Understanding Our Self In Relationships with Dr. Oberdan Marianetti

4/8/2024
In every relationship, there are three entities to consider. There is yourself, your partner, and the relationship as a whole. This conversation was so enlightening with Dr. Oberdan, as we explored the importance of getting to know one's Self, and how that extrapolates into the health of a relationship with another. Sharing your life with someone is a constant dance, and as continuously evolving creatures we always have to give and take, push and pull, and do so effectively with the help of effective communication. Easier said than done, of course! But as Dr. O so eloquently articulates, getting to know one's Self is first and foremost the most important thing. Dr Oberdan Marianetti is a UK-trained psychologist with a US doctorate in Clinical Sexology and combines over two decades of international experience. First as an in-house psychologist for financial institutions where he was the Global Head of the Learning and Organisational Development team at the peak of his career and then as an independent professional.Having successfully transitioned in and out of the corporate world twice, he is well-versed in navigating and understanding the challenges of modern life from both ends of the spectrum. In 2015, Dr Marianetti pursued his calling and opened his first clinic in Singapore to serve the local community, focusing on relationship and sexuality challenges. Dr Marianetti’s trailblazing spirit extends beyond his field of work. Continually driven by a thirst for knowledge and innovation, he remains on a perpetual quest for new theories, approaches, and techniques, all aimed at finding more impactful ways to assist his clients in rediscovering their inner power and purpose. Navigating Life Through Wise Mind

3/11/2024
"Wise mind" is a concept often used in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), a type of psychotherapy developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan. It refers to a state of mind where an individual integrates both emotional and rational thinking processes in order to lead to better decision-making and emotional regulation. In DBT, wise mind is considered the optimal mental state for making decisions and coping with life's challenges, and through my DBT journey and learning and integrating more of wise mind in my interactions, it has completely transformed my life in more ways than one. The idea behind wise mind is that there are three primary states of mind: emotional mind, rational mind, and wise mind. Emotional mind is dominated by emotions, while rational mind is dominated by logical thinking. Wise mind is the balance between the two, where emotions are acknowledged and considered alongside rational thought. Don't get me wrong I don't always get it right. I often get overwhelmed by certain choices and decisions and it is then that I feel my emotion mind come in. But like with everything, it's a journey. My goals are to make decisions that are both logical and emotionally healthy, and it all starts with a little mindfulness, baby. Being Mind vs. Doing Mind

2/12/2024
In this episode, I reflect on how can we access our BEING mind in the midst of a DOING world? Upon recording this episode, I am in the depths of the alps, in a valley called Roseg, just outside of the bougie town of St. Moritz. My holiday mode is in full activation, and I can feel my body and mind in a very quiet, serene state of rest. I am far from the bustling city of Singapore, I am away from the friendship orbs and home responsibilities, I am away from the sheer buzz I can feel from my fellow neighbors. The complete change of environment has put in me in a state of BEING which I can feel so intimately. It's like I’ve taken a back seat in life, where this time and space has allowed me to relish on the little miracles Life has to offer. I can find my breath with greater ease, and more often. The attitude of gratitude becomes more apparent. A stark contrast from the constant swirl of energy and the need to fill in moments of down time that I experience in Singapore. I often wonder why simply doing nothing proves to be such a challenge in the city, not to mention the perception that if you aren’t doing anything, you are wasting your time and thus aren’t moving efficiently on the hamster wheel. As I feel my nervous system "smoothen" out, it has got me reflecting on what it means to be in BEING state of mind vs a DOING state of mind. I am reflecting on the ways I live in both extremes, and why it is that we can’t find this middle ground where there is a healthy balance of simply BEING, and thus so tied into the moment, but also to operate in a healthy state of DOING where we can support ourselves financially and to keep that drive and fire in our bellies burning. Check Your Facts Before You React!

12/18/2023
Have you reacted to a trigger out of an assumption? It is important to take the opportunity to step back, as the observer, and sort through what we are noticing, rather than getting caught up in and carried away by unchecked thoughts, without realising that we may be consumed by them. This is when we become prone to reacting from emotions rather than responding to the facts of the situation. We end up experiencing these really intense emotions and have unnecessary suffering. Suffering is not necessary. I find that one of the outcomes of working on your emotional maturity, is being able to examine whether our emotional reaction FITS THE FACTS of the situation we are in. How many times have you reacted to what someone said because of a situation and you become completely engrossed in that emotion. You have justified the ways that you are right for feeling a certain way when really, it might have been stemmed from a fear, or an unearthed trauma, or simply a trigger embedded deep into your subconscious. It happens! But, one of the biggest lessons and takeaways on this journey of emotional regulation, and really on my mental health, is actually training myself to take the time to slow down, and check the facts of the situation before I react. To RESPOND to the facts of the situation instead of REACTING to the emotions that I flood my system. I learned this tool from the Dialectical Behavioural Therapy course I have been doing for the past couple of months, and it's proven to be soooo effective! I do hope you enjoy this episode! To My Wellness Warriors Who Like To Party

11/20/2023
This episode was a deep reflection on my lifestyle, as a result of a conversation with a friend. She asked, is it possible to be in the "wellness space" when you like to go out, stay out late at night, dance, and not live completely "green"? I thought about what being "well" meant to be, and came to the conclusion that it's all about balance. About tuning in and doing what is right for your body, mind, and spirit.Yes, it will take some discipline, yes it will require you to say "NO" to opportunities/events. But this doesn't mean you have to give up going to a party, or having a 3rd glass of wine. I am curious, what does wellness mean to you? Reach out to be with your thoughts! Living to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones

10/9/2023
This week, I recap the Netflix series "Living to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones." I was absolutely thrilled to watch this series as I feel it was so in line with the ethos of this podcast. The show was hosted and created by author, researcher, and explorer Dan Buettner, who is best known for his exploration of Blue Zones. The Blue Zones are specific regions around the world where people have a notably higher life expectancy and a lower incidence of age-related diseases. These areas include regions in Italy, Japan, Greece, Costa Rica, and the United States. Buettner's research aims to uncover the lifestyle and cultural factors that contribute to the longevity of individuals in these regions. Dan Buettner's work has contributed to a better understanding of how lifestyle and environmental factors can impact human longevity and well-being. His research has encouraged individuals and communities to make positive changes in their habits and environments to lead healthier, longer lives. The Importance Of Grounding Before Any Presentation

9/11/2023
We've all heard about the importance of "staying grounded" amidst the storm. But what we may not fully understand, is that it takes a real sense of effort to embody this sense of grounding when you're about to do a presentation. And to whatever capacity, we all have to present to someone or a group of people at some stage or another. So this shorty is to remind you to come out of your head, and rest down into your body. I have shared many episodes on mindfulness techniques, breathing exercises, and vocal warm ups (Public Speaking Pt 1 & Pt 2) in previous episodes - so this episode is to really remind you to get out of your head, and spend time connecting with your body so that the confidence you seek can emerge from the inside out.
