The Handmaid's Tale Character Analysis: Aunt Lydia

4/9/2024
Today we drop the latest episode of our character analysis series. On this episode, we’ll be discussing Aunt Lydia, one of the most…unique characters in The Handmaid’s Tale television show on Hulu, played by the incredible Ann Dowd. We were first introduced to Lydia in the very first episode of Season 1 as the terrifying “Aunt” who had Janine’s eye removed at the first sign of an attitude from her. That made quite the first impression and she has continued to make many more memorable impressions as the show has continued through Season 5 so far. Eventually though, eccentric as it was, in some ways her repetitive behavior allowed both June and the audience to get a little bit of a handle on her motivations. In this episode we discuss those in depth. While we endeavored not to discuss The Testaments plot for the sake of those who haven’t read it, we have read it, and there are inevitable implications for her future in our discussion - so please don’t listen to this episode if you don’t want any of those! Whether you agree or disagree with our discussion, come find us on social media and share YOUR thoughts! We’d love to hear them and we post new content weekly while we wait for Season 6. So come find us on Instagram and Twitter….err X! And come back in another month or so for our next episode analysis - on one Luke Bankhole.

The Handmaid's Tale - Character Analysis: Joseph Lawrence

2/16/2024
Today we drop the fourth episode of our character analysis series. On this episode, we’ll be discussing the complicated and painfully pragmatic Commander Joseph Lawrence on The Handmaid’s Tale on Hulu, played by one of our absolute favorite actors, Bradley Whitford. Though they’re both hilarious, Bradley’s performance is all the more astonishing when you realize in what extreme opposite realms Whitford’s own politics and persona exist from Commander Lawrence’s, despite Bradley embodying him to absolute perfection on screen. Lawrence’s inclusion in the show came late in Season 2, but delivered a dose of eccentricity and levity that we hadn’t even realized we so desperately needed. And he’s continued to deliver that throughout the end of Season 5, keeping us laughing at his sarcastic quips despite the trauma of Gilead’s hellscape surrounding them. Join us as we discuss how Lawrence has kept us on our toes since the moment he bounded down those stairs, question his ultimate loyalties and examine his deepening relationships with all of the characters on The Handmaid’s Tale on Hulu. Whether you agree or disagree with our discussion, come find us on social media and share YOUR thoughts! We’d love to hear them and we post new content daily while we wait the long wait for Season 6. So come find us on Instagram and Twitter….err X! And check back soon for our next episode analysis - on another extraordinarily complicated character - Aunt Lydia!

The Handmaid's Tale - Character Analysis: Serena Joy Waterford

11/10/2023
Today we drop the third episode of our character analysis series. On this episode, we’ll be discussing the beautiful and complicated (or is she?) Serena Joy Waterford on The Handmaid’s Tale television show on Hulu. The show has given us so much of Serena’s story over its 5 seasons, including flashbacks from before Gilead, and even how Serena might act if given the option of a free life in Canada. We really enjoyed discussing it all, as well as the many different favorable and unfavorable traits of her character. Whether you agree or disagree with our discussion, come find us on social media and share YOUR thoughts! We’d love to hear them and we post new content daily while we wait the long wait for Season 6. So come find us on Instagram and Twitter….err X! And come back in early January for our next episode analysis - on another fan favorite, Commander Joseph Lawrence! In the meantime, enjoy the holiday season, and if you find yourself bored, we’ll be discussing A Murder at the End of the World on our non-Handmaids podcast, “Above the Garage TV Podcast,” wherever you listen to podcasts! It’s the lil icon with us watching tv on a couch.

The Handmaid's Tale - Character Analysis: Nick Blaine

10/20/2023
Today we drop the second episode of our character analysis series. On this episode, we’ll be discussing Nicholas Blaine, a controversial character to many but one of our favorites on The Handmaid’s Tale television show on Hulu. We got to know Nick as a driver for the Waterford’s long before he was promoted to Commander in Season 3 - and to us he’s primarily June’s friend, lover, and father to their baby Holly/Nichole. There are a lot of complications the show has thrown at him, attempting to prevent him from focusing on those roles that are most important to him, but his heart at least never seems to falter from its ride or die love for June. Listen to our thoughts on these complications, his motivations by season, and all the aspects of this broody romantic in this episode. Whether you agree or disagree with our discussion, come find us on social media and share YOUR thoughts! We’d love to hear them and we post new content daily while we wait the long wait for Season 6. So come find us on Instagram and Twitter….err X! And come back in THREE weeks for our next episode analysis - on one Serena Joy Waterford.

The Handmaid's Tale - Character Analysis: June Osborne

10/6/2023
Today we’re dropping our first episode of our new character analysis series! And we’re kicking it off with who else but our badass leading lady, June Osborne. June Osborne is about a million things - wife, lover, mother, murderer, victim, rebel… the list could go on forever - like our episode - but we’ve cut it down to an hour and a half of in depth conversation on the many facets of June’s personality and we really hope you enjoy our thoughts. Whether you agree or disagree with our discussion, come find us on social media and share YOUR thoughts! We’d love to hear them and we post new content daily while we wait the long wait for Season 6. So come find us on Instagram and Twitter….err X! And come back in two weeks for our next episode analysis - on one Nicholas Blaine. He’s from Michigan.

The Testaments Discussion Part Two

9/22/2023
Today we’re discussing The Testaments, Margaret Atwood’s sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale. Atwood published The Testaments in 2019 to immediate critical acclaim, winning the 2019 Booker Prize, and Best Fiction Novel in the Goodreads Choice Awards. The story uses three familiar female narrators to tell the tale of the future of Gilead, with the brunt of the events being set 15 years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale. In very exciting news for Handmaid's Tale fans, it was recently announced that Bruce Miller is currently adapting the novel for a new television series – well, he was, and he will continue to do so after the Writer’s Strike concludes. In the meantime, join us as we discuss the plot of the novel in great detail, as well as thoughts as to how it might weave into the current state of the events and characters in the television series. We had so many thoughts, in fact, that we decided to split the episode into two parts, so if you missed it, we suggest you listen to Part One first since we cover the plot synopsis in that segment! Next up, we will begin our series of podcast discussions on specific characters and their arcs over the 5 seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale to date. So come back in a couple weeks for our deep dive into the fascinating and badass character of June Osborne! As always, come find us on social media where we post daily content on Instagram and Twitter...errr X.

The Handmaid's Tale - Differences from Book to Screen

8/25/2023
Today we kick off our new line up of topical episodes with The Handmaid’s Tale: Differences from Book to Screen. Margaret Atwood published The Handmaid’s Tale in 1985 to immediate critical acclaim. The instant literary classic, which Margaret had initially written in longhand on yellow legal pads, won the 1985 Governor General's Award and the first Arthur C. Clarke Award in 1987, among many others over the years. And it’s now received the latest honor of being banned in many states! Thirty two years later, Bruce Miller released Season One of The Handmaid’s Tale on Hulu, also to immediate critical acclaim. In addition to its 8 Emmy wins for Season One (from 13 nominations), it became the first drama series on a streaming service to win an Emmy for Outstanding Series. It has continued to collect various award nominations over the next four seasons, and a massive fan base. Join us as we discuss some of the most notable creative decisions and changes made by Bruce Miller and his team to adapt Margaret Atwood’s literary masterpiece into the ground breaking television show it is. And come back in two weeks for a discussion on her sequel, The Testaments, which we are thrilled to announce is already in the process of being adapted to screen by Bruce Miller. After that we will begin our series of podcast discussions on specific characters and their arcs over the 5 seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale to date.
