Neal was named the Big Eight Newcomer of the Year in 1977. He was selected national freshman lineman of the year in 1977. Neal is the father of current Cyclone Patrick Neal and former Iowa State basketball player John Neal. Brian Neal played on Iowa State's Peach Bowl and Liberty Bowl teams
