Education On Fire - Sharing creative and inspiring learning in our schools

Education Podcasts

Do you feel the education system is sucking the life out of you and the pupils you serve? I think many of us wish we could click our fingers and make it fit for purpose. A place of growth with shared learning that empowers pupils to be their best selves, so they can create a world they want to inhabit now and in the future. While a magic wand or a visionary politician might sound like the answer I believe change is already happening. Educators are changing futures one conversation at a time. New technology and the environments where we learn are beginning to look different both in and out of the classroom. I hope you are seeing this first hand and are excited about what you can share with your pupils. We are having conversations, sharing organisations and communities that are supporting education in a way that you may have not experienced. Educational change will come from us all working in way that supports the best interests of each of our pupils, personalised learning. Governments and policy makers will follow when they see fully how it can be different. So let us teach, coach, mentor and create an environment that fuels every child with feedback, inspiration, resilience and empowerment. The Education on Fire community is shining the torch, so no matter where you are in the world or how you are supporting children this podcast is here for you. ‘Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.’

A noted speaker who is listed in Outstanding Teachers in Exceptional Education, Who’s Who in American Education and Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, Dr. Joe has spent the past thirty years training tens of thousands of teachers, parents, and administrators across the nation on how to meet the unique needs of students with chronic reading failure – nonreaders included. Dr. Joe has been featured on the PBS NewsHour and mentioned on national radio shows such as: Tom Joyner, Dr. Laura, Mike Gallegher and Michael Medvid. Dr. Lockavitch holds a Doctor of Education from Boston University and a Master of Science in Special Education from Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, Connecticut. He is currently the President of Failure Free Reading - an educational publishing and software development firm housed in Concord North Carolina. Failure Free Reading which has over two million hours of direct student instruction – both inperson and through distance learning – has been used by thousands of teachers to serve tens of thousands of students in schools across the nation. His current client list includes New York City, Washington DC, Broward County, Florida, Niagara Falls, NY, Laredo, Tx, Bristol, TN and many more. For over 30 years, Dr. Joe has been helping school districts and parents across the nation turn their nonreaders into readers - quickly, easily and within budget. Dr. Joe specializes in training teachers, parents, and volunteers in accelerating the vocabulary, comprehension, expressive fluency, and confidence of chronically failing students of all ages. Dr. Joe’s philosophy is quite simple: we are underestimating the reading potential of chronically failing students. The enemy is not the student, parent, teacher, or administrator. The real enemy is the instructional approach and accompanying materials. Change that approach and you will change the performance outcomes. 390: Setting and Scoring Financial Goals with Pete Huryk

4/7/2024
Setting and Scoring Financial Goals is a basic guide for any soccer fan who wants to understand personal finance better. The consistent sports metaphor explains intimidating concepts such as "small cap stocks" with ease for anyone who understands "the beautiful game." Although it may seem complex, finance is simply a game like any other with players, strategies, and results. In order to win the game, it's necessary first to understand it and this book is a great first step! Fill Your Boots was Pete Huryk’s first book. Intended for high school-age soccer players, it is filled with life lessons that overlap with the game of soccer. The book can be read as a whole or read section by section depending on the needs of the individual. In his sophomore work, Soccer Life Balance, Pete took a more methodical approach to individual achievement. Using facets of the game as metaphors for different aspects of life and their systematic improvement, Soccer Life Balance is a resource manual for taking steps toward being a better version of one’s self. 384: A new innovation to support your college searching journey with Troove

2/25/2024
Dave has lived and worked around the world, and is now based in Burlington Vermont with his wife and two Golden Retrievers. Their 3 “kids” have now graduated from college, but it was his experience with them on their college journeys that started his innovator’s brain cranking on what became Troove. Having worked in admissions through grad school, he was amazed by how little technology and the internet had impacted the college search and admissions process. And even more, he was dismayed to discover how often students were transferring or dropping out altogether. In early 2020, this led directly to his founding Troove, a 2-sided, AI powered platform to help students discover their passions, people, and place based on the real experiences of recent alumni and current higher education students. Dave Hurwitt is an innovator. Over the course of his career, he’s led the development and launch of new products and services – from toothpicks to wind turbines – that have generated well over $1 billion in sales. If you have a large, front loading washing machine in your house, that was Dave and his team at Whirlpool. They re-envisioned the traditional, small European washer for the US market and took front loaders from 1% of the market to over 50% today, saving billions of dollars in electricity and water consumption in the process. 381: Teachers with Boundaries - Gemma Drinkall

2/4/2024
Gemma is an educational wellbeing coach, trainer and supervisor with the ambition to transform middle leaders’ quality of life for the betterment of themselves, their students and their team. With over 9 years’ experience working in the education sector as a classroom teacher, head of year and co-head of department, Gemma is well-versed in the challenges and daily grind that teachers face just to survive. The switch from career-obsessed teacher to qualified coach, trainer and supervisor is the source of Gemma’s superpowers. Having experienced panic attacks, low mood and anxiety, she crashed and burned out of her teaching career. She brings these personal experiences to her work, making it her mission to help other middle leaders avoid the same fate and instead, create clear boundaries so that they can switch off from teaching and switch on in their lives. Gemma is the host of the popular “Teachers with Boundaries Podcast”, which shares tips and advice for teachers on how they can switch off from teaching, reduce the overwhelm and guilt, and increase their time, energy and happiness. This support continues in Gemma’s Facebook community, Teachers with Boundaries. Post teaching, Gemma is still discovering the novel and enjoyable concept that is “free time”. During hers, she can often be found with her head in a book, enjoying the outdoors or daydreaming about adventures in her future campervan. 378: The Kid Across the Hall with Reid Saaris

1/14/2024
Reid’s story begins at his own high school, where his life began to diverge from that of his best friend Jamie as soon as he enrolled in advanced classes across the hall. After graduation, the gap widened as Reid pursued an elite degree studying educational opportunity in America. In an attempt to close the opportunity gap between students like him and Jamie, Reid took a job as a teacher at Battery Creek High, a severely under-resourced school in South Carolina where students were flunking out of their classes not because they were incapable, but because the coursework was too easy. Reid and a team of teachers and students rallied to increase enrollment in the advanced track for those who didn’t fit the honor student mold. In one year, the program doubled to become the largest provider in the state, and performance on the college-level tests increased by 20%. Wanting to effect change on a larger scale, Reid founded Equal Opportunity Schools (EOS) to find and help students all over the country who have been overlooked, discouraged, or are otherwise missing from higher-level learning opportunities. Backed by new research and original survey data of millions of teachers and students across the country, his forthcoming book THE KID ACROSS THE HALL: The Fight for Opportunity in Our Schools (Redwood Press/Stanford University Press; September 5) vividly chronicles Reid’s triumphs, setbacks, and insights as he learned firsthand that the hard task of educational reform will take much more than the Hollywood myth of the well-intentioned teacher who saves the day. 377: The London Interdisciplinary School with Prof Carl Gombrich

1/7/2024
LIS is building a new university based on interdisciplinarity and tackling complex real-world problems. Instead of specialising in a single subject area, our students learn through a problem-based interdisciplinary approach, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences (BASc). Solutions to the world's most complex and interconnected problems won't come from a single specialism or subject. We need to bring together experts and knowledge from across the arts, sciences and humanities. In a world faced by increasingly complex challenges, it’s never been more important to find new ways of learning. We need young people who are more versatile, more entrepreneurial, and more resilient than ever before. But the current education system is siloed, and students are forced down a singular academic path, pushing them to specialise in one subject area. At LIS, we think there’s a straightforward case for an interdisciplinary curriculum: problems are interdisciplinary, so our curriculum should be too. The London Interdisciplinary School place a premium on teaching rather than research. They have brought together a diverse and outstanding group of academics, entrepreneurs, and educationalists. The LIS team includes philosophers, epidemiologists, artists, journalists, behavioural scientists, and mathematicians, as well as entrepreneurs and professionals.
