Ep.110 A Healer, Always Wanting to Know More About Health – Anna Esparham, MD

5/12/2024
At 14 years old she contracted E.coli, which led to sepsis and many subsequent health challenges. Later a polyglandular autoimmune syndrome which led to chronic fatigue during medical school. She was disappointed there was not more education on lifestyle modifications to optimize health. This led her to seek knowledge on Integrative medicine, and acupuncture. At a Helms Medical Acupuncture Institute course she met a few osteopathic physicians who introduced her to osteopathic manipulative treatment. Finding herself living in the town where osteopathy was founded she applied to the plus one year at the ONMM residency in Kirksville, MO. Now she will be the OMM course director of the second year osteopathic medical students at ATSU. We are fortunate to have her in our profession and thank her for the work she is doing forming the next generation of osteopathic physicians. Ep.109 Serving Others and Awe for Nature – Jared Cruz, DO

5/5/2024
After a near death experience, he realized his life had a purpose - that of serving others. He wasn’t sure what this would look like until he worked with an osteopathic physician. Then and there he knew this was his path. During medical school he participated in a 40 hour cranial course which helped him appreciate in a knew way the dignity of the person and the patient. Now working as a traveling physician, he sees how the philosophy of osteopathy treating the whole person Body, Mind and Spirit is important to improve our healthcare system and as a juxtaposition from the influence of purely technocratic data driven approach to a person’s health. He also works as part of the marketing committee for the Osteopathic Cranial Academy Foundation, promoting osteopathy to the public and the future generation of osteopathic physicians. Ep.107 Walking Tour of Kirksville, MO with Jason Haxton MA, DO (h.c.)

4/14/2024
This past weekend a few of us MSU residents decided to take a road trip to the birthplace of osteopathy – Kirksville, MO. Some of the highlights were visiting the Museum of Osteopathy, Dr. Still’s gravesite, touching the boots he wore and the staff he used. Jason, our guide, did an incredible job recounting the history and showing that although Still had his gifts he also had his limitations. I hope every osteopath is able to make it to Kirksville, and if you can’t well here are a few stories to share what it’s like. Reach out to the podcast at the onmmpodcast@gmail.com with questions comments or if you would like to be on the podcast. Ep.102 A Journey Toward Wholeness – Mel Friedman, DO FCA

2/11/2024
His life evolves around love, love for self and love for the patient in front of him. One of his mentors the great Robert Fulford, DO said love holds everything together. All people are loveable because of their inherent health however great or little it may be. The person’s health, according to Dr. Friedman is vastly more intelligent than the provider. In his practice the provider is to be in tune with health or in tune with what may be lacking inherent motion. This health is perceived through “Stillness”. Perception, he says, is not a projection. Perception is not willed. Perception should be of what is true. Enjoy this conversation which bounces between the physical and spiritual. Ep.101 Art, Acupuncture and OMT… a somatic psychiatrist who lets his hands guide treatment – Alex King, DO

2/4/2024
He is an artist, neuroscientist with synesthesia who has a unique view and experience of the world. He brings this experience to his medical practice. Rooted in his knowledge of human anatomy, osteopathic techniques and understanding the human condition allows his perception of the person to guide him to where and how he should treat. For him osteopathy is this dance of two biological systems fighting chaos. While treating he does his best to get out of the way, meeting the person where they are, listening to what the patient says, paying attention to nonverbal cues and being empathetic. He is an expert in acupuncture, using it as a means to help patients who manifest psychosomatic problems. He believes in the importance of breathing, sharpening your mind, healing your body and bolstering your spirit as a way to help your treatments be more effective. He is a researcher pushing the specialty of OMM forward. Enjoy this dynamic and informative conversation with Dr. King, DO an osteopathic healer. Ep.93 Know the Cause, Know Anatomy, and Restore Blood Flow – Chris Stephenson, DO

10/1/2023
He is an internist whose heart lies in the philosophy of osteopathy. He reminds us medicine is both art and science. For both him and Dr. Still, osteopathy begins with anatomy. He visualizes the anatomy as he treats the patient, restoring motion and more specifically the blood flow. You must know anatomy to find and help restore health. Throughout his many years of clinical experiences working as an internist and understanding disease processes, he has trained himself to palpate and understand visceral somatic dysfunction. He has a reverence for the patient in front of him, listening and allowing the body to tell him what it needs. He attracts crowds of students during the Evening with the Stars, at the annual convocation so much so that students have asked him to come to teach at their medical school. Enjoy our conversation!
