ChatGPT and AI seem to have taken over the news cycle. Apparently, AI can do anything from draw a world-class piece of art to take the bar exam. While those are impressive feats, let's see if it can do something really difficult. We ask ChatGPT to invent new bourbon cocktails that have never been heard of before. Will AI finally crumble under the pressure, or will it yet again prove to be far better than us mere mortals. We make some AI-generated cocktails and see what AI really knows about the human palate. We discuss how bartenders can use AI as a creative tool and maybe learn a thing or two about stepping outside the norm of cocktails. Cocktail 1 - *Bourbon Sage Smash* 2 oz Bourbon 1 oz Fresh lemon juice 1/2 oz Sage syrup* 4-5 Fresh sage leaves 1 Dash orange bitters Sage leaf and lemon twist for garnish - In a shaker, muddle the fresh sage leaves with the sage syrup. - Add the bourbon, fresh lemon juice, orange bitters, and ice to the shaker. - Shake vigorously for about 10-15 seconds. - Strain the cocktail into a rocks glass filled with ice. - Garnish with a fresh sage leaf and a lemon twist * Sage syrup recipe: Combine equal parts water and sugar in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Add several fresh sage leaves and let simmer for 5-10 minutes. Remove from heat, let cool, and strain out the sage leaves. Store the syrup in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week. Cocktail 2 - *Smoky Bourbon Sling* 2 oz Bourbon 1/2 oz Mezcal 3/4 oz Fresh lime juice 1/2 oz Maple syrup 1/4 oz Luxardo Maraschino liqueur 2 dashes Angostura bitters Club soda Lime wedge for garnish - Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. - Add the bourbon, mezcal, lime juice, maple syrup, Luxardo Maraschino liqueur, and Angostura bitters. - Shake well for about 10-15 seconds, until the shaker is chilled. - Fill a Collins glass with ice. - Strain the cocktail into the glass. - Top with club soda. - Garnish with a lime wedge. Matt's attempt to entertain his house guests went better than expected. However, he still has a lot left to learn. In this episode of the "Elevating Your Home Bar" series, Anthony and Troy take Matt to school and help him upgrade his cocktail game. They walk him through their cocktails, an elevated Whiskey Sour and The Bitter Handshake. Stay tuned for the next episode of this series where we learn about and test batched cocktails! ________________________________________ *Elevated Whiskey Sour* 2 oz bourbon 3/4 oz lemon 3/4 oz simple syrup 1 egg white Angostura bitters Add all ingredients less the bitters to a cocktail shaker. Dry shake for 30 seconds. Fill shaker with ice, and shake again for 8-10 seconds. Double strain into a chilled coupe glass. Add four drops of bitters in a dotted line over the top of the drink, and slide a toothpick across to form the shape of an elegant arrow. ________________________________________ *Bitter Handshake* 1 ounce Fernet-Branca 1 ounce Blood Orange Reduction 1 ounce Rye Whiskey Syrup Garnish: thick spiral of orange zest Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass. Add ice and stir until chilled. Strain into a rocks glass over an ice sphere. Garnish with the orange zest atop the ice sphere. Shake and strain into a rocks glass over a large cube. ________________________________________ *The Doctored Cocktail - 'The 3 Sip Charlie'* 3 Dashes of Scrappy's Black Lemon Bitters ¼ oz Strega ¼ oz Nonino Apertivo ½ oz Simple syrup ½ oz Lemon juice ½ oz Boxergrail Rye 1 oz Jack Daniel's Bonded Atomized Absinthe Dehydrated Blood Orange Add all ingredients to a shaker with ice. Shake and double strain into a frozen coupe. Torch a dehydrated blood orange and place on top of drink. Atomize 3-4 sprays of absinthe over the top. Limited release whiskey usually ends up being one of two things: worth it, or an absolute gimmick. It's very rare you find one that is in between that. Here on the pod we have a weird desire to over spend on limited release whiskey and review it for you, so you can save your hard earned dollar. Sometimes it even involves Matt building boats out of his neighbors trees because a bird knocking at his window told him to, so he can travel across the land to overpay for the rarest of bottles. Today's episode is a great example of a limited release that is worth it, and one that is right down the middle. Sometimes, as gimmicky as some whiskey can be, the allure of the process, story, and bottled quantity are enough to make it worthwhile.
