She shares her advice on how to take control of your oral health, gain a healthy mouth and ultimately improve general well being. Her fascinating story shares a perspective on the importance of dental hygienists and educating patients about oral health.

Welcome back to the Eastman Dental Podcast! In this mini-series, we're delving into real patient experiences to help dental professionals gain an insight from a different angle. In Episode 1, we hear the amazing story of a patient diagnosed with Tongue Cancer at only 32. Barbara Fountain shares her journey through diagnosis and treatment and how tongue cancer has affected her life. Barbara is now the CEO & Founder of the Young Tongues, a global peer support group for young people diagnosed with Tongue Cancer.

Leaving the bustling city of Birmingham to the quiet aisle of Lewes to study Dental Therapy at the University of the Highlands and Islands was just the start of a 7-year journey for this week’s guest. Jyoti Sumel qualified in 2016 and has since achieved a vast amount in her short career so far. After working in primary care, she moved into community care to utilise full scope of practice and provide support and care to more vulnerable patients. She is amongst the first DCPs to participate in HEEs Clinical Fellowship Scheme. Watch out for this dental therapy leader!

This week on The Eastman Dental Podcast, we have EDHECs very own Marie Parker! Marie is the Deputy Programme Director of Hygiene & Therapy at the Eastman Dental Hospital. Having completed her master’s in education, she is a true advocate for dental education and training. Marie’s impressive journey includes becoming the youngest Chair of the NEBDN, examiner for dental nurse qualifications and Co-Chair of the Dental Apprenticeships Forum. This week, Josh and Julia are joined by the previous Postgraduate Dental Dean for London and Kent, Surrey and Sussex, Peter Briggs. Peter discusses his educational journey through dental school and how he has built his career since qualifying. He has authored or co-authored over 70 peer-reviewed publications and has taught and lectured at many national and international groups throughout his career. This week on The Eastman Dental Podcast we are joined by Orthodontic Technician, James Green. James works between NHS Trusts who run the North Thames Regional Cleft Lip and Palate service, creating dental appliances. James is well published in the field and has been a part of the Orthodontic Technicians Association throughout his career. He has recently been awarded for an Outstanding contribution to the Field of Orthodontic Technology.

This week Josh and Julia chat with Dr Debbie Reed. Debbie, who started off in the Royal Navy, discusses the educational journey that helped her develop her career as a dental nurse. She is now a Reader at the University of Kent, has researched and contributed to many publications, and in 2021 received the Janet Goodwin Dental Care Professional Award from the Royal College of Surgeons Faculty of General Dental Practice. This week on The Eastman Dental Podcast, Communications Director for Dentaid The Dental Charity, Jill Harding, joins us. Jill shares the inspirational starting story of the charity from providing dental equipment to Ukrainian prisons to delivering entire dental practices in a wheelie bin to dentists in the remotest areas! Dentaid The Dental Charity provide aid to refurbish dental practices and provide equipment for dentists across the globe. They have recently rebranded and expanded, and provide dental aid to populations across the UK via mobile practices.

This week, we bring you the inspiring career journey of Sarah Maher. Sarah fell into dentistry at 15, completing her work experience at a practice where her next-door neighbour worked. She nursed for the dentist for the whole week which led to a job offer 2 years later when she completed college. After trying her hand at all aspects of dental treatments, Sarah went from chair side to running an urgent care centre. She then landed the role of Service Lead, managing the entire service for 6 months prior to the start of the pandemic. Now as Director of Operations for a small group of orthodontic practices, Sarah works to develop software, aligners, and educational opportunities such as Orthodontic Therapy apprenticeships.

For Episode 3 of The Eastman Dental Podcast, Simone Ruzario discusses her career journey from studying Chemistry to Dental Therapy. After completing her degree in Medical Microbiology, Simone completed her dental training at Barts. Since then, she has completed her post graduate training and gained a Master of Public Health - MPH from The University of Manchester. Simone shares her experience working in the voluntary sector and her inspirational outreach work across the globe.

Starting in a small family dental practice before being thrust into a bustling London teaching hospital, Jennifer picked up post qualifications in OHE, impression taking and implant nursing. She briefly left dentistry and headed into facial aesthetics, adding dermatology and cannulation to her arsenal of skills. However, she soon realised her true passion lay in dentistry, which she now discusses with Julia and Josh.

To kick off Series 4 of The Eastman Dental Podcast, we are joined by the Editor-in-Chief of the British Dental Journal, Stephen Hancocks. He is a dentist, writer and editor, and also owns his own publishing business. Stephen discusses his successful and varied dental career starting out as a teenager dental nursing to working as a dentist whilst writing for the BBC, and being appointed OBE in 1997 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for services to the dental profession. This is an episode you won't want to miss!

Series 3 FINALE! In the final episode of the Eastman Dental Podcast, Josh and Julia are joined by Charlotte Carling. Charlotte started her career in the Middle East as a lead hygienist in the Armed Forced Hospital in Saudi Arabia. She then moved to Dubai as the first ever hygienist at Emirates Airline. After several years working abroad, Charlotte moved back to the UK to become a co-owner of a dental practice. She worked as both a dental hygienist and therapist whilst jointly running the business. This week’s guest is Ben Carpenter. Ben started his career in dentistry as a Student Dental Nurse at the Eastman Dental Hospital. After completing his training, Ben practised as a dental nurse at the Eastman as well as in general practise. Since then, he progressed into leadership roles and is now the Assistant General Manager of Audio-vestibular Medicine & Audiology at the Royal National ENT & Eastman Dental Hospital. Robert Leigh initially trained as a Dental Nurse, which was his first steps into the world of dentistry. He then joined the Eastman Dental Hospital at UCLH and completed his training to become a Dental Hygienist. Robert took on many leadership roles throughout his training and is currently studying for a BSc in Management and Leadership in Health and Social Care. He also completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Periodontics and is currently working in Community Healthcare NHS Trust as an Oral Health Promoter. This week Julia and Josh are jumping into the world of dental technology with Andrea Johnson. Andrea is a dental technician who creates and manufactures intra-oral appliances and dental prosthetics. In this episode, she discusses her roles in managing laboratory services and as a career ambassador, helping young people learn more about the various roles that are available within dentistry. Andrea also shares her experiences in her leadership roles within the GDC and the Healthcare Leadership Academy and gives us more information on her charity, Den-Tech, aimed at providing affordable dental care to those who lack access.
