One is genuinely spooky, and the other is spooky on account of how bad it is... First up, we dive into the hit new film from Shudder, Colin and Cameron Caire's LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL. The film follows cinema journeyman David Dastmalchian as late night talk show host Jack Delroy. On Halloween Night 1977, hoping to get a much-needed ratings boost, Jack invites a parapsychologist and a young girl possessed by a demon on to his show. Soon, all hell breaks loose, and it is all captured in this found footage film. We dive into all angles of this one, what we liked, what we didn't, what we thought could have made it pop, and even the much maligned AI element of the film, that has turned away some viewers. Did it still deliver enough scares to be spooky delight? Tune in... Then, we turn our attentions to the most recent outing from the Ghostbusters franchise, GHOSTBUSTERS : FROZEN EMPIRE. The Ghostbusters are back from the Afterlife to deliver another film that pretty much rehashes the original Ghostbusters again. Be prepared, we (mostly Fil) go off on this one. So, if you like hearing us complain, this episode is for you. Silver lining? Are we turning around Finn Wolfhard (despite him doing nooooothing in this movie?) He is a fan of the Prince Charles Cinema, so he gets bonus points for that. Tune in for all this, and who knows, maybe even a fashion update... "The power of Christ compels you! This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, it's the 3rd episode of the monthly miniseries – BROTHERLY LOVE – where we are pitting some films from filmmaking brothers the Coen Brothers vs. the Farrelly Brothers. This month, it's all about bowling! For some reason, both of these sets of brothers made bowling movies – and both of them performed pretty badly on release, only to become cult classics. So, we'll be talking about Joel & Ethan Coen's 1998 neo-noir comedy THE BIG LEBOWSKI, and Peter & Bobby Farrelly's 1996 sports comedy, KINGPIN. Which is the better bowling movie? In The Big Lebowski, Jeff Bridges shines in a career role as Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski in a tale of mistaken identity, deceitfulness, severed toes, nihilists, White Russians and lots of bowling. After his rug get soiled by a couple of guys looking for money from a millionaire with the same name, The Dude falls down a rabbit hole that feels straight out of a Raymond Chandler novel. This film is damn near perfect. It's funny, has a great story, stellar performances with a supporting cast boasting John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Julianne Moore and John Turturro, a kick ass soundtrack and some insanely good cinematography from Roger Deakins. The Dude Abides. But is it a better bowling movie than Kingpin? Woody Harrelson plays Roy Munson, a young bowler who is just about to make it big, before his rival, Ernie McCracken (Bill Murray doing Bill Murray shit) tricks him into doing con games, which results in Roy's bowling hand getting destroyed. Years later, Roy is an alcoholic with a hook for a hand and no prospects, before he stumbles upon Ishmael (Randy Quaid), a promising young Amish man that Roy attempts to take to the top of the bowling world. It's more of what you expect from the Farrelly's, with some gross out humour, fun 90s soundtracks, and some hit or miss elements. But, it's pretty much the Farrelly's most underrated, and potentially one of their better titles. And, it actually is more about bowling than The Big Lebowksi, it just may look as nice. For the first instalment of this Book Club series, we tackle Whitley Strieber's 1987 non-fiction bestseller, COMMUNION, which was made into the 1989 sci-fi horror of the same name, starring Christopher Walken. In December 1985, renowned sci-fi/horror novelist Whitley Strieber (The Wolfen, The Hunger) had an unexplainable experience; a shattering assault from the unknown. Experiences in which he "lost time" and has terrifying flashbacks, which hypnosis undertaken by Dr. Donald F. Klein and ufologist Budd Hopkins later links to an alleged encounter with aliens. To all appearances, he and his family have had a series of elaborate personal encounters with intelligent non-human beings in his isolated cabin in upstate New York. At first, he thought he was losing his mind. Unconcerned with the whole phenomenon of UFOs and extraterrestrials, he viewed them as a false unknown, easily explainable as misperceptions or hallucinations. But the visitors marched right into the middle of the life of this indifferent sceptic. Who are these visitors? Where do they come from? Do they represent some as-yet-unidentified aspect of the human mind - incredible, almost beyond comprehension, but essentially human - or are they what they seem to be, visitors of unknown origin? If this happened to you, and you wrote a bestselling novel about it, and decided to make a movie based on your experiences, would you let Christopher Walken come in and improvise a bunch of stuff, dance with puppets, and make you look like a lunatic? I would hope not. We were inspired to dive into this book and its wacky adaptation from our I Want To Believe Arc over last Halloween, where we were discussing Alien Movies. During this arc, we kept asking ourselves, "What really is the alien agenda?" Now, we don't know if we are any closer to the truth after witnessing Christopher Walken dance around with aliens and make the writer of this book look like a complete ass hat, but maybe... just maybe... the truth is still out there! "I am you. And you are me. And we are here. I am the dreamer and you are the dream."

This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, it's Week 2 of the new miniseries – BROTHERLY LOVE – where we'll once a month be pitting some films from filmmaking brothers the Coen Brothers vs. the Farrelly Brothers. This month, we'll be looking at two of the biggest films from each brother duo, with Joel and Ethan Coen's Academy Award-winning film from 1996, FARGO, vs Peter and Bobby Farrelly's smash hit from 1998, THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY (we decided to jump ahead to 1998 for Farrelly's so we could pit 1996's Kingpin vs 1998's The Big Lebowski – you know... bowling, dude!) In Fargo, Frances McDormand shines as a pregnant police officer attempting to solve three murders in her jurisdiction, that all lead back to William H. Macy – a car salesman who hires two criminals (Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare) to kidnap his wife for ransom money. It stands as the Coen Brothers' signature film, that inspired a television, and introduced the world to the endearing Minnesota accent. With a stellar cast, incredible performances, top-notch writing and direction, and brilliant cinematography, it'd be hard for most films to beat it. So, how did There's Something About Mary compare? Ben Stiller plays a guy who's looking for the girl that got away – the simply perfect, Mary, played by Cameron Diaz in her breakthrough role. When he hires a private investigator (Matt Dillion) to track her down, the investigator also falls for Mary, leading to a silly love triangle. We've got balls being zipped up in trousers, dogs being drugged, NFL Superstars getting tackled by normal men playing intellectually challenged men, and old lady boobs. It's a Farrelly Brothers film... At least there is the wonderful Jonathan Richman to sing us through the film. This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, we present a brand-new miniseries – BROTHERLY LOVE – where we'll once a month be pitting some films from filmmaking brothers the Coen Brothers vs. the Farrelly Brothers. Both sets of brothers saw some of their best films come out between 1994 - 2003, and we'll be taking a look into this small window of time to see who is the best of the brother filmmakers (I mean, we know who it is... it's just for fun. You know... for kids?) In the debut episode, we'll be looking at two films from 1994, with Joel and Ethan Coen's first big budget studio film, THE HUDSUCKER PROXY, vs Peter and Bobby Farrelly's debut feature, DUMB & DUMBER. Tim Robbins, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Paul Newman lead the Coen's The Hudsucker Proxy, about a mailroom clerk who is plucked from obscurity to be the president of a major corporation in order for the scheming board to take over full control of the company's stock. A throwback to the screwball comedies of the 30s and 40s, the film failed at the box office, but became a big cult hit. But, is the fast-talking comedy enough to take on the Farrelly's breakout first feature? In Dumb & Dumber, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are two moronic buddies who take a briefcase across the country to return it to a woman they think lost it, getting mixed up in a kidnapping plot and a whole load of other shenanigans. It's incredibly dumb, but still packs in plenty of laughs 30 years later. The film was the crowning achievement in Jim Carrey's massive run of 1994 (which also saw him star in Ace Ventura and The Mask) that would see him become one of the biggest stars of the 90s. Loosely based on the real story of the Jamaican bobsleigh team, that qualified to compete in the 1988 Winter Olympics, we take a look back on this 30-year-old classic, and have varying opinions on how it has held up. Expect lots of arguing, as we dive into how this one got made, an original version of the film, the true story behind the 1988 Jamaican team, and we show some love for John Candy and Leon Robinson (who is probably one of the more underrated Black American actors of his era – seriously, seek out his role as David Ruffin in The Temptations TV movie).
