Episode 43 - Dr Jes DeShields

1/17/2024
For the past 25 years, Dr. Jes DeShields has studied, evaluated, and applied models of leadership, organizational behaviour, and systems change across multiple sectors. From Fortune 250 and privately-owned companies to local, national, and global non-profits to entire communities, Jes’s work has ranged from preparing leaders to successfully run their organizations to improving the trajectory of organizations in crisis and those poised for growth to executing system-wide responses to existential threats, such as competition, and most recently, the pandemic. While writing her dissertation, Jes was told, “Just put pen to paper! It doesn’t have to become your life’s work.” And yet, the conceptual framework of Jes’s original research manifests daily in her work with Leaders, Teams, and Organizations. Elements of an environment reciprocally influence each other, creating a reinforcing context. The reciprocal influence and reinforcing context breed conditions for evolving and convoluted organizational problems. A Leader’s role in untangling or further tangling these issues is inevitable. How people lead and the type of culture they perpetuate has the most profound impact on how effectively they can untangle the system. Jes founded Crescent Leadership, a business consulting and executive coaching firm based on Leader-First® strategies, her distinct methodology for organizational change. Leader-First® strategies challenge leaders and teams of leaders first to examine how their action or inaction reinforces conditions for enduring growth and vitality or stagnation and decline. Jes’s essential research was published in her book, '9 Leader Touchstones', which hit shelves earlier this year. Known as a passionate and engaging storyteller, Jes cultivates client relationships of transparency, trust, and authentic connection. Her consulting approach focuses on the long game, applying the appropriate infusion of innovation with endurance-based strategies and conscientious culture mapping. Prior to launching Crescent Leadership, Jes led the Leadership Consulting team for Girl Scouts of the USA. She and her team served as thought partners and consultants to CEOs across the 50 states, their senior team members, and their Boards, where they navigated dynamic and frenetic operational environments daily. Jes earned her Ph.D. in Management - Leadership and Organizational Change - in 2014. She currently teaches at Cornell in Executive Leadership, Women’s Leadership, Change Leadership, and Non-profit Management Certificate programs and is a Lecturer at The Brooks School of Public Policy. She is one of 98 Fascinate® Certified Advisors, one of 6,300 Certified Fund-Raising Executives worldwide, and has Certificates in Leading Remote Teams, Non-profit Finance, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Jes regularly speaks and writes on the topics of leadership, team dynamics, and organizational change. While she is zealous about leadership, equity, and causes related to self-sustainability and women, Jes’s first love is family. She and her husband, Dr. Brian DeShields, live in Greenville, South Carolina, with their daughters, Madeleine and Emily, and their furry companions Amos, Atlas, and Archer, where they regularly fulfil their curiosity and passion for adventure. Episode 36 - Dr Jillian Rigert

9/27/2023
Dr Jillian Rigert has doctorate degrees in dentistry and medicine with a specialty in oral medicine. She is an Air Force veteran, a postdoctoral research fellow in Radiation Oncology, and Certified Life and Professional Leadership Coach. Through coaching and her YouTube channel (‘A Life True to You’), Jillian’s mission is to help people discover or rediscover what it means to create a life true to themselves - free from societal pressures that lead them astray. Outside of work, she loves to spend time with her dog, Reese, and is an avid runner. Jillian started her career by fast tracking into a dental school and dedicating herself to becoming an Air Force oral and maxillofacial surgeon. A “leader” to her at that time meant chasing high achievements, doing the hardest job we could possibly do, pushing ourselves to the limits mentally and physically, being confident and taking on formal leadership titles including her roles as an Air Force officer and surgeon trainee. In 2014-2017, her perspective started to unravel. Sleep deprivation, self-doubt, under-nourishment and exhaustion from constantly pushing herself to the limits led to serious illness which nearly cost her life. Her experience helped her to see how societal values often lead us astray from what truly matters in life and altered her perspective on what it means to be a leader. Now, being a leader to Jillian includes living with integrity, in alignment with your core values, advocating for what we believe is right, and creating a psychologically safe environment for others to do the same. A leader lives it to give it - in other words “walks the talk.” Jillian believes that learning how to be leaders of our own lives is a great and important first step in learning how to be a leader for others in a way that’s authentic and sustainable. Episode 32 - Saj Zafar

8/2/2023
Saj Zafar is a Leadership Trainer, Motivational Speaker, Author and an accredited Personal and Professional Development Coach. She is also the founder of 'Institute for Change', a specialist training and coaching consultancy which primarily focuses on helping organisations create inclusive cultures. Having spent a lifetime overcoming barriers, defying many gender roles and stereotypes, and achieving many firsts, Saj delivers her training and coaching programs to a diverse range of organisations, specialising in helping and supporting senior leaders to get the best out of their workforce. Qualifying in Social Work and graduating in Forensic Psychology, it is no surprise that at the tender age of 24 Saj ended up in prison. One of her ‘claims to fame’ is being the first and youngest Asian female to join the Prison Service as a Prison Governor. Not surprisingly, the very things that helped catapult her to success (young, Asian and female), became her challenges as she strived to thrive in a predominantly white male environment. Her 'can do' mind set, attitude, and resilience, led her to spend the next 20 years working in challenging areas in both local and central government. Setting up the first therapeutic unit for young sex offenders in the UK, leading on transformational change programs in failing institutions, working for the Prison and Probation Ombudsman, Prison Reform, and Public Protection, led her to build an exemplary reputation in strategic leadership working effectively with senior leadership teams, including Ministers and senior officials in both local and central governments. It is these credentials that led to her appointment as the Ministerial Engagement Lead for Grenfell and subsequently the Wind Rush Program. She is a renowned authority in Leadership Development & Organisational Change. She has a professional credibility with a proven track record of leading, shaping and influencing large, complex change programmes within regulated environments. It is her ability to create safe psychological spaces and have candid and courageous conversations, that has made her the ‘go to’ person for gender and race equality. Saj uses her experiences and weaves these into her training/coaching/mentoring to make learning interesting, impactful and of value for the participants. Her own experience of working in ‘all male’ environments as the only female leader and managing those relationships, regardless of the treatment she received, has made her one of the leaders in helping organisations change the demographics of the top tier.
