Patton Oswalt, Scott Hepburn Talk 'Minor Threats' Comic

3/27/2024
Writer Patton Oswalt and artist Scott Hepburn join host Aaron Sagers to talk the major comic Minor Threats. In a world of superheroes, sometimes the minor league villains can become queens. And the benchwarmer heroes can become legends. Created by Patton Oswalt, Jordan Blum and artist Scott Hepburn, and published by Dark Horse Comics, Minor Threats made an impact in the superhero comic world last year, and now the second volume, "The Fastest Way Down," launches April 3. Also, the trade paperback of The Alternates, about B-list superheroes from the pages of Minor Threats who get a taste of greatness, drops April 17. Patton Oswalt and Scott Hepburn discuss their expanding comic universe, as well as the next upcoming spinoff Barfly and where else they might take these characters. And for good measure, we ask Patton about ghosts and his role in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. MORE ABOUT MINOR THREATS Minor Threats is graphic crime drama about superheroes and villains and the last gasp of the colorful innocent days of the silver and bronze age before they're dragged into the grit-soaked modern era. Now, Minor Threats is back for Volume 2, subtitled “The Fastest Way Down” In the first issue, dropping April 3, Frankie Follis AKA the costumed criminal Playtime has won. Twilight City’s greatest hero The Insomniac and its greatest villain The Stickman are dead, allowing Frankie to unify the super crook underworld and assert herself as the Queenpin of the Redport neighborhood. But Frankie is feeling the pressure from every side. Rival gangs are challenging her authority, her partner Scalpel is pushing her to legitimize her empire, and the act of murdering The Insomniac has broken something deep inside her. Frankie is about to learn the hard way . . . heavy is the head that wears the supervillain crown. But wait, there’s more from the world of Minor Threats: Spinning out of the world of Minor Threats is The Alternates, a tale of costumed underdogs--featuring a support group for superheroes, who are struggling to reclaim their mediocre lives in this world after tasting their true potential in another dimension called The Ledge. That’s written by Oswalt, Blum and Tim Seeley with art by Tess Fowler, Christopher Mitten and covers by Hepburn. AND Dark Horse Comics is buzzing with some exciting news: the world of Minor Threats continues expanding with a new spinoff series, Barfly! Comic book legend Kyle Starks (Where Monsters Lie) joins Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum on writing duties on a feel-good, coming-of-age series about an insect monster-man searching for his identity in the criminal underworld of Twilight City. Ryan Browne, co-creator of the critically-acclaimed series Eight Billion Genies, will provide artwork for Barfly, with letters handled by Nate Piekos (Minor Threats). The first issue will also feature a main cover art by Minor Threats co-creator Scott Hepburn, with three variant covers featuring art by Browne, Martín Morazzo, Dan Hipp (1:10 ratio), and one more to be revealed at a later date. The series is set to begin this July. _______________________________________________________________ If you like Talking Strange, please subscribe, leave a nice review, and share with your friends. Muskegon Michigan's UFO 30 Years Later

2/28/2024
A mass UFO sighting took place in Muskegon Michigan 30 years ago, and the mystery remains. This episode we talk to a key witness of the event. On March 8, 1994, more than 300 people across 42 counties of Michigan — and as far away as 200 Miles — saw strange lights above Lake Michigan for a period of several hours. Along with police officers, documented 911 calls, FAA operators, and other reliable witnesses, Jack Bushong of the National Weather Service was manning the radar, and tracking this strange phenomena. Bushong joins Talking Strange to discuss this occurrence, and is joined by Bill Konkolesky, state director of the Michigan Mutual UFO Network. About the guests: Jack Bushong grew up in Muskegon, Michigan, and knew from an early age that he wanted to be a meteorologist, having always been interested in the weather, astronomy, and science. He received a bachelor’s degree in Meteorology from Florida State University in 1988 and was 29 years old when he was working at the National Weather Service in Muskegon on the night of a dramatic UFO event he tracked on radar. Shortly after the event, he moved to Georgia and became a hydro-meteorologist. He retired in 2016, after an illustrious career with numerous awards and promotions, and now wants to share what happened on the night of March, 8, 1994. Bill Konkolesky has been State Director of the Michigan Chapter of the Mutual UFO Network since 2004. He joined in the organization in 1993 after reporting some of his personal UFO encounters and now, along with his MUFON responsibilities, also does frequent public presentations on the phenomenon and has contributed to numerous UFO related books and television productions. He’s also the author of Experiencer: Raised in Two Worlds, and returns to the Talking Strange show for a second time. _______________________________________________________________ Talking Strange Paranormal Podcast with Aaron Sagers is a weekly paranormal pop culture show featuring celebrity and author interviews, with a weekly "Small Talk" mini-sode with reader submitted letters and spooky tales. Opened in 1989, the site was reported to have set the standard for automobile museums around the world. Since then, it has received many accolades and today it is recognized as one of 10 Best Automobile Museums in the U.S. Big thanks to the Reno-Tahoe Territory for the support in arranging this interview. _______________________________________________________________ Talking Strange Paranormal Podcast with Aaron Sagers is a weekly paranormal pop culture show featuring celebrity and author interviews, with a weekly "Small Talk" mini-sode with reader submitted letters and spooky tales. Victorian Spiritualism with Steele Alexandra Douris

1/18/2024
Who were the Victorians, why were they so fascinated with the paranormal, and how are they continuing to influence our notions of the unexplained? Séances, paranormal investigations, fortune telling, and other spiritualist practices helped define the Victorian era and continue to shape our world today. In the book Spirits, Seers & Séances: Victorian Spiritualism, Magic, & the Supernatural, author Steele Alexandra Douris explores how Victorians, and spiritualists have left such a profound impact on both the past and present — and how belief in ghosts, fairies, and nature spirits shaped our celebrations for All Hallows’ Eve and Christmas More about the Author: Steele Alexandra Douris is an author, artist, and Victorianist, specializing in Victorian spiritualism, crime fiction, and the gothic novel. Destroy All Neighbors: Alex Winter & Jonah Ray Rodrigues

1/11/2024
In the new film Destroy All Neighbors, starring Alex Winter (Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure) and Jonah Ray Rodrigues (Mystery Science Theater 3000), a self-absorbed prog-rock musician runs afoul of his new neighbor which leads to a lot of undead corpses and becomes a "twisted splatter-comedy about a deranged journey of self-discovery." Directed by Josh Forbes and written by Jared Logan, Charles Pieper and Mike Benner with Winter and Rodrigues producing as well as starring, Destroy All Neighbors — debuting on the Shudder streaming service January 12 — tells the story of William Brown (Jonah Ray Rodrigues), a neurotic, self-absorbed musician determined to finish his prog-rock magnum opus. He faces a creative roadblock in the form of a noisy and grotesque neighbor named Vlad (Alex Winter). Finally working up the nerve to demand that Vlad keep it down, William inadvertently decapitates him. But, while attempting to cover up one murder, William’s accidental reign of terror causes victims to pile up and become undead corpses who torment and create more bloody detours on his road to prog-rock Valhalla. Destroy All Neighbors is a twisted splatter-comedy about a deranged journey of self-discovery full of goopy practical FX, a well-known ensemble cast, and LOTS of blood. _______________________________________________________________ Talking Strange Paranormal Podcast with Aaron Sagers is a weekly paranormal pop culture show featuring celebrity and author interviews, with a weekly "Small Talk" mini-sode with reader submitted letters and spooky tales. Krampus & Christmas Creatures with Jeff Belanger

12/13/2023
Seasons Greetings, or rather Season’s Screamings because today we’re talking about the ghouls, monsters, and creepy creatures of Christmas covered in the new book The Fright Before Christmas: Surviving Krampus an other Yuletide Monsters, by Jeff Belanger. According to the book synopsis: "Christmas time is truly the darkest and creepiest time of the year filled with devilish creatures lurking in the shadows waiting to get us. Best known is the Krampus who has been the subject of films and songs. There was a time in the late 1800s when people sent Krampus cards, not holiday greetings. There are other violent and dangerous monsters from all over northern climes who have been hunting naughty children for centuries. From shapeshifters to mountain trolls, to elves, to heavy-handed cohorts of Saint Nicholas, the Christmas holiday has been filled with ghosts and monsters ready to dole out punishment to those who need it. The Fright Before Christmas will delve into the folklore of Krampus and his friends with the elf-like tomten and the goblinesque Karakoncolas. The Belsnickel is ready to hit us with his switch of sticks and Gryla may drag you back to her mountain lair. And watch out for the Yule Cat ready to pounce!" Jeff Belanger is one of the most visible and prolific researchers of folklore and legends today. A natural storyteller, he’s the award-winning, Emmy-nominated host, writer, and producer of the New England Legends series on PBS and Amazon Prime, and is the author of over a dozen books (published in six languages). He also hosts the award-winning New England Legends weekly podcast, which has garnered over 4.5 million downloads since its launch, and ranks in the top 1/2 percent of all podcasts as far as popularity according to Listen Notes. His books include the best sellers: The World’s Most Haunted Places, Weird Massachusetts, Our Haunted Lives, The Call of Kilimanjaro, and Who’s Haunting the White House? He founded Ghostvillage.com in 1999—one of the Web’s most popular paranormal destinations—and he’s a noted speaker and media personality. _______________________________________________________________ Talking Strange Paranormal Podcast with Aaron Sagers is a weekly paranormal pop culture show featuring celebrity and author interviews, with a weekly "Small Talk" mini-sode with reader submitted letters and spooky tales. The Exorcist at 50 & Demonic Belief

12/7/2023
Authors Joseph Laycock and Eric Harrelson discuss with host Aaron Sagers their new book The Exorcist Effect: Horror, Religion, and Demonic Belief on the 50th anniversary of the iconic film that changed the horror genre, and impacted belief in demons and possession. On Dec. 26, 1973, The Exorcist — directed by William Friedkin, based on the book by William Peter Blatty — debuted in theaters. Released with low expectations, it became a box office hit, and radically changed the horror genre as serious and realistic. But it also led to a wave of reports of vomiting in theaters, people claiming they themselves were possessed by demons and it became a great recruitment tool for the Catholic Church, and career launch for Ed and Lorraine Warren. In the new book The Exorcist Effect: Horror, Religion, and Demonic Belief, authors Joseph Laycock and Eric Harrelson explore the ongoing relationship between horror movies and Western religious culture, with a focus on the period from 1968 to the modern day through the lens of The Exorcist — as well as Rosemary's Baby, and The Omen — widely believed to be based on a true story. The book outlines a cycle in which religious beliefs and practices become the basis of films — including 2013's The Conjuring — that in turn inspire religious beliefs, practices, and experiences in response. Drawing on psychology, sociology, and folklore studies, the authors theorize how film informs religious experience and shapes religious culture. _______________________________________________________________ Talking Strange Paranormal Podcast with Aaron Sagers is a weekly paranormal pop culture show featuring celebrity and author interviews, with a weekly "Small Talk" mini-sode with reader submitted letters and spooky tales.
