This weeks guest is expert reactive dog trainer, Nick McMechan. Nick grew up near Edinburgh where spent a childhood walking, or being walked by, his own and his neighbours dogs. He graduated from university, and after a number of different jobs ended up in retail. During this time he got into dog training as a hobby, and this led to him competing in working trails with his dogs Lady and Max. Max developed some reactivity issues which forced Nick to learn more about dog behaviour, and eventually qualify as a trainer himself. In January 2019 he took redundancy from Boots, and started his dog walking business, just a few weeks before the pandemic! The subsequent lockdowns and lots of dog owners working from home, meant Nick business was slow to grow. He struggled to get clients and was charging low-prices. He then added training services, again charging low-prices and was working ever longer hours. He started dipping into his savings, which led to the breaking point for his fledgling business. This weeks guest is the amazing Anjie Coats, a groomer extraordinare and acclaimed rabbit grooming specialist. Anjie grew up as an army brat living wherever her dad was stationed. They finally settled in Masschusettes, where she lives now, and she initially studies to be a neurosurgeon, and for some pocket money she worked part time in a grooming salon. Anjie progressed well through college achieving good grades, she had a sponsor and everything was on track, until aged 18 she got run over by a garbage truck and had her arm ripped off. Five years of surgery later (dying six times in the process) the doctors got her arm as good as it was going to get, Anjie began an 11 year career in law enforcement, and she still kept the grooming going after work, but then burn-out caused her to go full-time with dog grooming aged 32. From there she moved from dogs to grooming cats, rabbits, chinchillas, ferrets and even yoga loving guinea pigs! This week I'm talking to the amazing River Lee who runs the Savvy Groomer, a coaching business that helps groomers go from burnt out, broke and broken to healthy, wealthy and happy. River grew up in Rhode Island, where she struggled at school where and felt like an outsider. Being neurodivergent and dyslexic meant she struggled in a traditional learning environment. However, she always had an entrepreneurial spirit and actually ran a small pet sitting company when she just 12 years old! She did a number of jobs, graduated, and ended up managing a doggy daycare full-time at the same time as she was training to be a vet. She ended up training to be a groomer purely as a back-up to cover the work-shy groomer who was enployed at the daycare. At this point she was involved in a massive car accident, fell pregnant, lost her apartment, and the daycare she was working in said they would prefer it if she left, so River ended up homeless, living in her car, with no job. Unbelievably, she knew someone who was looking to get out of a grooming lease, which River took over, and ended up opening her first grooming business four days before her son was born. She survived on ketchup sandwhiches, while her son was being washed in the bath at the salon, where they were living illegally! But, when the chips were down River showed an unbelievable determination to build a better life. And, if you think that is amazing, then you'll love hearing how River turned her life around, to become not only a successful business owner, but an inspirational leader in the grooming industry.
