3/5/2026
Welcome back to The Main Thing Podcast — your wisdom podcast where we explore insights, stories, and ideas that help us get a little bit better at life.
In this episode, host Skip Lineberg sits down with optometrist, author, and community leader Dr. Brad Lane for a thoughtful conversation about mindset, perception, and the power of intentional focus.

Drawing from both neuroscience and real-life experience, Brad explains the role of the reticular activating system—a powerful mental filter that influences what we notice, believe, and ultimately become.

Ep. 141 - Switching Microphones with Chip VanAlsburg
2/18/2026
When the Mic Turns Around
What happens when interviewer becomes interviewee?
In this special role-reversal episode of The Main Thing, longtime friend Chip VanAlsburg steps in as host to turn the microphone on Skip Lineberg. Together, they explore the origin story behind the podcast, the deeper spiritual motivation driving it, and what it really takes to distill knowledge into wisdom that helps people get better at life.
Pulling Back the Curtain on The Main Thing
From childhood conversations with elders to the "Holy Spirit moment" that birthed the show. And from the unseen, labor-intensive work behind each 25-minute episode… Skip pulls back the curtain, as Chip presents his own brand of insightful, soul-piercing questions.
On Light, Leadership, and the Long Game
The duo also dives into:
Last but not least, Chip shares his own emerging vision—an honest, heartfelt look at trauma, healing, storytelling, and what he calls "big medicine."
If you've ever wondered why this podcast exists—or what wisdom is really for—this conversation will meet you right where you are.
Press play. Reflect deeply. Share generously.
A Bit More About Our Wise Guest-Host
Chip VanAlsburg is a big thinker with a restless mind and a wide-open heart. He challenges assumptions, pushes boundaries, and rarely accepts "no" as the final answer—especially when curiosity or conviction is involved. Bold and unafraid, Chip has spent more than two decades leading in the media, technology, and telecommunications worlds, holding roles such as General Manager, Vice President, and most recently Director at Lumen Technologies in Pittsburgh.
But titles only tell part of the story. Chip is a glutton for experiences, with a voracious appetite for life and learning. He's an avid user of emojis, deeply fond of laughter, and unashamed of tears when the moment calls for them. His ego is squarely in check, even as his irises stay cranked wide open in a lifelong quest for peace, perspective, and enlightenment.
What makes Chip compelling isn't just what he's accomplished—it's how he shows up: courageous, curious, emotionally honest, and fully engaged with the world around him. He brings that same energy and depth to conversation, making him the kind of guest who doesn't just share insights—he invites reflection.
Now, buckle up and get ready to join the duo in exploring the concept of living a good life by pursuing purpose with humility, resilience and faith. This episode was recorded in-person, face-to-face inside Parkwood Studios in Almost Heaven, West Virginia.

Ep. 139 - Skip's Quips: The Worst Christmas Gift I Ever Recieved
12/19/2025
The Worst Christmas Gift I Ever Received
Welcome, wisdom-seekers to Skip's Quips - a Holiday Special Edition!
This week on The Main Thing Podcast, we're doing something a little different — and a little more intimate. No guest. No interview. Just you and me, gathered around a story that has stayed with me for nearly half a century.
And it couldn't be landing at a better time. Today is a week before Christmas, and most of us are feeling the familiar holiday squeeze — the pressure to get it right, to pick the perfect gifts, to keep all the moving parts moving. Before the wrapping paper flies and the chaos peaks, let's pause to unwrap a story that surprised me… and eventually shaped me.
This is the tale of the worst Christmas gift I ever received — and the unexpected wisdom it carried.
About This Special Episode
In this short Christmas reflection, I take you back to 1976, when ten-year-old Skip unwrapped a gift that left him confused, disappointed, and wondering what he had done wrong. But what I didn't know then — and what I can see so clearly now — is that the quiet gifts we don't understand often become the ones that shape our character the most deeply.
This story is a reminder that:
It's my Christmas gift to you today — a little wisdom wrapped in memory, gratitude, and hindsight.
Where's the Special Guest and What's a "Skip's Quip?"
We are doing something a little different. I'll be sharing a wisdom lesson with you—but there won't be a guest. Just me, sharing wisdom. A short wisdom lesson of less than 10 minutes total. We plan to do these about 6 times a year. We're calling these special editions - "Skip's Quips."
Don't worry, we will still bring you wisdom conversations with our special guests twice a month. Additionally, you will receive "Skip's Quips" to supplement to our regular wisdom programming. Let us know what you think, and please share your feedback. You can do that via SpeakPipe.
This special "Skip's Quip" will help you:

Ep. 135 - Conversations with My Mentor John (Pt. Four): The Courage to Change
10/22/2025
Welcome to a very special wisdom mini-series. This four-part project originates from an archive of rare 2004 recordings of wisdom conversations with my mentor, John Wells Jr. In the truest sense this batch of wisdom has been two decades in the making. Sadly, John passed away in early February 2005, after battling cancer. Those conversations and recordings served as a pre-cursor, perhaps even a prequel to this podcast which launched 15 years later in 2019.
The Courage to Change
Part Four features what was, perhaps, John’s favorite story to tell, his favorite wisdom lesson. It showcases John’s humility and his lifelong commitment to learning. John Wells Jr never stopped striving to better himself, to improve. That passion fueled his physical fitness, as you heard in Part One, as well as his business acumen, as you’ll hear in this episode. I think this lesson was his favorite because something he was initially opposed to doing, surprised him with such a positive outcome and impact. You see, to John, learning something was more important and more valuable than simply being right about something.
As you listen today, you will get a feel for the Well Home Furnishings flagship store, as well as their innovative approach to business and leadership.
The wisdom lesson you get in this episode is straightforward and immediately applicable. It provides a powerful illustration of the values of humility and adaptability in business success. It also delivers a strong reminder of the need to be open to—and ready for—change. Let’s face it, that’s not always easy.
More About Our Wise Guest - John Wells, Jr.
John was one of the most effective and influential mentors in my lifetime. He taught, led and influenced me, opening my eyes and expanding my thinking on those things that truly matter. I was deeply blessed to know him.
John was a dedicated retail veteran and community leader who co-founded Wells Home Furnishings. Known for his entrepreneurial spirit, he led his business to award-winning success. Beyond his career, Wells was deeply involved in civic and youth service organizations in Charleston, including the Boys Scouts, YMCA and United Way, among others, reflecting his commitment to community betterment.
In 2000, John was honored with the prestigious Ernst Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Though he never sought the spotlight, one day the President of the United States, George W. Bush, stood in Charleston and honored John Wells for his service. His legacy is marked by his dedication to his family, his profession and his community, leaving a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.

A Powerful Six-Word Phrase for Leaders

Ep. 133 - Conversations with John (Pt. Two): The Art of Visualization

The Art of Visualization
In Part Two of our our mini-series, John tells one of his favorite stories. It’s the story of the world’s most famous sculptor, Michelangelo, working to craft the statue of David. This story is a wisdom lesson illustrating the incredible power of belief guided by the art of visualization.
When John shared this story with me, it inspired me to take my marketing consulting firm, once a dream, to a greater level of reality. He challenged me to envision the greatest form my business and my life could attain.
What might John’s rousing story inspire in you today?

Ep. 132 - Conversations with John: Seeing the Struggle as an Opportunity
9/26/2025
Welcome to a very special episode and wisdom mini-series. This four-part series originates from an archive of rare 2004 recordings of wisdom conversations with my mentor, John Wells Jr.
Sadly, John passed away in early February 2005, after battling cancer. Those conversations and recordings served as a pre-cursor, perhaps even a prequel to this podcast which launched 15 years later in 2019. In the truest sense this has been two decades in the making.
Embracing Adversity with Grace and Resilience
Here in Part One our our mini-series, you will hear John share a wisdom lesson with me on the importance of embracing and reframing adversity. Football season is upon us, and appropriately John’s lesson is rooted in a mythical football game. There are victories … and then there are special victories.
More About Our Wise Guest - John Wells, Jr.
John was one of the most effective and influential mentors in my lifetime. He taught, led and influenced me, opening my eyes and expanding my thinking on those things that truly matter. I was deeply blessed to know him.
John was a dedicated retail veteran and community leader who co-founded Wells Home Furnishings after working his years working at R.H. Kyle Furniture Co. Known for his entrepreneurial spirit, he led his business to award-winning success and earned induction into the National Wholesale Furniture Association Hall of Fame. Beyond his career, Wells was deeply involved in civic and youth service organizations in Charleston, including the Boys Scouts, YMCA and United Way, among others, reflecting his commitment to community betterment.
His leadership extended to serving as past president of the National Wholesale Furniture Association, where he influenced industry standards and fostered professional growth. Locally, John was known as an effective, tireless leader and chairperson of several charity fundraising drives.
His excellence was recognized on the national stage. In 2000, John was honored with the prestigious Ernst Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award. He never sought the spotlight, and yet one day the President of the United States, George W. Bush, stood in Charleston and honored John Wells for his service. His legacy is marked by his dedication to his family, his profession and his community, leaving a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.

Ep. 131 - Marine Cmdr. Jake Harriman Shares Unifying Wisdom
8/21/2025
From Combat Zones to Community Hubs: Jake Harriman's Journey of Servant Leadership
I first heard about Jake Harriman by way of his guest appearance on The Jocko Willink Podcast. Immediately I was drawn to his mission, heart and bias for action. Jake Harriman is a former US Marine Commander who spent more than a decade abroad defending our nation from enemies, terrorism and other global threats. But when Jake retired from active military duty and returned to America, in his words, he no longer recognized the nation he had spent so many years defending. Jake quickly saw that Americans were at war with one another. Rather than just lamenting this sad situation, Jake decided to do something about it, and you'll learn all about that in today's episode.
More About Our Wise Guest - Jake Harriman
Jake Harriman graduated with distinction from the United States Naval Academy and served seven and a half years in the US Marine Corps as a platoon commander in both the infantry and force recon. Following his service in the military, Jake enrolled at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Following his service in the military, Jake enrolled at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. While at Stanford, he founded Nuru International to eradicate extreme poverty in the world's most unstable, vulnerable regions, to help end violent extremism. Jake also played a vital role in drafting, introducing and passing groundbreaking new legislation called the Global Fragility Act of 2019 that equips America with new authorities and resources to prevent conflict and stabilize some of the most fragile regions around the world.
Today, Jake is the founder and president of More Perfect Union, a veteran-led civic organization that works to unite the country and strengthen our communities through social connection, service and civic engagement.

Ep. 129 - Skip's Quips: Sometimes You Just Have to Say Yes
6/29/2025
A productive, peaceful workday morning in 2002, suddenly shifted into a frenzy of quick decision-making and high-profile event planning. What turned it? An unexpected phone call from the White House transformed that ordinary Wednesday into something truly extraordinary. Join me, Skip Lineberg, on "The Main Thing Podcast" as we explore a remarkable tale of seizing unexpected opportunities.
Seizing Serendipity: A 4th of July to Remember
When my former company, Maple Creative, was invited to assist with President George W. Bush's 4th of July 2002 visit to Ripley, West Virginia, it was all thanks to a former student intern who remembered us. This unexpected opportunity highlights the significance of relationships and the ripple effect they can have on our lives and careers. Beyond that, this unique story illustrates the power of saying “Yes,” even when you don’t yet have all the answers or resources. Join us on this wisdom journey and discover how such moments can shape our lives and careers in the most unforeseen ways.
Where’s the Special Guest and What’s a “Skip’s Quip?"
We are doing something a little different. I’ll be sharing a wisdom lesson with you—but there won’t be a guest. Just me, sharing wisdom. A short wisdom lesson - about 10 minutes total. We plan to do these about 6 times a year. We’re calling these special editions - “Skip’s Quips.”
Don’t worry, we will still bring you wisdom conversations with our special guests twice a month. Additionally, you will receive “Skip’s Quips” to supplement to our regular wisdom programming. Let us know what you think, and please share your feedback. You can do that via SpeakPipe.

In our conversation with Pia, we dive into the essence of creativity as a vital force beyond the arts, challenging the common misconception that it exists solely in artistic endeavors. She shares insights on how creativity is akin to teaching and coaching, requiring courage and the willingness to embrace uncertainty. We also explore creativity in unexpected domains, from science to law, and highlight its universality, encouraging everyone to recognize their inherent creative potential, irrespective of their field or background.
Shared wisdom and stories, like Pia’s rather spontaneous decision to take a four-week journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway, illustrate how we hold the power to rewrite our narratives. We also delve into practical steps for nurturing creativity in everyday life, from morning routines to visualizing desired outcomes, empowering listeners to take control of their own creative destinies.

Ep. 125: From Military to Ministry - Dave Schutter's Wisdom Journey
3/31/2025
What if you could redefine your identity beyond titles and roles? How do you know which path to take when you come upon a fork in the road along life’s journey? Join us, as we explore these profound questions with our remarkably wise guest, Dave Schutter.
From Military to Ministry - Dave Schutter’s Wisdom Journey
Our special guest Dave Schutter had his sights set on a military career, dreaming of an appointment to West Point. But God had a different plan for his life. From his dreams of West Point to a transformative mission trip to Albania, Dave's journey is a testament to adaptability, faith and finding purpose. Together, we unravel the intricate balance of separating who we are from what we do, sharing experiences from his time as a military chaplain in Afghanistan and his work in pastoral ministry. It's an engaging conversation steeped in life's simple joys and the wisdom found in unexpected places.
More about Pastor Dave Schutter
Dave is a military veteran, a pastor and a pizza aficionado. Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, as the son of a military man, Dave dreamed of attending West Point, but a sports injury prevented him from passing the fitness entrance exam. He didn't give up on that dream and years later Dave qualified for that appointment to the US Military Academy at West Point. But he turned down that opportunity in favor of something different.
Today, Dave leads the congregation at Northwest Presbyterian Church as Senior Pastor. Notably in Dave's life, he served as a military Chaplain in the US Army, including an active deployment in Afghanistan. That tour of duty earned him the prestigious Bronze Star.
Dave Schutter graduated with a Master of Divinity degree from Covenant Theological Seminary in 1997 and earned a Master of Theology degree from Westminster Seminary in 2017. He completed his undergraduate studies at Miami (Ohio) University in 1993. Dave is also a contributor to the Jonathan Edwards Encyclopedia (Eerdmans, Fall 2017) and the Jonathan Edwards Global Sermon Editing Project.
Dave, his wife Kim, and their three children live in the Columbus Ohio area.
