Marlenne Perez placed third at Regionals Poth Pirette lifter Marlenne Perez competed in the THSWPA Region 5 meet March 5 in Edinburg in the 220-lb. unequipped division. The Nixon-Smiley Lady Mustangs competed at the THSWPA Region V 3A Division II Regional Powerlifting meet held on March 5 at the Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg, where several athletes delivered strong performances and three lifters earned spots at the State meet. Leading the Lady Mustangs was Ruby Mendez, who finished third in the 114-pound weight class with an impressive 705-pound total, consisting of a 250-pound squat, 175-pound bench press, and 280-pound deadlift. The Nixon-Smiley Mustangs continued their dominance on the platform Saturday, winning their third straight Regional Championship at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association Region 4 Division 3 Championships held March 7 in Navasota. The Mustangs powered their way to the team title with 37 total points, finishing well ahead of runners-up Van Vleck and Vanderbilt Industrial, who each scored 23 points. The Polish American Council of Texas (PACT) will award [post_excerpt],000 scholarships to four winners of its 2026 essay contest on the topic, “A Polish Texan’s Story.” To write the essay, a contest participant must interview a person living in Texas who is either Polish or of Polish descent and write about their or their family’s immigration to Texas and involvement in Polish-interest activities. Stockdale High School is sending a student to the State VASE (Visual Arts Scholastic Event) contest. On Feb. 28, 19 students from Stockdale High School participated in the VASE Competition at East Central High School with 21 different art pieces. The event had exactly 1,000 entries from 83 teachers, 39 schools, and 18 school districts. Stockdale received 19 regional medals: •12 medals in Division 2 •Seven medals in Division 3.
