Welcome back to Behind Greatness. We sat down with Matthew Roberts at his home on the East Coast and we were treated with a thoughtful talk on a fascinating subject. Matthew worked in the US Navy as a Cryptologist for 16 years where he spent many years working on encryption/decryption communication process to catch the bad guys the world round. He is also recognized as being featured in Episode 1 of the 2023 Netflix series Encounters. Starting in 2015 he began to have a series of fascinating profound personal experiences after being on board the USS Roosevelt during the famous Gimbal and the Go Fast events. The Navy later described these events as incursions by unidentified aerial phenomena into military training ranges. These events completely changed the course of Matthew’s life, who had been a life-long atheist up to this point in his life. Bruce is an expert in US foreign Policy, an author of various books and graphic novels, a playwright, and a musician. In 2016, he decided to face the risk of “academic suicide” and came out to his colleagues with what he has lived with all his life. Since he was a little boy Bruce has also lived a paranormal life. Today we sit down with Kevin Day at his home in Oregon. Kevin is retired from the Navy where he held numerous positions over an 18 year span, including Air Intercept Control Supervisor, Anti-Air Warfare Coordinator and Strike Group Air Defense Subject Matter Expert. Kevin brings us through his first hand emotional account of the tragic day that Iran Air Flight 955 was shot down by missiles fired from his ship, the USS Vincennes in 1988. We learn that while that episode nearly broke him, he resolved to stay in the Navy and become the best he could be in that service. We hear about his extraordinary experience in November of 2004 aboard the US Princeton as Chief Radar Operator on the US West Coast and seeing 100s of “big white candy mints” (as named by his superior) darting through the skies over a span of several days. David Fravor was engaged with the Tic Tacs on the same training mission while Kevin was manning the radar system on the ship below. Kevin describes the safety of flight issues he tried to champion, the mockery he endured, the vindication and the sober reflection of a man who knows himself if the shoe were on the other foot.
