Cam Scorey suggested that I talk to Brett Partridge since he's another Aussie detailer. Meeting Brett for the first time he told me of starting detailing as a side Hussle. His 9-5 was working in the mines in Australia and when word came around of layoffs, Brett decided to make the jump to detailing full time. 4yrs later and he hasn't looked back staying booked out Brett eventually hired a worker to help him keep up. Brett is in a small town but is lucky enough to have clients coming from as far as 3hrs away to have them work on their cars and trucks. He loves classic muscle cars and does a fair amount of them. Matthew Goode started working on cars at an early age in his dad's body shop. He helped his dad with different tasks from sanding to painting and even detailing. Eventually Matthew's wife told him to make the jump and start his own detail shop, so with no money Matthew made a difficult decision. Overcoming a sever leg injury that to this day bothers him and is so bad he'll one day have to remove it; Matthew has grown his detail business. Matthew has gotten to the point where he can pretty much just work on correction and coatings with some ppf jobs. His wife handles the scheduling and the details for the business and together they make a great team. Nate Mcclain started working on cars with his dad when he was 5. Eventually when he turned 15 and bought his first car he took pride in cleaning it. This like a lot of us leads to washing friends and family members cars for some side cash. Nate dabbled a little in the Ag machinery market before finding a love for doing Marine crafts. It seems like with everything else in the detail industry that the training market is becoming over saturated. Obviously you have the respected training brands, then there's the detailers no one's ever heard of doing trainings and the guys that are out of touch and their training techniques might not apply anymore. Grant Menard is someone I've been surprised we've never met. We know a lot of the same people and have been to a the same events, but never have crossed paths. I was excited to finally have him on the show and to get to finally meet him. Grant started detailing in his garage as a part time gig during school. After graduating Penn St. he went into the Pharma industry and there he learned the importance of networking. At a seminar in San Francisco he realized it really wasn't what he wanted anymore. He missed the passion he had from detailing as a business. Grant started what we know today as Menard Premium Detailing and used what he learned in Pharma sales to grow his detailing business. It's been a while since Esme was last on and I never knew the audio quality was so bad. I reached out to her every so often asking her to come back on and she always said "Yes", but scheduling was tough. Angela Gilham started her detail career in the body shop and after some time away for school, took a job as a boat detailer. After working for a few people she realized she could do it on her own and made the leap to starting her own business. Angela has made a name for her self in her field and has worked on many boats ranging from 40+ footers to 180 foot yachts. Jerry Grant was a Master Plumber when he started detailing parttime for some extra Christmas cash. After a few months of booking his nights and weekends, he decided to make the jump to fulltime. With the support of his family and friends Jerry dove headfirst into detailing and learning wherever he could. Jonathan Michael Monson may seem like he's come out of nowhere, but the truth is he worked hard to grow his business. After a nagging back injury Jonathan had to start scaling his business adding help to get jobs done. With adding help meant he needed more jobs to cover an employee. So, he dove back into his old marketing habits from when he was a GM for a tire chain. Placing the right ads on social media, Jonathan saw new way to market his business. Making "How to" videos and showing what exactly they did in the shop his social media has grown exponentially, and has even added some extra income to the bottom line. Jonathan is a giving person at heart and what he does with that money is give back to the community. For the last few years Jonathan has raised large sums of donations for the local food banks in his town. He even goes so far as to dress up like Santa Claus to help at the food banks. I see a lot of people in the detail industry talking about being "Mentors" or offering their services to mentor new or up and coming detailers. The problem I have with this is what makes them qualified to mentor someone who's starting out or looking for advice? I've had people before ask me to help them and my reply is usually "No" not because I don't want to, but because I'm a trainwreck too. That's why building a mentorship network is important to me.
