In this monthly conversation series Grant Scott speaks with editor, writer and curator of photography Bill Shapiro. In an informal conversation each month Grant and Bill comment on the photographic environment as they see it. This month they reflect on where the magazine industry and editorial photography are today from the photographer’s perspective. Bill Shapiro Bill Shapiro served as the Editor-in-Chief of LIFE, the legendary photo magazine; LIFE’s relaunch in 2004 was the largest in Time Inc. history. Later, he was the founding Editor-in-Chief of LIFE.com, which won the 2011 National Magazine Award for digital photography. Shapiro is the author of several books, among them Gus & Me, a children’s book he co-wrote with Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards and, What We Keep, which looks at the objects in our life that hold the most emotional significance. A fine-art photography curator for New York galleries and a consultant to photographers, Shapiro is also a Contributing Editor to the Leica Conversations series. He has written about photography for the New York Times Magazine, Vanity Fair, the Atlantic, Vogue, and Esquire, among others. Every Friday — more or less — he posts about under-the-radar photographers on his Instagram feed, where he’s @billshapiro. Plus this week, photographer Kyle McDougall takes on the challenge of supplying Grant with an audio file no longer than 5 minutes in length in which she answer’s the question ‘What Does Photography Mean to You?’ Kyle McDougall is a documentary photographer from Ontario, Canada, currently residing in the United Kingdom whose work is driven by a fascination with rural environments, quiet spaces, history, and time. After graduating from film school in the early 2000s, Kyle spent the first ten years of his career working as a cinematographer and director in the television industry, as well as running a commercial video production company. In 2017, he and his wife sold their house, left their jobs, and took off on a year-long road trip across North America, which ultimately inspired a new creative direction in his career. His focus has now shifted towards pursuing long-term photography projects and sharing creative and educational content through his YouTube channel. Plus this week, photographer Mandy Williams takes on the challenge of supplying Grant with an audio file no longer than 5 minutes in length in which she answer’s the question ‘What Does Photography Mean to You?’ London based Mandy Williams uses photography, video and sound to expand traditional representations of landscape. She studied for a Graduate Diploma Communications Film, at Goldsmith's College, a BA (Hons) History of Art, Warwick University and a MA Photography at LCC, University of the Arts London. Williams approaches socio-political issues in an experimental, aesthetic style, seeking to comment on urgent narratives through unexpected, diverse visualisations. Her project, England, examines the exclusionary politics of contemporary England through the metaphor of landscape and includes video, a photographic series and a free newspaper with fold-out posters and interview texts. In the sequence of black and white photographs coastal landscapes are merged with alien geographies accessed from NASA, representing a landscape that has become unstable, and which causes harm. While some projects reference personal history, memory and the passage of time, others reflect on contemporary socio-political and environmental concerns. He worked for the The Los Angeles Times, The Boston Globe and Associated Press before working as a staff photographer for fifteen years at The Washington Post. He has covered assignments in over 75 countries including the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the collapse of Venezuela, violence in Mexico, California's historic drought, the Egyptian revolution, gold mining in Peru, climate change in Siberia, life in Brazil's favelas, and the US led invasion and occupation of Iraq. He became interested in natural sciences at a young age, during walks with his grandfather in the wetlands of the Llobregat Delta and graduated in Geology from the University of Barcelona before completing his studies in photography. Bou dedicated fifteen years to advertising and fashion photography, after which, he focused on his true passion of nature. His project, Ornithographies, started in 2015. Huetwell Professor of History and Judaic Studies at the University of Michigan. Dash Moore earned her bachelor's degree in history from Brandeis University and continued her education at Columbia University, receiving her M.A. in history in 1968 and her Ph.D. in 1975. She taught for many years at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York and wrote and co-edited numerous books, articles and collections. Her first book, At Home in America: Second Generation New York Jews was published in 1981 and her second To the Golden Cities: Pursuing the American Jewish Dream in Miami and L. A. in 1994. In 1997 her co-edited two-volume Jewish Women in America: An Historical Encyclopedia was published. In 2004 her book, GI Jews: How World War II Changed a Generation, was awarded The Washington Post Best Book of the Year. In 2008, she published American Jewish Identity Politics a collection of essays and in 2011, her book Gender & Jewish History was awarded a National Jewish Book Award. In 2012, NYU Press published a three-volume series edited by Moore, City of Promises: A History of the Jews of New York. In episode 304 UNP founder and curator Grant Scott is in his shed speaking with master printer Bob Tursack about all aspects of photographic printing including photo books, fine art printing, digital, analogue and lithographic. They also discuss photographer expectations, good practice and the photographer/printer relationship. Bob Tursack, is the CEO of the high-end printing company Brilliant Graphics. He is a third-generation printer who grew up in the Philadelphia suburbs who became interested in photography when he was in junior high. He had his first darkroom in sixth grade and attended the Ansel Adams workshops in Carmel, the Maine Photography Workshops, and other photography courses. Tursack’s father founded Tursack Printing, commercial printers, in 1959, and Bob began training on the small press as a teenager. But his real passion was for fine art prints, and he ultimately sold the company in 1998. Tursack started Brilliant Studio in 2000, in his basement, planning to make prints for artists and photographers as a one-man band. But the business quickly grew, and he soon founded Brilliant Graphics, to produce brochures, catalogues, posters, and books. The company now has 72 employees. His short TRANS, was also screened around the world. He was one of the 17 filmmakers selected for the BFI NETWORK@LFF 2017, which sought to identify original new voices “taking risks and breaking new ground in narrative and form.” Chapman is an alumnus of the industry development programme Berlinale Talents at Berlin Film Festival. His photographic work has appeared in numerous group gallery shows and magazines such as ID and Aesthetica. He is currently developing his debut drama feature TRUANT. Plus this week, photographer Virginia Turbett takes on the challenge of supplying Grant with an audio file no longer than 5 minutes in length in which she answer’s the question ‘What Does Photography Mean to You?’ Virginia Turbett was born in 1957 in rural West Sussex and is a British rock music and social reportage photographer best known for her photographs of bands, fans and street culture between the years of 1977 and 1987. In 1977 Turbett was asked by a good friend to photograph the Sex Pistols recording Pretty Vacant for Slash magazine. A year, and many punk gigs later, a chance meeting with a Sounds journalist led to a collaboration which lasted a few years – photographing Punk, Rock, Pop, Heavy Metal, Mods, New Romantics, Skinheads, Two-Tone, Ska, Reggae, the fans, style and fashion of the time. At the same time, Turbett was working on a left-wing paper photographing social and political stories. In 1979 she was asked by the Editor of Smash Hits magazine, to photograph features and interviews and she continued working on the magazine until she gave up photography to look after her two children in 1987. Turbett contributed to many magazines of the late 70’s and 80’s including The Face, Sounds, Smash Hits, and Record Mirror creating images of artists and musicians including the Pistols, Clash, Blondie, Iggy, Andy Warhol, Frank Zappa and Nick Cave. In this ‘AI/Copyright’ episode UNP founder and curator Grant Scott is in his shed connecting with Nick Dunmur from the Association of Photographers to discuss all aspects of AI and its impact on photography and photographers. You may be surprised and relieved to hear that the future may not be as dark as some believe. Nick Dunmur was born in Oxford, in the UK and grew up in Sheffield. He moved to Nottingham in 1985 and completed a BA (Hons) in Photography at Trent Polytechnic, before beginning to work commercially and establishing a studio in the city's Lace Market working with for clients such as Paul Smith, Triumph and Yamaha Motorcycles. This led to his current commercial and advertising practice, that includes video/moving image and environment-driven photographic print-works. Until June 2013, Dunmur was a non-executive director of the UK based Association Of Photographers and between 2008 and 2011 he held the role of Chair. He teaches on the BA (Hons) Photography at the University of Derby and acts as the Business and Legal adviser to the Association Of Photographers members. He is also one of the founding group of members of Pro Imaging, a trade body which protects the rights of professional photographers. Until 2013, he represented them on the board of the British Photographic Council (BPC) and he now represents the AOP on the same board. More recently, working with a fellow platinum printer, he has devised a method of making digital inkjet negatives allowing digital images to be printed using a range of analogue, alternative processes such as silver gelatin, salt, cyanotype and platinum. Jeff Dunas was born in 1954 in Los Angeles, California. His work spans five decades and has appeared in hundreds of magazines, album covers, books and calendars. Dunas' principal areas of work have included nudes, documentary, portrait and street photography and he is the author of eight monographs and five museum catalogues. As an entrepreneur, he founded Melrose Publishing Company, Collector's Editions, Ltd., launched, edited and published Collectors Photography magazine, and published Darkroom Photography (later Camera & Darkroom). Dunas founded the Palm Springs Photo Festival in 2006 and the Official Portfolio Review at PhotoPlus Expo in 2010. In 2014, he produced and directed PhotoSynthesis, a photography and music festival in Los Angeles for the Annenberg Foundation. His work has been shown in twelve, one-person museum exhibitions and over fifty gallery exhibitions.
