Woody Adjacent - John Travolta, Gene Hackman, Rene Russo & Danny DeVito - Get Shorty (1995)

4/28/2024
Welcome back ladies and gents to another episode of Woody Adjacent! This time we come back to our Ai Companion's recommendation of the very well loved movie: Get Shorty (1995) As well as talking about the original 1995 film adaptation, we also get into a discussion on the much HATED sequel 'Be Cool' (2005) and lastly the more recent fresh TV adaptation created in 2017 It's always interesting to see what the Ai comes up with after analysing Woody Allens Filmography and writing style... its even more fun hearing its reasonings for picking the film itself, which it does! Get ready for a fun ride and another great conversation :) __________________________________________ In Get Shorty (1995) Chili Palmer (John Travolta) is a Miami loan shark with a secret dream. Stuck collecting debts for a ruthless mob boss (Dennis Farina), Chili gets sent to Los Angeles to track down a down-on-his-luck producer named Harry Zimm (Gene Hackman) who owes a hefty gambling debt. Upon arriving in Hollywood, Chili quickly realizes the film industry is surprisingly similar to the criminal world he knows. He finds himself navigating a landscape of broken promises, shady characters, and desperate hustles. However, Chili's brash confidence and knowledge of the "business" side of things strangely changes his fortune and unlikely partnerships lead to unexpected opportunities for Chilli in Hollywood! Woody Adjacent - Kevin Bacon, John Malkovich, Jamie Lee Curtis & Joe Mantegna - Queens Logic (1991)

2/27/2024
On this episode we are doing a supporter request from our ongoing patreon campign. In truth, we get quite a few requests for Woody Allen Adjacent that don't quite fit the bill, but in this case we just could not ignore the ensemble cast and woody like setting - a worthy candidate for this project from the outset..... How did we feel about it though? >_< lets see... In Queens Logic (1991) a group of childhood male friends reunite for an upcoming wedding. Beneath the celebratory facade, each friend grapples with personal challenges and hidden emotions. Al (Joe Mantegna), the life of the party, hides a strained marriage beneath his womanising facade. Dennis (Kevin Bacon), a musician returned from Hollywood, faces the ghosts of his past. Vinny (Kenneth Mitchell), a struggling actor, yearns for more than one-night stands. Eliot (John Malkovich), the lone gay member of the group, confronts his loneliness and societal pressures and the groom to be appears have wedding jitters related to his artistic dreams of being a successful painter. As the festivities unfold old wounds resurface, secrets are revealed and relationships are tested, all done through humour, introspection and a very QUEENS like state of mind. Woody Adjacent - Steve Coogan & Rob Brydon - The Trip Movie Series (2010-2020)

1/27/2024
A very happy new year 2024 to all our fellow listeners and subscribers! Today we are starting the year off with a bigger project from our co-host James, as it is his month of choice for the decided movie discussion. As such, James has chosen a British movie series that is a recut of an existing television series focusing on two comedians playing fictional versions of themselves. Its a fun one to start the year off with for sure... lets dig in! In "The Trip" (2010), comedian Steve Coogan embarks on a culinary tour of northern England with his frenemy, fellow comedian Rob Brydon. While ostensibly reviewing restaurants for The Observer, their journey becomes a hilariously melancholic exploration of friendship, aging, and artistic validation. Woody Adjacent - Maggie Smith, Richard Pryor, Michael Caine, Elaine May, Alan Alda, Bill Cosby & Jane Fonda - California Suite (1978)

12/26/2023
We are here at the very END of 2023 with our last Adjacent release! If you have been keeping up with us in recent months we have been hinting at using Ai as a 3rd source of research in choosing our adjacent picks. We have 65 movies.. one for every year since 1969. James randomly got a 10 from our adjacent list choice picker.. and that means today we are going to talk about..... In 1978's California Suite, four suites witness the bittersweet joys and crushing anxieties of their temporary residents. Through interwoven vignettes of laughter, tears, and the bittersweet tang of human connection, California Suite paints a poignant portrait of life, love, and the pursuit of dreams under the California sun. 10/27/2023
On this episode of Woody Adjacent, James brings us what seemed like a great recommendation ..only to find not only disappointment but some unfortunate behind the scenes details that still lead to a great conversation regardless :) Fools Paradise (2023) tells the story of a mute man recently released from a mental health facility. Woody Adjacent - Jon Favreau, Famke Janssen, Valerie Breiman - Love & Sex (2000)

7/28/2023
Welcome back to another episode of Woody Allen Adjacent Today we are talking about a Rom-Com that hits all the typical beats that was made in the turn of the century with Actors that have come a massively long way since this feature - maybe nobodys seen it but it's Don's choice of the month In Love and Sex (2000) Kate Welles (Famke Janssen), a sharp-witted journalist known for her explicit articles, finds herself fired for pushing the boundaries a bit too far. With her career on hold and a deadline looming, Kate reflects on her own chaotic love life in search of inspiration for an article on healthy relationships. Her journey takes us through flashbacks of past relationships, from awkward childhood crushes to passionate but ill-timed encounters. We see her navigate the complexities of dating, facing challenges like a judgmental boyfriend hung up on her past and a fling with a charming but emotionally unavailable actor (Jon Favreau). Woody Adjacent - Charlie Kaufman, David Thewlis, Jennifer Jason Leigh & Tom Noonan - Anomalisa (2015)

6/20/2023
We are BACK with another delightful conversation for Woody Adjacent Apologies for the continued technical issues hitting us on this episode. Editing couldn't quite fix annoying microphone peaking, echoing and some artifacting from Zoom >_< We are still working out some annoying lil bugs while using our newer machines that will be straightened out sooner rather than later but alas enough excuses... on with the show! Today we finally get to not only a recommended title by Woody fans but James pick for this month... another Charle Kaufman venture which is actually an animated / stop motion feature In Anomalisa (2015) follows Michael Stone (voiced by David Thewlis), a jaded and lonely motivational speaker who perceives everyone around him as identical – same face, same voice (voiced by Tom Noonan). This monotony extends to his wife and son, leaving him feeling deeply disconnected from the world. During a business trip to Cincinnati, Michael stumbles upon a glimmer of hope. He encounters Lisa (voiced by Jennifer Jason Leigh), a hotel employee with a unique voice that breaks through his monotonous perception. A tentative connection sparks between them, offering a potential escape from his lonely existence. Welcome back to another episode of Woody Allen Adjacent here on the Retrospective Podcast! We have some fun suggestions on what Woody Allen Movies he could have done well in since his actual planned movie role with Woody Fell through in the mid 2000's which was quite unfortunate This movie is a really great showcase of his talents though that many people seemed to have missed or snubbed :P So with that said.. lets talk about 1997's - Two Girls And A Guy Please check out the links below for the full cast, user reviews, ratings and info you may find interesting Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two_Girls_and_a_Guy IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0124179/? Woody Adjacent - Edward Burns, Jennifer Aniston & Cameron Diaz - She’s The One (1996)

3/28/2023
Welcome back to another episode of Woody Allen Adjacent! We want to give a massive thank you to one of our wonderful listeners: PAUL STICKNEY who recommended we give the works of Edward Burns a look as a good match for future adjacent talks! Edward Burns seems to be most celebrated for his first directorial movie: The Brothers McMullen but before we get to that one i thought lets take a side step and actually check up his follow up movie with a really cool cast In "She's The One" (1996) Mickey Fitzpatrick (Edward Burns), a heartbroken cab driver recently dumped by his fiancée Heather seeks solace in a whirlwind marriage to the impulsive artist Hope (Maxine Bahns). Woody Adjacent - Steve Martin, Sarah Jessica Parker - L.A. Story (1991)

2/27/2023
Welcome back to another episode of Woody Allen Adjacent! This month we are talking about one of the worlds most celebrated comedic actors who has some really interesting parallels to Woody Allen - this movie in particular seems to be a jokey-poke love letter to a city very close to his heart that, of course, we have a good ol' conversation about In L.A. Story (1991) Harris K. Telemacher (Steve Martin) trudges through his life as a bored weatherman in Los Angeles. His job feels unfulfilling, his relationship with his materialistic girlfriend Trudi (Marilu Henner) is stagnant, and the city's superficiality grates on him. One night, a chance encounter with a talking freeway billboard (voiced by Rebecca De Mornay) throws his world upside down. The billboard becomes Harris' unlikely confidante, offering him witty advice and nudging him towards a more fulfilling life. As Harris seeks love and meaning, he crosses paths with two compelling women: Sara (Victoria Tennant), a sharp-witted British journalist researching L.A. culture, and SanDee (Sarah Jessica Parker), a ditzy aspiring model with an unusual way of spelling her name ("Sandy" in the credits). Through hilarious mishaps and surreal encounters (think exploding sushi and a conga line of celebrities), Harris embarks on a journey of self-discovery. He grapples with finding authentic connections in the shallow world of L.A., and the film playfully satirizes the city's quirks and obsessions. Woody Adjacent - Zoe Kazan & Paul Dano - Ruby Sparks (2012)

1/27/2023
Wishing everybody a very happy new year 2023 to all our humble listeners / wonderful subscribers! Woody Allen Adjacent is back for another year of great debate and discussion while we await another official woody release - starting the year off with a somewhat fantasy / slice of life romantic drama.. where we had to ask ourselves.. can ONE scene determine the flow of an entire movie? o_0 In Ruby Sparks (2012) Paul Dano portrays Calvin Weir-Fields, a once-celebrated novelist suffering from crippling writer's block. Frustrated and desperate, he resorts to an unorthodox method: writing a character named Ruby Sparks (played by Zoe Kazan) and detailing her personality, appearance, and even her quirks. To his astonishment, Ruby inexplicably comes to life the next morning, stepping out of the pages of his manuscript and into his world. Calvin is initially overjoyed, finding himself in a whirlwind romance with his dream woman. However, as their relationship progresses, things start to change... Woody Adjacent - Billy Crystal & Meg Ryan - When Harry Met Sally (1989)

12/25/2022
Seasons Greetings All! We are still recovering from the jolliest of seasons.. and that horrible trip we shared with Alex on our last discussion >_< But today we are going to talk about one of the most celebrated Romantic Comedy's of all time.. right up there with Anne Hall in our humble opinion I called it low hanging fruit for a discussion.. that doesn't mean the fruit itself is not oozing with all the flavours needed for a great conversation! In the iconic romantic comedy "When Harry Met Sally" (1989), Billy Crystal portrays Harry Burns, a cynical writer firmly believing men and women can't truly be friends due to the "sex thing" always getting in the way. Meg Ryan plays Sally Albright, a quick-witted journalist who fiercely disagrees. Their paths first cross as recent college graduates sharing a bumpy car ride from Chicago to New York, where their opposing views ignite a spirited debate. Years pass, and fate throws them together again at various points in their lives. Through chance encounters, both find themselves in relationships while still drawn to each other's sharp wit and intellectual connection. Along with their best friends (Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby), they navigate the complexities of modern dating, heartbreak, and the ever-present tension between Harry's skepticism and Sally's longing for genuine connection. As the years unfold, their arguments and banter become laced with a growing emotional vulnerability.
