What’s next for the LA Kings? PLUS: A look at the top 50 free agents

5/2/2024
It’s a milestone episode of The DFO Rundown as Jason and Frank have reached episode 300 of the show. They kicked things off by talking a little bit about that before getting into the hockey talk. They started out in Tampa Bay where the Bolts were bounced in five games by the Florida Panthers. The big story there surrounds the future of their Captain, Steven Stamkos. He’s right near the top of Frank’s ‘Top 50 Free Agents’ list but the guys seem to think he’s going to stay put. That led to some talk about other big name free agents, like Golden Knights forward Jonathan Marchessault, who could be on his way out of Vegas. They also talked about some names lower down the list like Oilers defenseman Vinny Desharnais. That sparked a debate about what the definition of a true second-pairing defenseman is. From there, they got into the playoff talked about broke down the series that Frank is covering between the Vancouver Canucks and Nashville Predators. They also hit on the Golden Knights and Stars and the Oilers taking down the Kings for a third straight season. In this week’s edition of Buy or Sell, Tyler asked the guys a handful of questions relating to the coaching carousel in the NHL. 3:00 - Stamkos’ future in TB 14:00 - Frank’s Top 50 Free Agents 16:00 - The Oilers blueline 24:00 - The remaining first-round series 27:35 - Canucks vs Predators 31:30 - What will the Kings do? 38:00 - Buy or Sell Want to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? 4/25/2024
Utah officially welcomed it’s team to town as former Arizona Coyotes players and staff made their way to Salt Lake City to meet their new fan base. Frank was in the mix for all the festivities and told us all about the vibes. He also updated us on a few things like the status of the teams name and how they’re going to upgrade their arena. The Dallas Stars are down 2-0 and now have to head out to Vegas for the next two games of their series. The Stars were a lot of people’s Stanley Cup pick and now, they’re in serious trouble and it’s not like they’re facing any normal eight seed. The Golden Knights are healthy and look dangerous. They talked about what’s gone wrong for the Stars and why their fans should be concerned. They also hit on the Oilers and Canucks coughing up home ice advantage in game two of their series. The Canucks are going to need to find a way to win without Thatcher Demko, which could be a problem as they head out on the road. For the Oilers, game two was a reminder that momentum does not carry over from game to game. They also talked about the Oilers goaltending. Brad Marchand has also made his presence felt in the Leafs vs Bruins series. He’s in their kitchen according to Jason Gregor and he made a massive impact in game three of the series. The Bruins are up 2-1 and now face an interesting question when it comes to their goaltending. Western Conference First-Round Playoff Preview

4/19/2024
It took until the final day of the regular season, but the four Western Conference playoff series are finally locked in and with that, we are ready to go for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Jason and Frank broke down every series in today’s playoff preview podcast. To kick things off, they went through the surprising results from last night that saw the Vegas Golden Knights lose to the Anaheim Ducks and the Los Angeles Kings beat the Chicago Blackhawks, meaning the Golden Knights are now on a flight to Dallas and the Kings are going back to Edmonton for a third straight first-round matchup. They also broke down the upcoming heavyweight tilt between the Colorado Avalanche, who have stumbled their way into the playoffs, and the Winnipeg Jets, whose strong finish gave them home-ice advantage. The Canucks are also back in the playoffs for the first time since the bubble season and despite the fact that they held the top spot in the Pacific Division for the entire season, there are still people doubting them heading into their series against the Predators. Is that fair? Jason and Frank gave their thoughts. They wrapped up the podcast by giving their full Western Conference playoff brackets and then ended things by each tossing out who they think will be lifting Lord Stanley this June. 0:45 - Nightly Recap 4:16 - Hart Trophy 13:17 Stars vs Golden Knights Preview 18:26 Avalanche vs Jets Preview 29:25 Canucks vs Predators Preview 35:39 Oilers vs Kings Preview 41:59 Western Conference and Cup Final Prediction Want to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? The Final Week of the Regular Season

4/15/2024
With just a few days remaining in the 2023-24 regular season, Frank and Jason broke down everything that’s still on the line as things come to a close. Obviously, there are still two playoff spots up for grabs in the Eastern Conference as the Penguins, Capitals, Islanders, and Red Wings all still have hope. The guys ranked who they think will get the final two spots in the big dance and also talked about what else is on the line this week. There is also a wild tie-breaker scenario brewing that could result in things going down to the sixth tie-breaker. Frank explained all of that. They also hit on Jared Bednar calling out Alexandar Georgiev just days before the playoffs begin. Should the Avs be worried about their current level of play? They’re going to be going up against the red-hot Winnipeg Jets in the first-round of the playoffs. There was a lot of news in the prospect world this week as multiple big name players signed their entry-level deals after the end of the NCAA season, which resulted with Denver winning the National Championship. The guys talked about Cutter Gauthier’s comments before the game, which did not age well. Tyler also swung by with a new edition of Buy or Sell, delivered by DoorDash. They wrapped up the show with a quick update on the Arizona Coyotes relocation situation, which Frank is now calling a win for everybody involved. He explained that and gave the latest on when we’ll have some finalized news. 1:00 - What’s on the line this week? 4:45 - Bednar calls out Georgiev 7:45 - Win and you’re in? 22:25 - Gauthier signs with the Ducks 25:20 - Womens Worlds 31:20 - Buy or Sell (Matthews & Seeding Races) 45:30 - Coyotes update Want to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? The Latest on Relocation

4/11/2024
It’s been a big 24 hours around the NHL as it sounds more and more like the Arizona Coyotes are going to be relocating to Salt Lake City, Utah. Frank has been all over this news, breaking the news yesterday. He and Jason kicked off the podcast by talking about how it got to this point between the league and the Coyotes and also what the next steps could potentially be in this process. Potential Utah Owner Ryan Smith has a home ready for the team to potentially play in. It’s not a perfect fit though and Frank outlined why the league isn’t worried about the arena situation in Salt Lake City. One angle of this involves Coyotes Owner Alex Meruelo potentially winning the upcoming land auction and getting his new arena project going. In that case, there is a chance that the league still one day grant him an expansion franchise. Frank and Jason talked about just how far off expansion could potentially be. After going through the relocation news, the guys jumped back into what’s been going down on the ice as of late. The Eastern Conference playoff picture is about as clear as mud with the Penguins, Islanders, Red Wings, and Capitals all still alive and in the mix. They debated if anyone could jump ahead this weekend. They also looked at Auston Matthews’ chase for 70-goals and shot down any ideas of him magically becoming a Hart Trophy favourite if he hits the milestone. Tyler swung by for a new edition of Fill in the Blank delivered by DoorDash. 1:05 - The latest on relocation 10:00 - How did this come together? 13:50 - How far off is expansion? 22:50 - Eastern Conference playoff race 25:45 - Matthews & the Hart Trophy Want to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? The Penguins & Islanders have revived their seasons

4/8/2024
With less than two weeks remaining in the regular season, the playoff race in the Eastern Conference is just getting spicier and spicier. The Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Islanders have gone from afterthoughts to squarely in the thick of things with their recent run. Can either team finish the job and get into the big dance? Frank and Jason started the show off by talking about what’s going on when it comes to the final two playoff spots that are up for grabs. From there, they continued their post-mortem series as they look at teams that have been officially eliminated from the playoffs. They started today with the Seattle Kraken, who came back down to earth after winning a playoff round last season. Can this team turn things around next season? Or do the Kraken need to take a longer-term approach to things? They then went out East and talked about the Ottawa Senators, who Frank says has the most disappointing season out of any team in the league. The two most talked about moments from their season are two empty-net plays and now the question becomes: can this Senators core actually win? New GM Steve Staois has a lot of big decisions to make in his first offseason at the helm. They wrapped it up by talking about the Calgary Flames. Craig Conroy sold off a lot of important pieces throughout this season and now, he has to decide whether or not to embark on a long rebuild or quickly try to re-tool on the fly. Tyler also swung by for a new edition of Buy or Sell, delivered by DoorDash. 1:10 - The Eastern Playoff Race 10:15 - The state of the Flyers 17:50 - The summer in Seattle 26:30 - The Senators miss again 39:05 - The Calgary Flames 44:05 - Buy or Sell Want to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? The Brawl at MSG & The Penguins Playoff Hopes

4/4/2024
Things got spicy last night at Madison Square Garden as the Rangers and Devils had an old-school brawl off the opening faceoff. It grabbed the attention of the entire sporting world and to begin today’s podcast, Jason and Frank talked about what went down and the reaction to it. From there, they got into the Eastern Conference playoff race. The Pittsburgh Penguins have suddenly worked themselves right back into the fight as almost everyone else in the race continues to play mediocre hockey. The guys talked about how the Pens could approach their big game tonight against the Capitals. The playoff races haven’t exactly been electric this season and that raises the question of whether or not the NHL should add a play-in round similar to what the NBA does. Frank pushed for it and explained the potential benefits while Gregor pushed back on the idea. They then debated who the five biggest Cup Contenders are heading into the final few weeks of the regular season. Spoiler: the Dallas Stars got a lot of love from the guys. Tyler then swung by for a new edition of Fill in the Blank delivered by DoorDash. He asked them a little bit more about the Dallas Stars' strong season and the seeding races in either conference. 1:00 - The Brawl at MSG 11:00 - Penguins Playoff Chances 16:55 - Playoff Expansion 28:16 - Top Five Cup Contenders 31:00 - Are the Oilers in Trouble? 40:25 - Fill in the Blank Want to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? Connor McDavid’s Heater & The Art Ross Race

4/1/2024
The calendar has turned to April and that means we will get Stanley Cup Playoff action this month. There are less than three weeks remaining in the regular season and while the playoff races aren’t as spicy as maybe fans would have liked, there is a fascinating race brewing for the Art Ross Trophy. Connor McDavid has racked up 25 points in his last ten games and is now is right behind both Nathan MacKinnon and Nikita Kucherov and he has games in hand. Jason and Frank started today’s pod by talking about the run that McDavid has been on and who they like in the Art Ross race. That also led to some talk about the Hart Trophy. From there, Frank shared some information on the NCAA Frozen Four tournament. There are some players who’ve been eliminated that are now eligible to sign with NHL teams but a handful of the more big-name prospects have advanced in the tournament and likely won’t be turning pro this season. The guys then continued their post-mortem series by going in-depth on a handful of rebuilding teams. The San Jose Sharks have finally fully committed to their rebuild, but how long will it take for them to become relevant again? They also took a look at the Chicago Blackhawks and the Arizona Coyotes. Tyler also popped in for a new edition of Buy or Sell delivered by DoorDash. 8:20 - Playoff race update 10:10 - Art Ross race 23:50 - Frozen Four 31:10 - The San Jose Sharks tear down 37:20 - Chicago Blackhawks post mortem 45:10 - The future of the Coyotes Want to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? Looking Ahead For The NHL’s Basement Dwellers

3/28/2024
Frank and Jason are back with another fresh edition of The DFO Rundown. They kicked off today’s show by talking about the comments that were made about Oilers forward Zach Hyman earlier this week and the reaction to it. Hyman responded about as well as he could have, scoring the OT Winner in the Oilers' win over the Jets on Tuesday. From there, they decided to take a break from all the talk about the playoff races and instead decided to go to the bottom of the NHL standings and dug into the futures of some of the league's bottom feeders. They started with the Anaheim Ducks. They missed the playoffs again, but was this season a step forward? Frank and Jason debated that. They then dug into the tire-fire that was the Columbus Blue Jackets, who are heading into the summer in need of some big move but still need to name a General Manager. Tyler then swung by for a new edition of Buy or Sell delivered by DoorDash. He asked the guys about which team regrets their deadline decisions the most and he got them to pick their World Series winners on Opening Day. 1:35 - Hyman hits 51 goals (and other things) 11:55 - Frank’s Game 82 memories 14:35 - Post-Mortems - Anaheim Ducks 20:35 - The Columbus Blue Jackets 30:27 - Buy or Sell Want to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? Two New Members of the 50-Goal Club

3/25/2024
As we continue to creep closer to the end of the regular season, there are plenty of storylines emerging. Frank and Jason started the show by talking about the two newest members of the 50-goal club: Sam Reinhart and Zach Hyman. They broke down each players path to the milestone and talked about the narrative that Hymans success is only due to playing with Connor McDavid. From there, they quickly hit on some seeding races in both the East and West. The Predators just keep on rolling and have no more or less locked themselves into the top wild-card spot in the West. Out East, the Capitals are now in the drivers seat when it comes to the final playoff spot. They then got into the Hart Trophy debate. Nathan MacKinnon is the odds on favourite right now but has he locked up the award? The guys debated that and talked about whether or not Kucherov or McDavid have a realistic shot at winning the award. Frank then threw out the idea of a comeback player of the year award and who would win that hypothetical award. Jason also wondered about a breakout player of the year award. Tyler then swung by for a new edition of Buy or Sell delivered by DoorDash. They wrapped up the show by talking about the most chaotic potential first-round matchups. 0:55 - Reinhart & Hyman hit 50 9:20 - Eastern seeding races 11:30 - Preds keep heating up 13:00 - Has MacKinnon locked up the Hart? 24:45 - Comeback player of the year 35:15 - Buy or Sell 47:15 - Chaotic first-round matchups Want to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? What Was & Wasn't Said At The GM Meetings

3/21/2024
Frank is back from covering the NHL GM Meetings in Florida and today on the pod, he and Gregor kicked things off by recapping what the league decided to change within the game. That led to a big conversation about what the league’s General Managers didn’t discuss over the last few days and that sparked a big rant from Gregor about what’s wrong with the NHL’s playoff format. They also hit on the future of emergency goalies and the idea of making it easier for teams to carry a third goalie so we don’t get another ‘E-Bug’ situation. Frank outlined why this is an important issue and he explained a few potential solutions to the problem. The status of the Arizona Coyotes was also brought up. The league had a chance to come out and confirm that the Coyotes would be staying at Mullett Arena and they didn’t do that. Frank explained that point a little bit and explained the timeline that the Coyotes are currently facing. Frank and Jason also talked about the league’s vague comments about CTE in the days following Chris Simon’s passing. Tyler swung by with a fresh edition of Fill in the Blank where he got the guys take on Flyers Head Coach John Tortorella healthy scratching Captain Sean Couturier, the state of the Montreal Canadiens, and a potential first-round playoff matchup in the Western Conference. 0:55 - GM Meetings recap & Gregor’s rant 11:10 - The future of the E-Bug 20:10 - Will the Coyotes stay? 29:40 - Chris Simon’s passing 43:40 - Fill in the Blank Want to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? The Eastern Conference Pillow Fight

3/18/2024
After a quick one-week hiatus, Jason and Frank are back with another edition of podcast. They started the show today by digging into the Eastern Conference playoff race, which is still very much up for grabs as we reach the final month of the regular season. The Red Wings have gone cold, the Capitals are somehow right back in the mix, and the Islanders have struggled to stay consistent. The guys debated which of those three has the best shot to pull away in the race. They also looked at whether or not one of the Penguins, Devils or Sabres have a shot at getting back into the thick of it. Out West, the eight playoff teams appear locked in. The conversation there is all about seeding. The Golden Knights are still a wild card team, that could change. The Canucks are the one seed in the Pacific, but the Oilers are pushing. In the Central, the Stars, Avalanche, and Jets are in an absolute dog fight for the division title. Tyler also popped in with a new edition of Buy or Sell delivered by DoorDash. 1:30 - Eastern Conference playoff race 10:30 - The Preds hot streak 12:20 - Western Conference power rankings 15:20 - Concerns about Dallas? 24:00 - The Penguins & Sharks 29:00 - Buy or Sell 44:30 - Hart Trophy Race 49:10 - GM Meetings update Want to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? The Trade Deadline Recap Show

3/10/2024
Trade season has come and gone with a handful of surprising moves coming down on deadline day. Jason and Frank recapped everything we saw over the last few weeks in a brand new edition of the podcast, with a bit of a twist. Tyler popped in early and today’s episode featured extended versions of both Fill in the Blank and Buy or Sell as Tyler ran the guys through the deadline gauntlet and got their thoughts on almost all the moves that went down and even a few that got close but ultimately didn’t come to fruition. They started with the big stunner: Tomas Hertl going to the Vegas Golden Knights. Did the Sharks get enough? How does this impact the long-term plans that the Golden Knights have? The guys have their thoughts. They also talked about which fan bases deserve to be the most disappointed with their teams moves, or lack of moves, over the last month. They also hit on the Hurricanes winning the Jake Guentzel sweepstakes, the Kuznetsov addition, and Linus Ullmark’s future with the Boston Bruins. To wrap up the show, they looked at the current Stanley Cup odds on Betano and each gave a team that they think is too high and a team that is too low. 2:30 - Hertl to VGK 10:00 - What’s next in San Jose? 16:20 - Most surprising deadline move 21:20 - The Predators deadline 24:40 - The names that didn’t move 28:30 - The most disappointed fan bases 31:20 - Why didn’t the Rangers add more? 33:10 - Guentzel goes to the Canes 38:30 - Can Kuznetsov bounceback? 44:35 - The Leafs’ lack of moves 46:15 - Ullmark stays in Boston 50:35 - Devils add goaltending 53:25 - Which team improved their Stanley Cup odds? 1:01:55 - Which division has the best shot at The Cup? 1:10:00 - The Senators Head Coaching job Want to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? A deadline preview for all 32 teams

3/7/2024
We are just over 24 hours away from the NHL Trade Deadline and to get you ready for the big day, Frank and Jason went through the entire NHL and updated you on what could go down between now and Friday at 3pm eastern. They started with the Atlantic Division where the Florida Panthers made a big move yesterday picking up Vlad Tarasenko from the Ottawa Senators. Frank says they aren’t done. The Ottawa Senators have a few other pieces to sell and could still be looking to move Jakob Chychrun. They wrapped up with some talk about the Toronto Maple Leafs, who have been quiet so far. Out in the Central Division, there are a handful of sellers. They talked about what the Wild, Coyotes, and Blackhawks could get up to before moving on to some of the more aggressive buyers. The Colorado Avalanche are hungry for a goalie and the Jets could still be looking to add some depth. Back to the Eastern Conference, they dug into the what could go down in the Metro Division. They started with the Rangers where Gregor thinks they could stand pat and just make small moves around the edges while Frank thinks they’re in the mix for a big-name forward. They also hit on all the pieces that the Washington Capitals will still be looking to move ahead of the deadline. Out in the Pacific Division, the Vegas Golden Knights and Edmonton Oilers both made big splashes on Wednesday, but are they done? Jason and Frank gave their thoughts. They also talked about the Flames sell-off and whether or not the Canucks could actually be looking to flip Elias Lindholm. Deadline Week Begins

3/4/2024
We are less than a week away from the NHL Trade Deadline and action is starting to pick up. We had some significant news over the weekend with Elias Pettersson officially signing his extension with the Vancouver Canucks and the Washington Capitals waiving Evgeny Kuznetsov. Frank and Jason broke down those two stories and then got into what could be going down this week. There are still some teams who have some tough decisions to make this week. The New Jersey Devils are on the outside looking in when it comes to the playoff race in the Eastern Conference, the Penguins are continuing to sputter along, and the Flames have to make a decision on Jacob Markstrom. There is a lot going on around the league right now. They also talked about a handful of teams in the Western Conference that are expected to make big moves at some point before Friday at 3pm ET. The Oilers are looking for forward help, the Avalanche are looking at options between the pipes, and the Golden Knights seem motivated to spend their LTIR pool. The guys wrapped up with a new edition of Fill in the Blank where they looked at who could be the biggest sellers and who’s the biggest lock to move their first-round pick. 3:00 - Tyler Toffoli’s availability 8:45 - Penguins Apology to Crosby 12:40 - Evgeny Kuznetzov Clears Waivers 18:45 - Rebuilding Washington (Getting Younger) 25:00 - Oilers, Avs, Golden Knights - No Moves Yet 27:15 - Knights Next Move (Buchnevich?) 31:00 - Oilers Next Moves 37:22- Avs Have Been Quiet - (Jake Allen?) 40:50 - Elias Pettersson Contract 44:50 - Fill in the Blank - DoorDash 45:15 - Biggest Lock to trade their 1st (Knights/Avs) 46:35 - Biggest Seller (Washington/Penguins/Wild/Coyotes) 49:00 - Jacob Markstrom Comments 54:20 - Flyers Shouldn't Sell (Seeler, Walker) 58:50 - Panthers (Hanifin?) 1:00:45 - Predators Win Streak (Barrie to Flames?) 1:03:00 - Outro Want to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? Pettersson’s Extension & Tanev’s Moving To Dallas

2/29/2024
We finally got news! It was a wild Wednesday night in the NHL with two big stories breaking within minutes of each other. First, Frank broke the news that the Vancouver Canucks and Elias Pettersson are closing in on a fresh long-term extension that will keep the Swedish star in Vancouver through the bulk of his career. Frank talked about the expected value of the deal and why getting this done now is so significant for both the Canucks and Pettersson. We also got another move involving one of Frank’s top trade targets as the Calgary Flames moved veteran defenseman Chris Tanev to the Dallas Stars for a handful of draft picks and a prospect. Jason and Frank talked about this deal from both sides, which led to some talk about the Stars being one of the most complete teams in the NHL. Gregor thinks they might have the best blueline in the NHL. Frank also talked about the future of Noah Hanifin as the Flames sell-off continues. Who’s in the market? What could the cost be? He answered those questions. They also talked about the LA Kings deadline plans, speculated about what the Golden Knights could get up to, and Gregor chimed in on a couple of teams in the Eastern playoff race. Tyler also swung by for a new edition of Buy or Sell delivered by DoorDash. He asked the guys about how many pieces the Capitals could sell, where Jake Geuntzel could land, and the Canucks deadline plans. 1:00 - Pettersson closes in on new deal 7:35 - Tanev goes to Dallas 15:10 - Hanifin’s future 18:00 - Kings deadline plans 26:40 - The Red Wings are a playoff team 29:45 - Who will the Flyers sell? 35:35 - Buy or Sell 49:00 - Metro playoff race 51:15 - Markstrom & the goalie market Want to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? The Market for Jake Guentzel & the Isles big decision

2/26/2024
We are less than two weeks away from the NHL trade deadline and the market is still remarkably quiet. Jason and Frank started with that today on a fresh episode of The DFO Rundown. The first half of today’s pod was straight trade talk, starting with a big conversation about the New York Islanders. They’re continuing to slip in the Eastern Conference playoff race and Gregor says they should be looking to sell off some pieces. The guys had a conversation about which pieces they could move and what their future could look like. From there, they got into the market for Jake Guentzel and which teams are legitimately in the mix for a player whose spent the bulk of his career riding shotgun with Sidney Crosby. They also talked a little bit about what the return could be. Another top name on the market is Chris Tanev. Jason and Frank each had different ideas of where he could land including the Jets, Stars and Lightning. They also quickly hit on his teammate Noah Hanifin, who had a big weekend. Frank also had a quick thought on what’s going on between Elias Pettersson and the Canucks. In a new edition of Fill in the Blank, Tyler asked the guys about a few teams playoff chances and also, the ceiling for Nikita Kucherov when it comes to his point production. 3:50 - Could the Isles sell? 10:20 -The market for Guentzel 18:55 - Best fits for Guentzel 25:00 - When will CGY move Tanev? 30:35 - Kane’s return to CHI 35:10 - Pettersson & the Canucks 40:15 - Fill in the Blank 50:15 - Rempe’s first week Want to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team?
