Fitzroy - Brett Stephens

This week we go back in time with former Fitzroy Lion defender Brett Stephens. Brett reminisces about his career, reflects on some of his favorite moments and people in the game. Brett, a mature-age recruit, was picked up by the Fitzroy Football Club as a 26-year-old in the 1987 season. After stints with Essendon Reserves, playing in Tasmania and playing in Western Australia, Brett went on to play 133 games over 7 seasons with the Lions, which featured captaincy responsibilities, State of Origin selection and Australian International rules representation. In this chat, Brett talks about his long apprenticeship before playing in the major league, playing under David Parkin, his role as a defender and playing on the gun forwards, the tough on field times at Fitzroy and his move onto the professional tennis circuit working with some of the game's greatest names. Andrew, a mature age recruit from Sandringham, made his way to the Hawthorn Football Club for the 1987 season. A ready-made defender, Andrew spent 10 seasons in the brown and gold, accumulating 212 games, which featured premierships in 1988, 1989 and 1991. Geelong / Port Adelaide - Shayne Breuer

This week we go back in time with former Geelong and Port Adelaide forward Shayne Breuer. Shayne reminisces about his career, reflects on some of his favorite moments and people in the game. Shayne, a Wimmera Football product, was drafted by the Geelong Cats in the 1993 AFL National Draft with pick 70, after a standout season in the SANFL. Shayne played three seasons in the hoops, playing a total of 71 games including the 1994 and 1995 AFL Grand Finals. He then ventured to Port Adelaide as an inaugural squad member, playing three seasons and 54 games. In this episode, Shayne talks about his unexpected drafting to Geelong, being a regular fixture in a very strong Geelong squad, playing alongside Gazza, moving to Port Adelaide, kicking the first ever goal for the Power and playing in the showdowns. Melbourne / West Coast - Andy Lovell

This week we go back in time with former Melbourne and West Coast midfielder Andy Lovell. Andy reminisces about his career, reflects on some of his favourite moments and people in the game. Andy, a proud Tasmanian football product, was recruited by the Melbourne Football Club for the 1988 VFL season. He played 22 games in his debut season, including the 1988 Grand Final against Hawthorn. During his 8 year stint with the Demons, he played 121 games and kicked 146 goals. In 1996, Andy made the move to the West Coast Eagles, spending a further three seasons with the royal blue and gold, playing 43 games. In this episode, Andy talks about moving to Victoria to pursue his AFL dream, his debut year of 1988, the difficulty of the 1991 season, his eight goal haul against Richmond, moving to West Coast and his extensive AFL coaching experiences. Justin's long association with the St Kilda Football Club began in the late 1980's with the teams U19 squad. He secured a place on the senior list in 1992. Justin wore the red,white and black on 252 occasions during his 15 year AFL career. AFL Club CEO - Cameron Schwab

This week we go back in time with former Essendon and Sydney big man Ryan O'Connor. Ryan reminisces about his career, reflects on some of his favourite moments and people in the game. Ryan, who hails from Ulverstone, Tasmania - made his way to the Essendon Football Club via the 1991 AFL National Draft, where he was selected with pick 37. Ryan made his senior debut in the 1994 season, he represented the black and red on 63 occasions, kicking 47 goals. At the end of the 1998 season, the 192cm forward received a second chance, playing with the Sydney Swans for two seasons, playing a further 24 games. Essendon/St KIlda/Sydney - Craig O'Brien

This week we go back in time with former Essendon, St Kilda and Sydney forward Craig O'Brien. Craig reminisces about his career, reflects on some of his favourite moments and people in the game. Craig, who was recruited from the Mornington Peninsula, first started his VFL/AFL journey with the Essendon Football Club in 1989. He played with the Bombers for three seasons, accumulating 21 games. The next part of his career was at St Kilda, where he spent four seasons, playing 52 games and kicking 116 goals. His next move was with the Sydney Swans, playing in the Harbour City for five seasons, which included playing the 1996 AFL Grand Final. Richmond / Port Adelaide - Chris Naish

This week we go back in time with former Richmond and Port Adelaide goal-sneak Chris Naish. Chris reminisces about his career, reflects on some of his favourite moments and people in the game. Chris, an inventive and clever small forward from Wangaratta, was drafted by Richmond with pick 5 in the 1988 VFL National Draft. Chris made his debut with the Tigers in the 1990 season and then went on to play 143 games in the yellow and black, kicking 212 goals. At the end of 1997 season, Chris was traded to South Australia and played with the Port Adelaide Power for two seasons, adding further 18 games and 16 goals to his tally. Essendon - David Calthorpe

This week we go back in time with Essendon premiership player David Calthorpe. David reminisces about his career, reflects on some of his favourite moments and people in the game. David played with three clubs during his nine year career in the AFL. David's first opportunity came with the Essendon Football Club, where he debuted in 1992 and the next season was a part of the famous Baby Bombers that won the 1993 premiership. During his seven seasons at Windy Hill, David played 92 games and kicked 58 goals. He then joined the Brisbane Lions for one year in 1999 before returning to Victoria and finishing his AFL career with North Melbourne. The left-footer and elite handballer spent six seasons at Punt Road, playing 123 games before a move up north. In 1994, Craig made his way to the Brisbane Bears and was also an inaugural member of the Brisbane Lions squad, playing a further 96 games. This week we go back in time with former Melbourne, Carlton and Port Adelaide small forward Brent Heaver. Brent began his AFL journey with the Melbourne Demons in the 1990 season. He played 12 games in two seasons in the red and blue, before moving to Carlton in 1992. He lined up in the Navy Blue 64 times, which included playing in the 1993 AFL Grand Final. His final two seasons at the top level were with Port Adelaide under the legendary John Cahill. AFL Recruiter - Kinnear Beatson

This week we go back in time with former Brisbane recruiter and current Sydney Swans List Strategy and Recruitment General Manager Kinnear Beatson. Kinnear, a former physical education teacher, has been involved in the VFL/AFL industry since the late 1980's. He coached with the Carlton U19's, then working as the Western Jets Regional Manager in the TAC Cup before moving to Brisbane, to be a part of their AFL recruiting program in 1994. After 12 seasons and three premierships, his next move was to the Sydney Swans, where he remains today. In this episode, Kinnear talks about his start in recruiting, the early years working at the Bears, the amalgamation with Fitzroy, the pressures of having the number one pick, building lists that win premierships, the changes in drafting to the current day and some of his favourite drafting moments.
