainable options. Computers and Home Office Equipment: Computers, printers, and other electronic devices in your home office can contribute to energy costs, especially if left on when not in use. To reduce energy costs, consider investing in energy-efficient appliances, using appliances during off-peak hours, and practicing energy-saving habits such as turning off lights and unplugging electronics when not in use. Additionally, conducting a home energy audit can help identify specific areas where you can improve energy efficiency. Episode Title: It Happened to Me: Stories from the Field

12/18/2023
Larry spent a whole Sunday clearing a drain clog in a sewer line at a rental house. This is the story and how to prevent these types of problems. Flushing certain items down the drain can lead to clogs, plumbing issues, and environmental problems. Here are the top five things that homeowners should avoid flushing down the drain: 1. Grease and Cooking Oils: o Pouring grease and cooking oils down the drain might seem convenient, but they can solidify and cause blockages in your pipes over time. Instead, let them cool and solidify in a container, then dispose of them in the trash. 2. Flushable Wipes: o Despite the label "flushable," many wipes do not break down as easily as toilet paper and can contribute to blockages in sewage systems. It's better to dispose of them in the trash. 3. Paper Towels and Tissues: o While toilet paper is designed to break down in water, paper towels and tissues are more durable and can cause clogs in pipes. Dispose of them in the trash rather than flushing them. 4. Medications: o Flushing expired or unused medications down the drain can contribute to water pollution and harm aquatic ecosystems. Instead, participate in a medication take-back program or follow proper disposal guidelines provided by local authorities. 5. Dental Floss: o Dental floss is not biodegradable and can contribute to clogs. It can also wrap around and damage plumbing components. Dispose of dental floss in the trash. Remember, the best way to prevent plumbing issues is to be mindful of what goes down the drain. If you're unsure about the flushability of an item, it's generally safer to dispose of it in the trash. Regular maintenance, such as using drain screens and scheduling professional inspections, can also help prevent costly plumbing problems.
