Being Too Comfortable

4/30/2024
Consistency is a good thing, right? But what if you are being consistent just for the sake of consistency, and you lose sight of your real goal? For example, Ramona recently realized that she consistently went to the gym because she focused on being consistent. However, she got comfortable with the routine and lost sight of the real goal: gaining more strength and improving her endurance. Of course, consistency helps, but that alone won't get her there. What matters just as much, if not more, is that she keeps challenging herself with the workouts, measuring her improvements, and pivoting if needed, etc. Don't worry. This is not an episode about working out. There is a clear parallel to our leadership growth. As leaders, we often value consistency and reliability and that's a good thing. But I assume we'd all agree that there is a lot more to leadership than just being consistent. In this episode, Ramona gives examples of how getting into a consistent routine can lead to times when we get too comfortable and stall our growth. If you are looking to grow your leadership skills or notice you've been doing the same thing for a long time, then this episode is for you. Check it out HERE. When our Minds Trick Us Into Ineffective Leadership - Interview with Cayla Horey

4/16/2024
Daring to sound cliché... but I'm pretty sure you've heard phrases like, "Think about what you are thinking about," and "Our thoughts become our beliefs, and our beliefs become our action." But have you ever had someone call out your mental blind spots? Do you know what mental traps might be impacting your effectiveness as a leader? Would you be able to recognize them yourself? In this episode, Ramona and her guest and fellow Leadership Coach, Cayla Horey share examples of situations when a leader's internal dialogue was about to trip them up but a coaching conversation cleared the path for a more effective leadership experience. Cayla explains that our brains offer us constant streams of thoughts, and we have a natural tendency to simply accept and believe those thoughts as truth. However, these unchallenged narratives can lead us down unproductive paths, causing us to make decisions or take actions that can ultimately hurt our teams and organizations. This episode demonstrates how replacing limiting mindsets with more empowering ones that are as equally true, can unlock dramatically better outcomes for you as a leader. If you are interested in developing a keen sense of self-awareness and identifying mental blind spots then this episode is for you. Check it out here. Letting Someone Go

3/26/2024
Imagine that sinking feeling when you realize you may have to let someone go from your team. It's one of the most difficult situations a manager faces. In most cases, the manager has been feeling this tugging going on for a while but has put it off, hoping that things would improve. But at some point they have to face the inevitable. What's worse, if they were the one that hired this employee, they may also be struggling with guilt, feeling at-fault for how the situation turned out. In this episode, Ramona provides guidance on how to approach the process of letting someone go with clarity and compassion. She brings up key questions to ask yourself to assess if termination is warranted and introduces you to the AMO framework to help identify gaps that may be hindering the employee's performance. Even if termination is the ultimate outcome, there are ways that it can be done with clarity and compassion for everyone involved, including the remaining team members. If you've been grappling with an underperforming employee or want to prepare for when (not if!) this situation will arise for you, then you must tune in to this episode. Check it out here. Current-Day Lessons from Historical Leaders - with Moshik Temkin

3/19/2024
Do great leaders make history, or does history make great leaders? Whether it’s a political upheaval like what Napoleon faced, an economic depression as with Roosevelt, or a company facing an existential challenge, great leaders have historically grasped these moments as opportunities for significant change. In fact, the desire to bring about positive change and make a difference is a common thread among all outstanding leaders. But while studying successful leaders offers valuable lessons, learning from past failures can be equally insightful. In this episode, Ramona and guest, Moshik Temkin, have a captivating conversation full of engaging stories about historical leaders, both the successful and some very unsuccessful events that have shaped the world we live in today. Moshik is recognized as a distinguished professor who has significantly contributed to the fields of leadership and history. His expertise has led to teaching positions at reputable institutions, including Harvard. Temkin's scholarly essays and articles have garnered attention in esteemed publications including The New York Times, The Nation, Journal of Democracy, The New Republic, and the Los Angeles Times. His recent book, Warriors, Rebels, and Saints: The Art of Leadership from Machiavelli to Malcolm X, is a comprehensive examination of historical leadership that has been praised for its depth and insight into the journeys of past leaders. One of our favorite quotes from the show: "I think what they had in common is that they spoke their truth. They were not concerned with whether people liked them or not. In fact, they understood that sometimes, and this might not be a pleasant thing to say, but sometimes, really, transformational leadership means that you are going to alienate people, some people, and you are going to create enemies. And Franklin Roosevelt himself said to the American people, he said, I want you to judge me by the enemies that I have made." Check it out here. Better Listening - What It Actually Means

3/5/2024
Can you recall that last conversation you had with someone when you noticed they weren't fully present with you and giving you their fullest attention? Maybe they checked their phones every so often, maybe they were watching people walking by, or they were more interested telling you about their own experiences rather than trying to really hear and understand what you were trying to communicate. How did you feel in that conversation? Chances are high that it seemed high-level, not very meaningful, or even a waste of time. Listening well is a skill most of us have to learn as an adult and while it sounds easy enough, for many of us it is actually hard to do and filled with unconscious pitfalls. Being a better listener can lead to significant positive outcomes for you, your team, and your organization. Not only does it demonstrate empathy and help to build trust but it also plays an important role in understanding various perspectives which can lead to making better, more informed decisions. In this episode, Ramona will fill you in on the most common barriers to active listening, some of which you've probably not thought of before. She will also provide practical advice that will help you navigate challenging situations by fully engaging with the people involved and getting to the root cause of the issues at hand. Copycat Leadership

2/6/2024
The allure of success and influence isn't just something that happens with the latest viral post. It can also happen when new managers try to mimic the behaviors of respected and influential figures in their organization. Understandably so. New managers want to establish themselves as credible and effective leaders and may naturally feel inclined to embody similar traits, communication styles, decision-making methods, and other leadership tactics as their role models. However, mirroring another leader's style without comprehending the underlying principles and motivations can quickly backfire. If you've ever found yourself picking up another leader's behavior, this episode is a must-listen. Changing Behaviors & Achieving Goals

1/30/2024
"Quitter's Day." No, it's not the day that a person quits their job. It's the second Friday in January, designated as the day when most people are likely to give up on their New Year's resolution (unofficially, of course). Change, no matter how big or small can be difficult because our brains are wired to seek established patterns of consistency. I'm sure you can easily recall that feeling of discomfort when you've tried doing something new in the past. Maybe you wanted to get better at delegating work and you leaned into it. But seconds later you felt like you made a mistake and should take that task right back. This feeling of discomfort is normal but when left unmanaged can result in a pattern of backsliding into old comfortable ways. However, there are ways to create a positive feedback loop that fuels continued growth and self-improvement. If you are looking for a blueprint to help you break through your old behaviors and achieve new goals then this episode is for you. Leveraging Emotions

1/23/2024
Do you ever feel like your emotions are running the show? As leaders, we often struggle with the pressure to keep things bottled up and be "professional." But what if there was actually a benefit in embracing your emotions, both good and bad? In this episode of The Manager Track podcast, Ramona proposes that there is a way to leverage those emotions to create positive outcomes. As a leader, understanding and expressing emotions authentically (yet still managed), whether positive or negative, can influence and inspire others. The same can be said for your team members as well. By engaging with team members about their feelings and emotions, you can create a supportive and constructive environment. If you are looking for tips on leveraging the power of emotions for your team, don't miss this episode. Coachability

1/16/2024
In this week's episode of the Manager Track podcast, host Ramona Shaw delves into the intriguing subject of coachability and its crucial role in personal and professional development. She begins by setting the stage with a helpful overview of what coaching conversations entail and then unpacks the four pivotal aspects of coachability: self-reflection, openness to feedback, action-taking, and self-accountability. A question to consider: When something happens, do you think outward of what were the circumstances or what were other people doing? Or are you self-reflecting and considering what you chose to do or not to do? Re-Release: Is Your Thinking Helping or Hurting You

12/26/2023
This is a re-release of one of the most popular episodes of The Manager Track podcast. If you've ever struggled with analysis paralysis, overthinking, or just plain 'ol stinkin' thinkin' then this episode is for you. When we think something over and over again, our thoughts quickly become patterns and those patterns then turn into beliefs. Now beliefs can either be positive beliefs (things that will actually help us and support us and make us feel more confident and be more effective), or they can be negative beliefs that can make us doubt ourselves, be less effective, and fail to create the results that we really want. The problem is that they’re not that easy to uncover. In this episode, I’m sharing the 6 most common thinking patterns that many of us have running around in our minds, whether consciously or unconsciously.
