Residency Series Part III: In this week's episode, Maggie and Cara are joined by Dr. Evan Hansen to discuss how his residency and fellowship training impacted his career. Dr. Hansen discusses his passion for the treatment of the running athlete and shares progress on bringing his running expertise to his current practice at HonorHealth. Throughout the episode, Dr. Hansen also shares valuable "hot takes" regarding controversial topics in the PT profession, and even shares his knowledge about the world of whiskey cocktails. Evan Hansen, PT, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT Dr. Evan Hansen graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Science and Health Sciences as well as his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Creighton University in 2013. He then completed Creighton’s orthopedic residency program where he earned his Board Certification in Orthopedics (OCS) and published research utilizing hand-held dynamometry. After residency he went on to complete a fellowship in manual therapy in San Antonio through The Manual Therapy Institute in 2018. He is member of the APTA and American Academy of Orthopedic and Manual Physical Therapists (AAOMPT). Prior to moving to Phoenix in 2019 to work for HonorHealth, he served as Clinical Mentor for Creighton University’s Orthopedic Residency Program. Evan also serves as adjunct faculty for Creighton University’s Doctor of Physical Therapy program in Phoenix. Clinically, Evan utilizes an eclectic combination of manual therapy and movement system impairment model to diagnose and treat complex patient presentations. He also has an interest in pain neuroscience education and treatment of runners utilizing gait analysis and retraining.

The three discuss work-life balance with a family, terminal degrees in the field, interprofessional education, and why taking a chance on your career may be worth it. Kimberly Beran-Shepler, PT, DPT, OCS Kimberly is a 2006 graduate of Creighton University's DPT program and a 2007 graduate of Creighton University’s Orthopedic PT Residency. She is a Board Certified Specialist in Orthopedics and serves on the Accreditation Services Committee for the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education (ABPTRFE). Kimberly is a Distinguished Scholarship Fellow in the National Academies of Practice (NAP) where she is serving as the co-chair for the communication committee. She is also a second-term secretary for the National Interprofessional education consortium (NIPEC). Kimberly began her career as an outpatient orthopedic physical therapist in the Denver area. She practiced and managed a private practice clinic for about 7 years before making the switch to academia. She began her academic career at Trine University in northeast Indiana where she served as as a full-time faculty member and the founding Director of Clinical education. In 2017, Kimberly was offered a teaching position at Creighton University and has been there ever since. Currently, she teaches upper extremity musculoskeletal courses, serves on the clinical education team, and coordinates the orthopedic residency. In addition, she is the Interprofessional Education (IPE) Passport Director, which is the IPE curriculum for all Creighton Health Science learners. Kimberly and her husband, Dustin, have two sons: Grayson who is 9 and Jaxson who is 6 years old.

In this unique episode of PT POV, Maggie, Cara, and Carley are joined by Dr. Jaclyn Baratono to discuss reproductive rights in light of the new Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe vs Wade. Dr. Baratono and your hosts discuss how restricting access to abortion impacts all women, as well as our health care provider's ability to safely and ethically care for patients. Dr. Jaclyn Baratono, DO Dr. Baratono is a board-certified OB/GYN from Troy, MI. She attended Michigan State University for both her undergraduate education and Medical School. During medical school, she was the Vice President of the student-led organization "Medical Students for Choice (MSFC)". Dr. Baratono completed her 4-year OB/GYN Residency at Beaumont Health System in Southeast Michigan and she is currently continuing her training by completing a 3-year fellowship program in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (FPMRS).

Welcome to Part I of our residency series! Maggie, Carley, and Cara and joined today by Dr. Joe DeHope and Dr. Dylan Bassett to discuss their post-residency experiences and opportunities. The five friends discuss many topics related to professional life post-residency and offer advice to those considering residency training. Meet our guests: Joe DeHope, PT, DPT, MS, OCS, CSCS Joe DeHope completed his master’s degree in Sport Psychology and Motor Behavior from the University of Tennessee in 2013, Doctorate of Physical Therapy from South College (Knoxville, TN) in 2019, and Orthopedic Residency from Creighton University (Omaha, NE) in 2020. Joe received his Orthopedic Clinical Specialty in the spring of 2021. He currently serves as the embedded physical therapist for an Air Force Special Warfare unit in Colorado Springs as a civilian contractor. Joe also serves as adjunct faculty for the South College DPT program. With a background in strength and conditioning, Joe's passion lies in attempting to create an ideal environment for both tissue adaptation and skill development (whether rehabilitative or performance based) through optimal loading and intentional coaching cues to maximize motor learning. Dylan Bassett, PT, DPT, OCS, CSCS Dylan Bassett received his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City in 2019. He then went on to complete orthopedic residency at Creighton University and received his Orthopedic Clinical Specialty in the spring of 2021. Following completion of residency, Dylan moved back to Kansas City where he now practices at a hospital-based outpatient clinic and teaches anatomy within the DPT program at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Outside of the clinic, Dylan enjoys learning handyman work around his house and building his own home gym.

2. Life in Academia with Dr. Michelle Reilly

Maggie, Cara, and Carley are joined by Dr. Michelle Reilly to discuss her career and the pros/cons of academic life. Michelle Reilly, PT, DPT, OCS Dr. Reilly received her DPT from Creighton University in 2008. She completed the residency in orthopedic physical therapy at Creighton in 2009 and received her orthopedic specialization in 2010 and recertification in 2020. She has over 12 years of experience in outpatient orthopedics with a niche practice in the treatment of performing artists. She has been the physical therapist for American Midwest Ballet, Ballet Nebraska and Omaha Ballet Theater and provides backstage physical therapy services to various productions in the Omaha area. Michelle started her career in academia in 2009 at Clarkson College, teaching in their physical therapist assistant program before moving to Creighton in 2017. At Creighton, her teaching responsibilities include Patient Management, Differential Diagnosis, and Musculoskeletal content as well as emphasis on the physical therapist’s role in prevention and wellness. She serves as the curriculum committee chair for the entry level curriculum and is a member of the clinical education team at Creighton. Her scholarly agenda focuses on the teaching and learning of clinical reasoning as well as the physical therapy treatment of performing artists. She has presented nationally on these topics.
