20. Doctor Who - David Tennant (2005-2009)

11/22/2023
It was only a year into the Doctor Who revival of 2005 that David Tennant took over as the titular Time Lord. Would the show survive changing its lead so soon when it had barely found its feet? Four years later, we scarcely had to wonder, as arguably the most popular incarnation of the new era (and possibly all time) said goodbye. (Well, technically he said "I don't want to go", but still...) With David Tennant set to return, albeit briefly, as the 14th Doctor in 2023's three-part 60th anniversary special, Vinnk and Sean look back at his original, trail-blazing run that began 18 years ago on Christmas Day, and preview what's to come as he dons his trademark Converse once more. Starring: * David Tennant - The Doctor * Billie Piper - Rose Tyler * John Barrowman - Captain Jack Harkness * Freema Agyeman - Dr. Martha Jones * Derek Jacobi - Professor Yana * John Simm - The Master * Catherine Tate - Donna Noble Available on Max. Upload - Season 1 (2020)

10/12/2023
In the near future of 2033, Nathan is working on a free version of the software that runs the digital afterlife, only to be uploaded to one of the poshest versions around after his self-driving care malfunctions and crashes. Nora is an "Angel" who works at Lakeview, in charge of Nathan's comfort and digital appearance in his forever-after. Sparks fly! And we're not talking about the crashed car. As a relative investigates the circumstances about Nathan's death, Nora discovers that some of Nathan's memories are corrupted. Could it be that Nathan was murdered for his altruistic work? Vinnk and Sean review one of the most inventive and prescient series of the modern day on the eve of the end of the WGA strike. A world where everyone's lives and even now their afterlife has been commoditized by ever-merging corporations like Nokia Taco Bell and Panera Facebook, nearly every issue from 3D body scanning to AI to cutting corners on scripting comes to bear in the fiction of one of the most clever written shows on television. And somehow it was renewed for not one buy two seasons, the latest one premiering on October 20th, 2023! Starring: * Robbie Amell - Nathan Brown * Andy Allo - Nora Antony * Allegra Edwards - Ingrid Kannerman * Zainab Johnson - Aleesha * Kevin Bigley - Luke * Owen Daniels - AI Guy * Andrea Rosen - Lucy * William B. Schmigadoon! - Season 2 (2023)

7/20/2023
You can't go back to Schmigadoon. So when Josh and Mel find out that their happy ending got them stuck in a rut, they wind up in the land of Schmicago, but populated with a lot of familiar faces, and -- if you're a music fan -- familiar leitmotifs. For the first time ever, Vinnk and Sean review a new season of a show that was previously reviewed on the podcast. How does Schmigadoon's sophomore outing stack up against the original, a show that wasn't even called "season 1" when it came out? And will we ever review another follow-up season of a show again? Starring: * Keegan-Michael Key - Josh Skinner * Cecily Strong - Melissa Gimble * Dove Cameron - Jenny Banks * Aaron Tveit - Topher * Jane Krakowski - Bobbie Flanagan * Kristin Chenoweth - Miss Codwell * Alan Cumming - Dooley Blight * Ann Harada - Madame Frau * Jaime Camil - Sergeant Rivera * Ariana DeBose - Emcee Available on Apple TV+. The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)

5/4/2023
When The Super Mario Bros. Movie was first announced with scant details except an all-star cast, rumors ran wild. Will they try live action again, or is it animated? Will they try one of the many recent video game plots, or will this be an all-new story? Is this a complete and utter financial folly, with $300 million in development and promotion? Vinnk and Sean review the highest-grossing film of 2023, and (so far) the 19th top grossing film of all time, point out every visual and audio Easter egg they could find, and actually share some criticisms of a Nintendo product! Gasp! Starring: * Chris Pratt - Mario * Charlie Day - Luigi * Anya Taylor-Joy - Princess Peach * Jack Black - Bowser, King of the Koopas * Keegan-Michael Key - Toad * Seth Rogen - Donkey Kong * Fred Armisen - Cranky Kong Available in theaters. How Russel T Davies saved Doctor Who

1/26/2023
Doctor Who tried to come back in the '90s, but it didn't take. Christopher Eccleston's short 13-episode run re-ignited the show into a new cultural powerhouse, which also spawned two concurrent spin-off series. Vinnk and Sean, along with guest host Miles (from sister podcast Casual Trek) examine what made the 2005 relaunch successful, areas where Davies wasn't so strong, and some of what we can look forward to (or are dreading) when he returns as Doctor Who showrunner in 2023. Starring: * Christopher Eccleston - The Doctor * Billie Piper - Rose Tyler * John Barrowman - Captain Jack Harkness * Noel Clarke - Mickey Smith * Camille Coduri - Jackie Tyler Available on HBO Max (for now), Amazon, BritBox, and Disney+ (eventually). Doctor Who - Christopher Eccleston (2005)

1/5/2023
When Doctor Who relaunched in 2005 on the BBC after a failed (but serviceable) Fox US movie/pilot barely a decade earlier, many of us didn't know what to expect. We didn't expect Christopher Eccleston, and we certainly didn't expect Russel T Davies and his eccentric touch, but both rocketed the franchise into a new golden age the likes of which could only have been imagined by fans of the classic series. Vinnk and Sean, along with guest host Miles (from sister podcast Casual Trek) relive the reboot, ostensibly without the benefit of rose-colored glasses, and not at all influenced by RTD's return to the remade franchise nearly two decades later in 2023. Starring: * Christopher Eccleston - The Doctor * Billie Piper - Rose Tyler * John Barrowman - Captain Jack Harkness * Noel Clarke - Mickey Smith * Camille Coduri - Jackie Tyler Available on HBO Max (for now), Amazon, BritBox, and Disney+ (eventually). Cobra Kai - Season 1 (2018) and 2 (2019)

12/15/2022
Johnny Lawrence is long past his glory days, estranged from his son and mother of his child. That is, until he encounters a kid who needs help. Fortunately, Johnny is still bad-ass, and beats up a bunch of minors Miyagi-style. Miguel Diaz becomes the first student of the new Cobra Kai dojo, where Johnny teaches him how to deal with the bullies from West Valley High. Miguel has eyes for Sam, daughter of Johnny's long-time rival and successful auto dealer Daniel LaRusso, who is not very happy about the return of his childhood arch-nemesis, and goes to ridiculous lengths to stop him. Vinnk and Sean catch up on the first two of (so far) five seasons of the Netflix hit show, through the latest incarnation of the All Valley Karate Tournament, the return of Johnn'y sensei John Kreese (now twice presumed dead), and the rise of Daniels rival dojo Miyagi-do. Of course, it wasn't always on Netflix; Cobra Kai began life as the flagship show of the new YouTube Red streaming service for original programming. YouTube Red shuttered, but Netflix stepped in to save Cobra Kai, which truly never dies. Starring: * Ralph Macchio - Daniel LaRusso * William "Billy" Zabka - Johhny Lawrence * Courtney Henggeler - Amanda LaRusso * Marin Kove - John Kreese * Xolo Mariduena - Miguel Diaz * Mary Mouser - Samantha "Sam" LaRusso * Jacob Bertrand - Eli "Hawk" Moskowitz * Peyton List - Tory Nichols Available on Netflix. DojoCast Episode 178: Video Game TV Shows

11/10/2022
Originally Broadcast 2022/11/04: Originally released 2022/11/04 on the Famicom Dojo Video Game Podcast feed! Since it's (mostly) about TV shows, and a game that's really an interactive movie, we thought the episode would do just as well on this podcast. We've talked before about movies based on video games, and video games based on movies (sometimes themselves based on video games; looking at you, Street Fighter: The Movie The Game!), but have we talked about TV shows inspired by video games? Vinnk and Sean react to the Mario movie trailer, talk about the video game cartoons of their childhood, and how the genre has grown to include more mature and live action fare in the modern era -- including shows that have been announced but haven't even been released yet! But also certainly shows that have, and what is lost (or potentially gained) in translation. In Pile of Shame, Vinnk figures he should finally get in on this Minecraft thing all the kids are playing, and Sean describes his experience with the interactive movie game "I Saw Black Clouds" in Future Retro. Gravity Falls (2012-2016)

10/13/2022
Welcome to Gravity Falls, a sleepy Oregon woodland, backwater town with its own kitschy roadside, supernatural attractions... that are totally real. Dipper and Mabel Pines spend an adventure-packed summer with their great uncle "Grunkle" Stan trying to uncover the mysteries of the town, and just who wrote the mysterious journals chronicling all of the strange goings-on. Vinnk has been waiting for Sean to watch this show since we started this podcast, and we review both seasons and the series of shorts that separated them, as well as reveal the many hidden secrets that Alex Hirsch added to the show to keep the guessing game going as to what "really" has been going on in Gravity Falls this whole time, and just how it will end. (Which we don't spoil, because we're not monsters!) Remember, reality is an illusion. Buy gold! Starring: * Jason Ritter - Dipper Pines * Kristen Schaal - Mabel Pines * Alex Hirsch - Grunkle Stan * Linda Cardellini - Wendy Corduroy * Thurop Van Orman - Li'l Gideon * Carl Farulo - Grenda * Niki Yang - Candy Chiu * Dee Bradley Baker - Waddles * Kevin Michael Richardson - Sheriff Blubs * Jennifer Coolidge - Lazy Susan * Gregg Turkington - Toby Determined * Will Forte - Tyler the Cute Biker Available on Disney+. Severance - Season 1 (2022)

9/29/2022
Lumon Industries has developed a technology to protect its business secrets by severing the minds of some of its employees between their work and home lives. The "outie" only needs to commute to and from work, never experiencing in-office life, and having no idea what they do every date. Their "innie", in contrast, is effectively born the basement of the office building, and from their perspective never gets to leave. Workplace culture is replaced by an a religious reverence for the company's founders. But what is it the severed employees do all day? When one of Mark Scout's co-workers finds him on the outside, the walls between the two halves of his life begin to come down. Vinnk and Sean try to figure out how a TV show starring Adam Scott, John Turturro, and Christopher Walken, directed by Ben Stiller could as tense, sweet, and thought-provoking as this one that also somehow lampoons the more inane aspects of white collar office culture. We wonder other characters are severed, discuss the "color theory" that may lead to some clues, and wonder what the heck is up with the goats. (But, also, Dylan is the GOAT.) Starring: * Adam Scott - Mark S(cout) * Britt Lower - Helly R * John Turturro - Irving B * Zach Cherry - Dylan G * Patrica Arquette - Harmony Cobel / Mrs. Selvig * Tramell Tillman - Mr. Milchick * Jen Tullock - Devon * Michael Chernus - Ricken * Christopher Walken - Burt G * Dichen Lachman - Ms. Casey Available on Apple TV+. Star Trek: The Original Series - Season 1 (1966)

9/15/2022
In the wake of the modern day Star Trek explosion, and especially Strange New Worlds featuring the crew of Captain Christopher Pike, it only seemed appropriate to journey back five decades to where it all began to compare and contrast without the rose colored glasses. Vinnk and Sean discuss how Star Trek got its second chance with its new pilot, Where No Man Has Gone Before, comment on the costume and character changes that happened slowly (or sometimes very quickly), and review some classic episodes from its amazing 30 episode first season run. And, of course, we compare it to Treks both legacy and modern. Starring: * William Shatner - Captain James T Kirk * Leonard Nimoy - Mr. Spock * DeForest Kelly - Dr. Leonard McCoy * James Doohan - Scotty * George Takei - Sulu * Nichelle Nichols - Lt. Teen Titans GO! (2013)

8/25/2022
Sometimes a superhero show comes along that is so beloved, the only thing left to do is make another version of that same show and Seinfeld-ify it to make it about "nothing", but with superheroes. Vinnk and Sean trod over as much of this not-a-sequel cartoon as the are able to find in this online streaming hellscape, and how pointless it is to criticize showrunners who will gladly drink your tears. We run down our favorite episodes, explain the in-jokes as best we can, and go off on a wild tangent about our fond memories of Adult Swim which clearly presaged this epic work. Starring: * Greg Cipes - Beast Boy * Scott Menville - Robin * Khary Payton - Cyborg * Hynden Walch - Starfire * Tara Strong - Raven * Ricky Jay - Narrator Available on Cartoon Network. Good Omens - Season 1 (2019)

2/24/2022
When the Angel Aziraphale first meets the demon Crowley (then Crowley) outside the Garden of Eden, an unlikely friendship forms that spans the next six thousand years. The coming of the Anti-Christ, and the march of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, threaten to unmake the Earth and everyone on it. This unlikely pair have only seven days to prevent it. Vinnk and Sean talk about the first season of the show based on a Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman book, which then goes far off book, and will eventually see a second season. But this season, it's all about what drives the narrative, and how the narrative is utterly overshadowed by its main characters. Starring: * Frances McDormand - God (voice) * David Tennant - Crowley (Demon) * Michael Sheen - Aziraphale (Angel) * Sam Taylor Buck - Adam Young (Anti-Christ?) * John Hamm - Gabriel (Angel) * Adira Arjona - Anathema Device (Witch) * Jack Whitehall - Newton Pulsifer (Witchfinder) * Michael McKean - Shadwell (Scottish) Available on Amazon Prime Video. Acapulco - Season 1 (2021)

1/27/2022
Today, Maximo is a wealthy multi-billionaire who owns scores of companies across the globe, but in 1984 he was a poor kid who lived near the Las Colinas resort in Acapulco, Mexico, who dreamed of one day having a job at the resort like his hero Don Pablo. Maximo tells the story of this transformation as a birthday present to his nephew Hugo, who is also starting to come of age, humorously embellishing the retelling, and occasionally forgetting the names of some of the figures from his past. Vinnk and Sean compare this show relentlessly to movies and shows past with similar plot framing, where it excels and where it may fall short of its predecessors, but mostly we really want to you watch it so it gets a second season in 2022. Starring: * Eugenio Derbez - Máximo Gallardo * Raphael Alejandro - Hugo * Enrique Arrizon - Young Máximo * Fernando Carsa - Memo * Camila Perez - Julia * Regina Reynoso - Sara * Jessica Collins - Diane * Chord Overstreet - Chad * Damián Alcázar - Don Pablo Available on Apple TV+. Quantum Leap - Season 1 (1989)

12/23/2021
Some time in the near future of the 1990s, Dr. Sam Beckett prematurely entered the Quantum Leap accelerator himself to prove that his theory of a finite but expanding universe allowing one to time travel within their own lifetime. His theories were correct, but with the side-effect that he trades places with someone from the past, with everyone believing he's the person he has "leapt" into. He also no longer has a full recall of the details of his own life. Fortunately, the project is able to maintain contact with Sam through time by tuning into his brain waves, allowing his friend and mentor Al to appear to Sam as a hologram wherever and whenever he finds himself. Through Al, Sam can use the resources of the project, and their diva of a computer Ziggy, to help fix the lives of those who suffered in the past, and grant Sam the ability to "leap" into another life, and hopefully, one day, back home. Vinnk and Sean review the pilot, memories of the first season, how the show shaped them as impressionable young men, and go off into tangents about later seasons before reigning it back in, although (WARNING!) the end of the podcast contains spoilers about the series finale, which we have marked appropriately.
