America’s puritanical roots are never more exposed than they are when the subject of "self-love" is discussed or, more often, avoided by schools and parents. Some religions explicitly discourage it. But when it comes to our coming of age years, coming is often top of mind and a favored topic in the backs of school buses, online chats and locker rooms. "Self-love" is an intensely personal experience that can often reveal our sexual preferences producing euphoria as well as deep personal shame. This episode features stories about "self-love" and the stew of emotions it often conjures up as well as some awkward social situations. Here's a list of the interviewees whose stories are featured along with links to their original, full interviews. Cold Open: Sam (S1E1) School yard talk. Grainy, distorted porn that emerged from scrambled cable channels. Porn that validated feelings that may have been impossible to articulate. Porn that provided a starting point to begin deciding what turns us on and what doesn’t. S5E3 - Origins Vol.3: Mother's Nature

12/21/2023
Femininity and queerness go hand in hand; that’s the conventional wisdom, anyway. So it follows that our mom’s should be supportive, non-judgmental, embracing of our idiosyncrasies and accepting of children who don’t conform to conventional expectations of gender. But it doesn’t always work out that way. In this episode, Dave introduces a collection of stories about moms who teach us, disappoint us and, occasionally, surprise us. Here’s a list of contributors for this episode in the order in which they are presented along with links to their full length episodes in the Fruitbowl archive: Jerry (S1E4) “Hairy chest Pilgrim”; Andrew (S4E11) “Do you want to go to the mall?”; Saira (S3E11) “What do you think a blowjob is?”; Karilla (S3E3) “Just read a book or something.”; DeAunte (S3E3) “Shout out to my Aunties.”; Justin (S4E1) “A family of matriarchs.”; Andre (S3E17) “Kid, you’re a pussy.”; Steven (S4E14) “Hippie Mom.”; Ari (S4E3) “Crying in the desert.” ; Paul (S3E5) “Telling mom everything.”; Nathan (S3E4) “Queer Aunt, Uncle & A Cool Mom.”; Jerusha (S2E1) “A Grandmother who fought AIDS.”; Kenny (S4E6) “Kicked out by mom.”; Breona (S4E18) “A sweet and fierce mom.” This episode was edited by Dave Quantic, the creator of Fruitbowl. S5E2 - Origins Vol.2: Our Flawed Fathers

12/7/2023
There are as many cliches about fatherhood as there are about queer people. Dads are little league coaches, the leaders of prayers, the final word in family debates, trusted voices of wisdom who guide their children through adolescence and prepare them for adulthood. Join Dave as he introduces a chorus of queers who describe their complex relationships with their fathers and what their patriarchs did (or didn’t do) when they found themselves in charge of kids who drew outside the lines of the typical heteronormative behavior. S4E18 - Breona, 34. Mt. Vernon, WA

12/29/2022
Breona is a professional sex therapist and author who lives not far from her hometown of Mt. Vernon, WA: home to the annual tulip festival. Growing up, Breona didn’t have many resources to answer her questions about sex. An early investigation to online porn was discovered by her parents and inspired her mother to have The Talk with her, but questions remained about being “in love” and responding to her body’s sexual instincts. College provided opportunities to finally dive into the “full menu” of sex, but she eventually realized she wasn’t enjoying sex so much as performing it for her partners. Coming out and finally having conversations about pleasure with her partners inspired her to become a sex therapist and help others discover themselves. One way she’s done that is by writing The Clitarus Chronicles, a humorous and educational story about Clitty: an adorable, clitoris-shaped, cartoon dinosaur with the dream to write a novel but needs help figuring out the climax. The book features a meaningful metaphor about prioritizing pleasure and communication with partners and it’s illustrated by Fruitbowl’s multi-talented editor, Danny Tayara! Learn more about Breona’s professional counseling practice at www.colorful-therapy.com. Breona's story brings us to the conclusion of Fruitbowl's Season 4. I will be taking a hiatus in January to recharge and make a plan for next year's production. We are currently without a sponsor so I will also spend time pitching to potential sponsors. S4E17 - John C., Tallulah, LA

12/14/2022
Listen on Apple Podcasts Listen on Spotify John C. has had an unpredictable professional career and sexual history. He grew up in the deep south with racist family members and neighbors. Sexual experimentation with a friend happened early on, but, later, in college, things got complicated when a coworker raped John after a night of drugs and drinking. Jealous partners during his years as an aerobics instructor and boyfriends who didn't "get" his drag performance were additional obstacles. But through it all, John has maintained his irrepressible spirit and laser sharp humor which he expresses most clearly through his amazing drag persona, Connie. He even talks a little about Connie being a guest on RuPaul's Drag Race. S4E16 - Zachery, 24. Seattle

11/23/2022
When I was preparing to record my intro to Zachery’s episode, I started to compose a long reflection on the recent tragedy in Colorado Springs where a 22 year old monster with a rife decided to murder 5 innocent people in a gay bar, but every attempt I made trying to articulate my rage and sadness seemed trite and cliché. So I decided to simply dedicate this episode to the victims. Some listeners might wonder why I don’t have more famous people on Fruitbowl and the reason is simple: famous people are not very relatable. I prefer to feature stories of everyday people; queer people who have found a way to be themselves and live without apology. Many have escaped abusive homes, parents, communities and found new families who love them for who they are. The saddest part of tragedies like the one in Colorado is reading the obituaries of the people whose lives were cut short by hate and violence. They are almost always described as caring, compassionate, fun to be around and I have no doubt that is true. They sound like the kind of people I would have loved to interview for Fruitbowl and it breaks my heart that I will never be able to hear their stories. I hope you can honor the lives of those we have lost to anti-queer violence by fiercely living your truth and continuing to love whomever you want to love, regardless of their gender, gender expression, race, income, age, background, culture. That’s what queer people before us have fought so hard for and there’s really no better way to tick off the bullies - the monsters with rifles and the politicians who encourage them - who try to silence us. And now, back to my regularly scheduled introduction: If you’re a kinkster or interested in exploring kink, you’re gonna love Zachery’s interview. Even though he’s only 24, Zachery has explored a wide variety of sexual activities that fall far outside of the definition of “vanilla” and he’s had a lot of fun adventures along the way. He also brings with him a background in public health and sexual advocacy as well a stint working at Doghouse Leathers, Seattle’s local queer sex shop. Originally from small town Michigan where he came out to his family and friends at age 16, Zachery came to Washington for academics and exploring his ever-expanding taste for adventurous sex. You might even say he’s a sex explorer. Thanks to our post-production sponsor, the new SPACES app, powered by Hornet! Learn more about it HERE. S4E15 - Dave, 49. Derby, KS

11/3/2022
Fruitbowl’s creator and producer, Dave Quantic, provides his first full-length Fruitbowl interview in this “very special” episode hosted by editor Ryan Weadon. Dave’s sexual orientation came into focus early on while growing up in small-town, suburban Kansas in the late eighties, but the only place he could meet other queer people was cruising bathrooms and public parks in near-by Wichita. An assault and HIV scare inspired him to come out in college and, eventually, to his family. Since then, he’s lived in Dallas, New York City, Los Angeles and Seattle and, along the way, his preferences for negotiating love, sex and friendship have diverged from conventional ideas about relationships. It’s only in the last few years that he’s figured out what he wants and how he wants to live as a gay man. Thanks to our post-production sponsor, the new SPACES app, powered by Hornet! S4E14 - Steven M., 50. Tucson, AZ

10/20/2022
Steven grew up in his “shit-kicking” town of Tucson, AZ and even though it was liberal compared to the rest of the state, he was still a target for bullies because of his lisp and his habit of staring at other guys in the locker room. But summer adventures with his Dad in Ojai, CA taught him that a wondrous queer world waited for him outside of Tucson. Since recording his original Fruitbowl interview in 2019, Steven has gone through some major life events that he talks about in a follow-up conversation with the editor for this episode, Bayley Boecker. S4E13 - Lizzie, 29. Seattle

10/6/2022
Lizzie grew up in super-liberal Seattle with super-cool, neo-hippie parents who had lots of queer friends and didn’t bat an eye when Lizzie let them know that she was … not straight. Lizzie took the lead when it came to her first time with a guy and you’ll enjoy hearing about her other adventures with a girl from her gym, an Irish bartender and a French Canadian who swept her off her feet - enough for her to risk being detained by Canadian police at the border. When she was young, Lizzie also had a very special relationship with a water jet at her swimming pool. Originally recorded in December of 2019, Lizzie’s interview covers a lot of ground. Also featured in this episode: a follow-up interview recorded just a few weeks ago with editor Danny Tayara followed by a super-cool song from Lizzie’s band, Creature Hole! S4E11 - Andrew, 31. Philadelphia

9/8/2022
Listen on Apple Podcasts Listen on Spotify Andrew was a self-described baby drag queen when he was little, putting on makeup and heels and performing for his parents. So when he told his mom at age 10 he was gay, her reaction was, “I know. Do you still wanna go to the mall?” But just because Andrew was out didn’t mean adolescence was a walk in the park. A self-described awkward kid, he struggled with ADHD and anxiety. At age 8 he was sexually abused at a theater camp and, in his teens, started acting out by abusing substances. His parents admitted him into a “troubled teen” facility in Utah which was further traumatizing. Originally recorded in 2019, this episode also features a “follow-up” interview recorded just one month ago that finds Andrew in a much more secure place now. Currently, he’s proud to work at Nacy Warner Associates, a social justice consulting and advocacy non-profit in Albany, New York. Andrew is also a gifted musician. S4E10 - Mike B., 69. NYC

7/28/2022
Gay men had a lot of variables to balance while coming of age in the 70s and 80s: the sexual revolution & liberation, drug culture, AIDS, social stigma and intimacy and Coming out wasn’t easy while he was working on Wall Street. Through all of it, Mike tried to stay true to himself while figuring out that, as sexual beings, we are in a constant state of evolution. Later in life, Mike became a leader and activist, sitting on executive boards of many national gay organizations. Now he dedicates himself to educating and learning from younger generations via his popular Instagram account (@bammer47), a YouTube channel and podcast. His hope is that, by engaging with different generations will bring us all closer together. Sounds a lot like what I try to do with Fruitbowl which makes it so amazing that Mike agreed to contribute his history to our archive. I know you'll find a lot to relate to with his story. S4E9 - Puddin', 35. Atlanta

7/14/2022
Originally from a small town in Georgia, Puddin’s coming of age was divided in two. Outwardly, he was a devout Christian of the Pentecostal tradition and aspired to be a church leader and during sermons, homosexuality was always used as an example of the worst kind of sin. Privately, though, he struggled with his sexuality and was the target of abuse by a family member. After his family found out, he tried several different faith-based solutions for “curing” himself and, in the process, met other queer people like him for the first time in his life. A gay friend in college encouraged Puddin’ to consider - just maybe - that God didn’t hate him for being gay and, eventually, he left the church and moved to a gay commune where he learned how to live off the grid and love himself. S4E8 - Debra, 71. Palo Alto

6/30/2022
You might assume you don’t have much in common with a 71 year old lesbian, but consider these three points: 1. Debra came of age at the dawn of the sexual revolution; 2. She’s a legend in the lesbian kink community and has some really fun kink play stories; 3. She is a total badass and a one of a kind human. Growing up in famously liberal Palo Alto, Debra was a precocious young woman, hungry for knowledge but a proposal from a “perfect” boyfriend in her 20s felt premature so she broke his heart and dove into the deep end of California 70s counterculture at UC Santa Cruz. Soon she was exploring the GLBT club and her sexuality was confirmed when she saw a gorgeous woman step off her motorcycle and reveal her long, luscious hair. Since then, it’s been one adventure after another: New York, Seattle, LA. And the adventure continues to this day. Debra recently decided to leave LA, move into a van and travel the country visiting friends and making new ones. Check out this link for Route 70+, a charming short film by Nina Penzhorn that illustrates Debra’s journey. Her final advice: have as much fun sex as you can so you can look back on it fondly when you’re old. Thanks to our post-production sponsor, the new SPACES app, powered by Hornet! S4E7 - Getting Fresh with Gayish - ORGIES

6/16/2022
In this Getting Fresh episode, Dave welcomes his in-studio guests: the creators of the Seattle-based Gayish podcast, Kyle and Mike and asks them about their podcast’s origin and its unique format: unpacking gay stereotypes one episode at a time. Then we listen to a listener-submitted story that describes the writer’s first time at an orgy and we discuss our own orgy adventures and our different experiences and expectations when it comes to group sex. Speaking of group sex, the orgy story was narrated by Paul who was featured in Season 3, Episode 5 of Fruitbowl. Paul Rosenberg is a writer, singer, actor and production designer living in Seattle. He is the founder and manager of Rain City Jacks, a nonprofit jack-off club in Seattle, and creator of The Heart of Jacks Podcast, an interview show exploring sexuality with a focus on the history and culture of jack-off clubs. S4E6 - Kenny, 30. Hutchinson, KS

6/2/2022
Kenny is the definition of a survivor. After experiencing abuse by a family member and getting kicked out of the house by his single mom while still in high school, Kenny lived in his car until he decided to move in with his first boyfriend. A move to Chicago for a job seemed like an opportunity to start fresh until he was laid off and had to turn to sex work in order to support himself. But despite all the challenges, he refuses to feel shame about his past and his sexuality.
