Buying Classic Cars – Different Eras, Problems, and Tech!

3/1/2024
Tim and Kyle talk about buying cool/collectible cars from the classic (pre-1980), RADwood (1980-1999), and modern eras. Cars built prior to 1980 are a different world, and their unique age, technology, and histories mean even two examples of the same model can be vastly different. Kyle recounts bad experiences from buying a rolling wreck of a 1950s Jaguar, and Tim recalls the pitfalls of letting a 13 year-old trailer an old Volkswagen Beetle back to the house. Corrosion, originality, access to parts and knowledge, and robust pre-purchase inspections are key factors to ensure success. “RADwood” cars of the 80s and 90s offer the conveniences of modern systems and performance, but the huge range of dead-end engine electronics, early two-stage paint treatments, abundance of perishable plastic trim, and aging computers demand a careful inspection and model-specific research to match. We end with modern cars, which are easy to buy! Go factory certified pre-owned, get an AAA extended warranty, or score a late model still under factory warranty.

What is a classic car? What is an antique car? Tim and Kyle investigate with input from classic car insurance companies, Autotrader, and our own experience burning countless dollars on old cars. The team also tackles “birth year” cars and our favorites from Kyle (1989) and Tim (1984). Our only rule is that the car must have been available for sale as a new automobile during those birth years; Buick’s Reatta, Audi’s Sport Quattro, and the Cadillac Eldorado Convertible feature prominently!
