118: Addressing Thyroid and Hormone Root Cause w/ Gillis Pellegrin

4/14/2024
WOW WOW WOW.....In this episode, Jim and Aram interview Gillis Pellegrin, a functional nutrition coach and hormone expert. They discuss the importance of addressing hormone dysfunction, particularly in women, and the role of lifestyle factors in thyroid health. Takeaways Hormone dysfunction, particularly in women, is an important issue that needs to be addressed. A comprehensive approach that includes proper nutrition, resistance training, and addressing underlying issues is crucial for thyroid health. A full thyroid panel, including TSH, T4, T3, reverse T3, and thyroid antibodies, is necessary to assess thyroid function. Getting blood work done through a practitioner account with Evexia Diagnostics is a recommended option for comprehensive testing. Levothyroxine (Synthroid) is a common thyroid medication, but there are other options available, such as desiccated thyroid tissue. The conversion of T4 to T3 primarily occurs in the liver, so it's important to support liver health for optimal thyroid function. Sleep hygiene, including establishing a consistent sleep routine and avoiding technology before bed, is crucial for overall health and hormone balance. Estrogen dominance can impact thyroid function, as excess estrogen can raise thyroid binding globulin (TBG) levels and affect the availability of thyroid hormones. Shift workers face unique challenges in maintaining circadian rhythm and hormone balance, but prioritizing sleep quality and meal timing can help mitigate some of these issues. Menopause is typically defined as the absence of menstruation for 12 consecutive months, but other factors like anti-mullerian hormone (AMH) levels can provide insight into ovarian reserve and the transition to menopause. Hormonal changes during midlife, such as declining estrogen and increased androgens, can lead to fat redistribution and insulin resistance in women. Despite hormonal changes, women can still achieve fat loss and improve body composition through proper nutrition and training. Individualized approaches and setting realistic expectations are crucial for success in fat loss during midlife. Blood work analysis and coaching services can provide valuable support for women navigating hormonal changes and achieving their goals. Client autonomy and understanding are important, and coaches should allow clients to make autonomous decisions and learn at their own pace. Balancing technical jargon and client understanding is essential, and coaches should use language that is accessible and relatable to clients. Group fitness models should have a clear plan and allow for flexibility and autonomy for clients to meet their individual needs. 113. Effective Training Principles and More w/ Alex Bush

3/14/2024
This week with Alex Bush: Focus on the key principles of training, such as proper form and technique, rather than getting caught up in minor details. Hypertrophy training is beneficial for individuals of all backgrounds and goals, not just bodybuilders. Patience is crucial in training and nutrition, as results take time to manifest. The gym should be seen as a place to build up the body rather than just burn calories. Individualization is key in training and nutrition, considering factors such as body structure and exercise execution. Short-form content on social media can be contradictory and lack context, making it challenging for consumers to navigate fitness advice. Coaches should prioritize serving their customer base and providing individualized guidance, rather than seeking validation from other coaches. Home gyms can be convenient, but commercial gyms offer a better environment for hypertrophy purposes and variety of equipment. When it comes to nutrition, tracking food intake and prioritizing protein are key for achieving fitness goals. Recommended supplements include magnesium, vitamin D, and fish oil, but individual needs may vary. Low-fat diets can be challenging and may require careful tracking and monitoring of fat intake. Extreme dieting and restrictive eating practices are not necessary or healthy for the majority of people. Eggs are a good source of micronutrients but should not be relied upon as the sole protein source due to their high fat content. The 'What I Eat in a Day' trend can be misleading and may not be applicable to everyone's dietary needs and preferences. Instead of focusing on exact macros, it is more helpful to use recipes as inspiration and learn how to combine different food sources. Following someone else's diet without considering individual differences and preferences may lead to dissatisfaction and lack of results. Excuses and results are mutually exclusive - to achieve desired outcomes, one must take responsibility and take action.
