Why Overlanders Make Great Preppers - The Link Between Overlanding and Preparedness

4/14/2024
In this week's episode, I wanted to talk a bit about how I'm falling down the rabbit hole of "prepping" and also why it works really well with overlanding. If you aren't aware of what prepping is or think it's just about the nuclear apocalypse, there's a lot of positivity that comes from being prepared in the event of getting stuck offroad or while remote and a lot of the gear from overlanding carries over to prepping as well. So, check out the full episode to hear why overlanding and prepping go hand in hand and how I'm repurposing some of my old overlanding gear to get more prepared for something like getting stuck or breaking down while overlanding. Overlanding is Out of Control - But We Can Fix It

3/24/2024
In this week's episode of the podcast, I'm going to talk a bit about how people, regardless of their budget for buying rigs or gear, are out of control and actively discouraging people from wanting to join the hobby of overlanding. This isn't an indictment or a scolding, but rather a discussion of how it's happening, some of the ways that we're allowing it to happen, and ultimately, how I think we can come together to fix it. Overlanding Reality Check: What It Really Costs to Go Overlanding

3/10/2024
In this week's episode, I'm going to talk a bit about the real costs of Overlanding. It's something I think a lot of people underestimate, but the dollars can add up quickly if you're not careful and aware of falling into some of the common traps with buying Overlanding gear and vehicles. I'll walk you through the importance of deciding what type of trips you're going to take, which vehicle you want to build out, and then how much comfort and convenience you want in your build. I'll give you some real world numbers based on my experience so you can get a better idea of the true cost of Overlanding. Check out the full episode for all the info! Solar Power 101: Overlanding Basics (Types of Solar Panels, How it Works, Uses for Overlanders)

3/3/2024
In this week's episode of the podcast, I'm going to run you through the basics of solar power and it's uses for overlanding. I see people asking lots of questions in overlanding and camping groups and forums, so while I'm no electrician, I've been using solar for the last 4 or 5 years and I've learned a lot. I was in the same place as a lot of us 5 years ago where solar seemed really intimidating and scary, but once I got into it, it's really pretty straightforward and there are so many valuable uses that it's a powerful tool for your overlanding build. As I mention in the video, here are a couple of helpful links to related articles that may help if you're getting started in solar. Mono vs. Poly: Solar Cells Comparison: https://sunvivalguide.com/amorphous-vs-monocrystalline-vs-polycrystalline-solar-panel/ Solar calculator: https://mowgli-adventures.com/rv-solar-calculator/ And here are some of the solar products I've used over the years that I liked: The first 100W Renogy Solar panel with controller that I ran on my Xterra ($130 and includes panel, controller, and cords): https://amzn.to/42YED7p Odyssey AGM Starter battery (ran this in both my Xterra and again in my Frontier-if you're not in a Nissan truck, verify the battery size for your application): https://amzn.to/3SYXnyP I built a portable power bank on the cheap using this battery (100AH LifePo4): https://amzn.to/3T0a9gC And I put that battery in a pre-made battery box for tons of capacity for around $300 total: https://amzn.to/3Ifwpyj If you have a solar panel, but want a decent budget controller to allow you to hook it up to a battery, this one is great and it's $18: https://amzn.to/3P0oQzh Or, if you want a better MPPT controller, this one is under $70 and has bluetooth connectivity and a phone app: https://amzn.to/3TdyZuK Here's that Allpowers power bank and it comes with a 200 watt flexible panel (I'm going to mount mine to the top of my RTT for about $500 total including the power bank and the solar panel): https://amzn.to/49Tkfqi

Nissan's 2024 Patents - Passthrough, Modular Truck Bed, Is This Potentially The New Xterra?!

2/11/2024
In today's episode of the podcast, I wanted to make something that's hopefully interesting for everyone, but especially my Nissan folks. Nissan applied for some patents in early January of 2024 for a passthrough from a truck cab into the truck bed as well as essentially a bed rack with removable top, sides, and rear panels. I originally saw the article on this website if you want to check out the whole thing: https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2024/01/soft-top-with-a-pass-through-next-gen-nissan-frontier-patent-is-wild/ So, in today's episode, I'm going to talk about how Nissan has always been weird and quirky and come up with some pretty cool, unique ideas. I'll also talk about the patents themselves and show them to you and describe them for those listening to the podcast. Finally, I'll finish up with my thoughts on what these could actually mean and whether I think it's a good idea or not. Beyond the Hype: Has Overlanding Hit Its Peak?

2/4/2024
In this week's episode of the podcast, I saw an article (link: https://www.ordealist.com/overlanding-statistics/) that talks about the Overlanding trend being on the decline. It sights some interesting stats from Google search volume, Overland Expo attendance, and more to make its case. In this episode, I'm going to talk through that, my interpretation of the data, some trends I've seen, and my final thoughts on what I think is happening with Overlanding. Is it becoming less popular or is something else at play in the data? Check out the full episode for all the info and hop over to All Things Overlanding on other social channels (links below) to join the conversation! The Truth Behind Gear Reviews on YouTube: Can They Be Trusted? (And What to Look Out For)

1/28/2024
In this episode of the podcast, I wanted to tackle the topic of YouTubers and gear reviews head on. As a channel that does quite a few gear videos, it's something I see a lot in comments on my videos, in Facebook groups, and pretty much everywhere. Can you trust YouTubers when they talk about gear? Watch the full video for all the info, but let me just say that if you pay attention, you'll notice that I very seldom call anything a "gear review." To me, a gear review is something that is based on using a product in a variety of conditions for a long period of time. Also, if there's any bias (such as a free product given by a manufacturer to the content creator in exchange for the work it takes to create the video) there will always be inherent bias. Instead of doing "gear reviews" on this channel, I focus more on sharing cool gear ideas with people, helping you see it in action, sharing things like how to assemble or use a piece of gear, and then usually finish up with my ideas for how I'm going to integrate that gear into my set up. I think there's value in that and I personally often go to YouTube just to learn more and see different gear "in the hands" of someone else. Hopefully you guys get value out of those videos too! The Downfall of Overlanding: How Social Media Changed Everything

1/21/2024
In this episode of the podcast, I wanted to talk about something that has been bothering me for a while. Sure, I'll probably get some hate in the comments for this, but those are exactly the people I don't care about. Most people act like they know everything and that there's only one way to build an overlanding rig, or use a dual battery system, or when solar is the right option, but the real answer is that there are a million variables and everyone's set up will be different. So, will you be a negative influence in the space? Trying to make yourself feel better about your set up while diminishing others in a vain attempt to feel superior? Or, will you help me grow the love of Overlanding and dispersed camping while supporting and educating folks just trying to get into the hobby? The choice is yours, but watch the episode before commenting below. Thanks for watching and, as always, thanks for trying to be a positive force in the Overlanding community!
