Pine Ridge is one of the poorest areas in the United States with some of the lowest life expectancy rates. Whitney is a woman of the Oglala Lakota Nation and works at a federally qualified health center that takes a holistic and trauma-informed approach to treating behavioral health and substance use disorders. She highlights that healthcare is far more than appointments, prescriptions, and forced compliance to care plans. Her methods are the focus of this conversation. Recorded back over the summer of 2021 while Adrianne was unemployed and unlicensed in Minnesota, she was able to get Amie and Sara of the Gritty Nurse podcast on the line (they’ve had a busy busy summer) to answer all her questions. Their focus is on Amie and Sara’s activism in their home country of Canada, pushing for safety and respect for nurses. They have created spaces for nurses in forums that had no nurses at the table and they’re going to talk about how they did it.
