Hope for Europe: The State of AI Talent Report

5/1/2024
Zeki's insights are purely data-driven, based on a carefully curated dataset that brings together unique technologies and data to provide insights into 140,000 of the world's top AI scientists and engineers, all with advanced skills and expertise, most of whom are at the early stages of their careers. The market for top AI talent is diversifying and deepening. Large companies hire five times more top AI scientists and engineers than the Big Five (Amazon, Apple, Google, Meta, Microsoft). New national AI champions are emerging outside the US. The healthcare sector, particularly in Europe, has attracted twenty times more top AI talent over the past 10 years. The global market is also shifting away from the strong dominance of the US. National champions are emerging in some major economies, anchoring talent in their own countries. The characteristics of the best AI talent who choose to go abroad or stay close to home. There are consistent global trends that emerge early in the careers of top AI talent. Thanks for listening. Beckhoff launches an AutoML tool

4/21/2024
Fabian Bause was actually very sceptical at our AI in the Forest event, which was all about AutoML. Then he called us a few weeks ago and we were surprised. Beckhoff offers its customers and also non-Beckhoff users an AutoML tool. The automation company is thus breaking new ground. Has he changed his mind? And if so, why? Fabian explains it to us.

Silo AI: Why Körber, Philips or Unilever work with them?

4/10/2024
Silo AI and TurkuNLP are developing a family of multilingual open source LLMs with the aim of strengthening Europe's digital sovereignty and democratising access to LLMs. Developing baseline models that are in line with European values is crucial to this effort to ensure that they are based on data and information that accurately represents the different languages, citizens, organisations and cultural landscape of the European Union. This approach is not only in line with European values, but also enables sovereignty over how downstream applications and value are created. The success was attributed to the combination of the low-resource Finnish language with resource-rich languages. The team worked to determine the optimal frequency of data reuse for low-resource languages during training, and integrated translated text pairs from English and Finnish. This strategy, which relies on a cross-linguistic signal to improve the model's understanding of the relationships between the languages, proved crucial in achieving excellent performance in the low-resource languages without compromising performance in English.

Timeseries Data: Deploy the model in the database

4/3/2024
AINode is the third internal node after ConfigNode and DataNode in Apache IoTDB. This node extends the capability of IoTDB to perform machine learning analysis on time series data by interacting with the DataNode and ConfigNode clusters. AINode allows the integration of existing machine learning models by registering them and executing time series analysis tasks through simple SQL statements on specified time series data. This seamlessly combines model creation, management, and inference within the database engine. The framework currently supports common machine learning algorithms or proprietary models for typical time series analysis scenarios like time series prediction and anomaly detection.

Mann+Hummel: Rules for the AI copilot

3/6/2024
Jens Wonneberger is the CISO of automotive supplier Mann+Hummel. He explains to us what rules the company has set itself when it comes to GenAI and LLMs. Jens Wonneberger is a big AI advocate, but we've never had a CISO on the Industrial AI Podcast. But the Mann+Hummel rules can certainly help other companies too. In the news section, we talk about BCW24 and one of the highlights was the announcement that Landing AI is a new partner of the crtlX ecosystem. But we also talk about Harting's Industrial Ethernet Week and ask ourselves: Are models ultimately a commodity?

Brandstetter: A foundation model for simulation

2/28/2024
Johannes Brandstetter is leading a group “AI for data-driven simulations” at the Institute for Machine Learning at the Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz. Additionally, he is a Head of Research (AI4Simulation) at NXAI - the new European AI hub in Linz (Austria). Quote: I am firmly convinced that AI is on the cusp of disrupting simulations at industry-scale. Every day thousands and thousands of compute hours are spent on turbulence modeling, simulations of fluid or air flows, heat transfer in materials, traffic flows, and many more. Many of these processes follow similar underlying patterns, but yet need different and extremely specialized software to simulate. Even worse, for different parameter settings the costly simulations need to be run at full length from scratch. Thanks for listening. Siemens Energy: How to decrease simulations computing days down to minutes.

2/21/2024
We are starting a small simulation special. Last week it was all about batteries. This week the focus is on gas turbines by Siemens Energy. Behnam Nouri is the AI expert at Siemens Energy. He talks to Peter Seeberg about the simulation of gas turbines and explains how he and his team were able to reduce the calculation time for simulations using machine learning. Peter is traveling with an unreliable Internet connection. So the news part is a bit shorter. Robert Weber talks about Sora and what the new genAI model means for the engineering process. Newsflash: Pierer invests Millions in Hochreiter‘s XLSTM

2/4/2024
As things stand today: "We have to scale. We first test on small data sets, then on medium-sized sets and finally on the very large sets," explains Hochreiter. The XLSTM technology performs "very well" on the small and medium-sized data sets. You have to beat all models on the market, says Linz. Over 1,000 GPUs around the world are currently computing the development from Upper Austria. The time horizon is ambitious: The tests on the smaller and medium-sized data sets should be completed by the end of March. "The large data sets will then take centre stage in June," explains Albert Ortig, Managing Director of NXAI. Thanks for listening.
