#31 - Beyond the Scene: Fanedits with Bobson Dugnutt

10/9/2023
Everyone loves themselves a good movie, just like a good realtime-rendered scene - and as we do with the latter, some people take their passion obscenely far in making their favourite movies the best they can be. We talk with Bobson Dugnutt about fanedits, a small scene that might seem familiar in all but its final products. #29 - Gimmicks and Satire in Demos with jco

4/4/2023
Whether it is to divert expectations, provoke, bend the rules or simply have a good time and be creative: humour, satire and gimmicks are a long-standing tradition in the demoscene. But is there more to it than just blatant knee-slappers and cheap audience-pleasing? Does humour free oneself from too many expectations and limitations? Or is it limiting in its own ways? With the topic so close to his own heart, okkie chats with jco, who has been leaving audiences somewhere between laughing and confused about story-driven productions with characters such as Kevin and Evilbot, all while also developing impressive tool chains and technologically apt productions that don't have to hide behind the absurdity... or do they? #27 - Bonfire Special: Competitions with Kiero and Hoffman

11/15/2022
After long summer nights, it's getting cold outside again and the demoparty calendar gets sparser. In this special, we invite two guests to discuss a topic intimately, as you might catch the conversation close to a bonfire after a good compo night: Our two guests hardly need an introduction - Kiero (MadWizards, Elude) and H0ffman (Logicoma, Unstable Label) share their experiences, feelings and anecdotes about competitions. Do they release for the fun of it, or to win? Do they still get compo jitters? Do they ever feel dissatisfied with a production? Is our voting system fair? Do they namevote? And how do they work towards that moment, when their prod is finally shown at the bigscreen? #26 - A Dive Into the Scene’s Psychology with Tom

10/14/2022
Welcome to our biggest episode yet! We can all agree sceners are a peculiar bunch, and our scene is a community like no other, juggling creativity and technical prowess, often even within the same individuals. What does it do with us to create, compete and socialise in this environment, and how can we take care of our own and others’ wellbeing? We explore the psychology behind the demoscene, demoparties and demomaking with Tom, who does not just create amazing Atari-demos with Genesis Project, Effect and SMFX, but also lectures on Community Psychology at the University of Leeds. We appreciate that even two hours can’t do justice to all angles of this complex topic. If you would like to share your thoughts, stories and questions, send them to zineradioshow@scene.org or to our social media accounts. If you are interested and we receive enough feedback, we might produce a follow-up in the future. **Disclaimer**: If you are in distress or have a medical emergency, please seek out professional help immediately: https://findahelpline.com/ Links in the episode: Back In Time, Bergen: https://backintime.no/ TRSAC Demoparty, Denmark: http://trsac.dk/ Demoscene Discord: https://discord.gg/76nuRVzqS3 Sommarhack Party: https://dhs.nu/sommarhack/2022/ Tom on Demozoo: https://demozoo.org/sceners/73804/ Credits: Hosts: Axel, Okkie, Ziphoid Producer: Shana Editing and Sound Engineering: lug00ber Cover Art: Critikill

#23 - For Easter is a Sceners Christmas with Steeler

4/12/2022
25 years ago in Northern Germany, an Amiga/C64 demoparty called "Symposium" and a PC demoparty called "Mekka" decided to merge into one common demoscene event on Easter, bringing the home computer and PC demoscene under one roof - Something almost unthinkable at the time. This was the beginning of a tradition that was eventually carried on by Breakpoint and resulted in Revision, the world's biggest pure demoparty. Ah, the kids we were...! But wait, what about kids today? In the second half of the episode, we explore how kids perceive the digital world today, how they enter it, concepts and pitfalls of current media education, and if the demoscene can still be relevant for this generation. So what better time of the year to invite Steeler, orga of Mekka & Symposium as well as a media education advisor these days, looking all the way from the 1980s and compare it to the next generation's approach to creativity and tinkering. Lean back and get ready for a MASSIVE episode! #22 - Beyond the Scene: Algoraves with Alex McLean

3/8/2022
For the first time in a long while, we are venturing beyond our own realms, and invite a guest from a scene not so different from ours: We have a chat with Alex McLean, a key figure of the Algorave movement, about the similarities and differences of our scenes and creative process. Let's see if we can draw some inspiration from each other! Algoraves have been an ever-growing trend over the past ten years, in which musicians livecode their music to please the dancing masses. Also, we chat about the Revision Satellites, share some exclusive insights into the survey they held earlier in the year, and reflect on Lovebyte that just happened prior to recording (and get Okkie to say "...in DOOOOOS" one more time.) Also, we finally get an answer to okkie’s burning question on the origins of TPOLM’s group name and wallow in memories of a time where we were not only immature teenagers, but also produced some awesome diskmags. #18 Themed music compos, IQ talks Shadertoy

11/30/2021
We kick off this month with an audience question: Are themed music compos a net positive or net negative? Is there a loss of interest in music compos in general? After that, a discussion about demos using stock assets and commercial engines - is it worth it? Should it be shunned upon? Finally, the legend himself, IQ joins us to tell us the story and beginnings of Shadertoy, how he views the growth of the site and what makes it special, and retells some parts of his stellar career, how his beginnings in the scene allowed him to have it, and his views on the direction of the scene. #16 Even nostalgia isn't the same anymore

10/5/2021
The scene is nothing if not a giant ball of sobbing about how everything was better when computers were just growing their eighth bit - but is that a good thing? Are we taking up the space from the future with the past? What's better, to make a fresh demo on an old platform, or an old demo on a fresh platform? The show dives into these weighty questions while, naturally, reminiscing about old times, because of course. #15 The joy of livecoding - with Flopine

8/24/2021
There's just no denying it: over the last few years the livecoding craze took the demoscene by storm - but what is it? Is it part of the scene? How does it project onto the scene? Where does it meet the scene and where does it avoid it? We sit down with Flopine, the perhaps most prominent personality of the livecoding community, to gain more understanding of what it is and what it isn't, and what her experiences are in the field. #14 No, really - why DO people make demos?

7/30/2021
Most of us have been in the scene for a decade or more - so much that it's become second nature. But in 2021, with the massive reach of social media and various other computer art outlets gaining popularity - why would anyone else start making demos? #13 Is the scene’s online presence sustainable?

7/1/2021
The turn of the millennium pushed the demoscene to cover a lot of online ground, but now 20 years later modern Internet habits and centralization is putting undue pressure on the actively used websites, while other sites just wither out once the maintainers leave.
