081: The Four Steps to Landing Every Project

4/8/2024
Ever felt like you're running a marathon with business opportunities, only to end up with a hodgepodge of projects that leave you breathless and unfulfilled? I've been there, juggling clients and deadlines, until I realized the power of the Golden Door Qualifier. It's a game-changer: a four-step method that starts with an intricate website inquiry form and ends with selecting projects that mirror your passion and expertise. Today, I'm peeling back the layers of this meticulous design discovery process, discussing why saying 'yes' to every client can lead to professional burnout, and how to pivot towards working smarter by embracing quality over quantity. Branding and project management are two sides of the same coin, and in this episode, I'm revealing how platforms like AD Pro and the Scout Guide are tools for crafting your brand's narrative. It's all about strategic visibility, not just lead generation. I'll walk you through setting realistic project timelines, managing expectations, and the savvy move of researching a prospect's address to tailor your pitch. Plus, I'll share my insights on commanding respect by redefining 'budget' as 'planned interior investment,' ensuring clients see the true value in your design expertise. It can be so easy to want to shortcut through the initial project inquiry and design discovery stages to secure exciting new projects and clients. However, skipping these steps only shortchanges you from achieving your ideal clientele and most inspirational projects. Nurturing a mutually beneficial relationship with clients from the get-go–even when they are just potential clients–is the compass that guides your content toward your aspirations. So, let's embark on this journey together and tailor a design practice that supports not just a thriving career, but an extraordinary life. In this episode, you will hear: Introduction to the Golden Door Qualifier for vetting potential design clients effectively Discussion on branding and project management, including the use of platforms like AD Pro and the Scout Guide Importance of personal consultations to ensure client-designer compatibility and shared work style Strategies for researching project addresses and gaining insights for tailored pitches Follow and Review: We’d love for you to follow us if you haven’t yet. 079: If She’d Only Met Me 8 Years Ago

3/25/2024
If you’ve been feeling the burn-out of doing things the way you’ve always done them, you definitely want to tune in today. In today’s episode, I had the delightful opportunity to sit down with the remarkable Catherine Hersacher, president and interior design principal of Bespoke Fine Interiors in Aiken, South Carolina. When we met last year at my designer training day, Catherine was already a seasoned pro in the design industry. However, she had no idea how much some of her old ways were holding her back from even greater success. Within a few weeks from our first meeting, she and her team had implemented flat fees and gained their first proposal at just under six figures. The changes she instated even made a sabbatical from her practice possible, allowing her to pull back and focus on growing in other aspects of her life as well. And it all came from just a few steps outside of her comfort zone. In our candid conversation, we tackle the pressing challenges that come with the always-changing territory of design entrepreneurship. From serendipitous partnerships within a team to mutually fulfilling collaborations, Catherine shares the unfiltered realities of managing a thriving and authentic design business and the steps she had to take along the way. We dive deep into the strategic choices she's made, such as finding peace with being a design chameleon, and how these choices have shaped her path to success. Tune in to our conversation for inspiration filled with authenticity, confidence, and the flexibility to adapt to the ever-changing tides of the industry. 076: How Being Cheap Is Killing Your Profits

3/4/2024
It may sound truly counterintuitive, but being cheap is killing your profits. We often look for ways to complete important tasks for our business by ourselves to save money. We think that this will maximize our profits because we aren’t spending the money to outsource the job. But taking on too many tasks that you don’t enjoy or aren’t skilled at is really just taking you away from your zone of genius. When you are in your zone of genius, you’re at that intersection of what you absolutely love to do, what you're truly brilliant at, and what you're fast at completing. And if the tasks you are completing for your business don’t live in your zone of genius, you should be outsourcing or delegating them so you can spend more time doing the things you love to do. This will keep you from burning out but will also maximize your profits because your time will be free to complete the work for your business that only you can do. In today’s episode, I will walk you through some of the ways that you're actually being cheap. I have solutions for how to work around these tasks that I will share with you. Your business should never feel like a chore–I want you to enjoy your work and be in your highest and best talent. I want you to do what you do best, what you do with ease, and I want you to delegate, outsource, or delete the rest. 073: Are Your Clients Allies or Obstacles?

2/12/2024

Today, I peel back the curtain on the collaborative dance we engage in with clients, sharing candidly how a project's end can actually become the beginning of a lifelong partnership. As we weave through, you’ll learn to recognize that the codependency which underpins a service relationship can actually be pure magic for your design process. What if I told you that the words you choose can have an impact on your bottom line? One of the best ways to attract affluent clients is by choosing the right words–words that not only magnify the worth of your work but sow the seeds of success.
