Some of the best animal people I know are happy to call themselves pet parents - they love their animals, they care for them, and their animals are family. But I think there is much more to this. I think that the nuance is important. Just as we can miss the moon if the rocket path is off by half a degree, in our desire to be the best partners to animals, I think we miss a really important point, when we designate ourselves in parent roles, rather than in collaborative roles. Kayce explores whether operant conditioning is a conscious process. Operant conditioning is a method that teaches animals to change their behavior in order to control their environment. There is a debate surrounding whether this type of conditioning is conscious.

Natural behavior, resilience, health, and the dog's needs are influencing and even directing the way we teach and care for dogs. This is a good thing and I am happy to be seeing this. The philosophy of SATS has always been one of mutuality: mutual respect, responsibility and benefit. So glad to see a maturation away from tool ideology and toward the documented and studied needs of the dogs.

Dedicated professionals in this swine research unit wanted to change the way pigs perceived blood draw procedures - and so they did. Amazing video from an amazing crew. All animals can benefit from learning to cooperate in their own care.
