Season 9 Episode 3 w Professor Sarah Blunden on Sleep and Pediatrics

4/12/2024
In this episode, Dr Ian Dunican talks to Professor Sarah Blunden, whom he recently connected with at the Australasian Sleep Association' Sleep Down Under' conference in South Australia. Sarah's research and work centres around paediatric sleep, focusing on promoting the importance of healthy sleep habits while young, paving the way for quality sleep in adulthood. Her main areas of interest are infant sleep and sleep interventions (that do not necessitate ignoring nor controlled crying), sleep education in schools and communities, and Indigenous sleep health. As an avid young dancer growing up in Adelaide, Sarah successfully obtained a highly coveted position to train with the prestigious Australian Ballet School in Melbourne. At 20 years of age, she moved abroad and performed all over central Europe with a French ballet company. After developing Rheumatoid Arthritis 10 years later, Sarah bid farewell to the touring and travelling life and returned home to commence her Honors, Master and Ph.D. studies in the field of children's sleep. Sarah is recognised as an authority on children's sleep and is widely published in the field. She has given over 70 presentations to academics, health, education, and medical professionals. Additionally, Sarah has published over 100 academic papers and books, with one such publication, 'The Boss of My Sleep’ highlighted in the discussion. Sarah is Head of Paediatric Sleep Research at Central Queensland University, the Founder/Director of the Australian Centre for Education in Sleep and Research, an Advisor to the Australian Psychological Society, and a practising Clinical Psychologist at the Paediatric Sleep Clinic. The Sensible Sleep website contains information on training programs created by Sarah for infant and toddler sleep intervention and junior and senior school children's sleep education, along with many free resources available for teachers, industry professionals and parents. Animal Sleep Series EP03 w/ Dr. John Lesku on Animal Sleep

4/25/2023
In this episode, I talk with Professor John Lesku John is interested in most things related to sleep. Using behavioural observations, accelerometry for remote monitoring, and neurophysiological recording techniques, he seeks to provide insight into how sleep and sleep functions have evolved in different types of animals, from flatworms to birds and mammals. He also studies how ecological factors (e.g., predation risk, reproduction) influence the amount, composition, depth, and timing of sleep. Most recently, these interests have expanded to include how anthropogenic pollution influences sleeping brain activity in mammals and birds. Animal Sleep Series EP02 w/ Dr. Anne Aulsebrook on Sleep Loss and Sandpiper Birds

3/13/2023
In this episode, I talk with my new friend Dr. Anne Aulsebrook. We continue our journey on learning about birds and sleep and discuss many fascinating topics. The peculiar mating practices and attraction with sleep loss in sandpiper birds Dr. Anne Aulsebrook is a behavioral ecologist interested in activity patterns and sleep. During her PhD, she investigated the effects of urban light pollution on sleep in birds. More recently, she has become interested in the behaviour of shorebirds that breed under constant daylight in the arctic. Previous research has shown substantial diversity in the activity patterns of these birds. Intriguingly, male pectoral sandpipers have the least sleep also have the greatest reproductive success. How do males attract females when they have had hardly any sleep? How does activity relate to reproductive success in other shorebirds, with different mating systems? To what extent can male shorebirds change their activity in different social contexts? These are some of the questions that she is exploring during her postdoctoral fellowship. Animal Sleep Series, Episode 1 w Prof Theresa Jones on sleep in birds

2/11/2023
In this episode, I talk to Professor Theresa Jones. Her main area of research is in the field of behavioural ecology, with a particular focus on understanding the causes and consequences of variability in mating systems, the role of chemical cues, and, most recently, the impact of artificial night lighting on individual fitness and community structure. She completed an undergraduate at the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine (UK) and a PhD at the Institute of Zoology (UK). During her PhD, she spent a year at the Instituto Evandro Chagas in Belém, Brazil, conducting field observations and experiments. She commenced postdoctoral research in 1999 at Uppsala University (Sweden), exploring alternative male mating strategies in vertebrate (the ruff, Philomachus pugnax) and invertebrate (Hawaiian Drosophila) lekking species. In 2001, she was awarded a Royal Society Travelling Fellowship to conduct research at the University of Melbourne. Season 8, Episode 2 w Melanie Furrer on Sleep in Reindeer, a Christmas Special

12/19/2022
Changes in reindeer sleep regulation across the year: a central role for rumination? In this episode, I am joined by Melanie Furrer, who recently presented her study on sleep in reindeer. Most non-hibernating animals maintain daily “circadian ”rhythms of sleep across the year, as well as “homeostatic” sleep-wake patterns in which increasing time awake is followed by increased sleep amount or intensity. Strikingly, ruminant reindeer in the Arctic show 24-h rhythmicity at the equinoxes but none at either solstice; summertime activity greatly exceeds wintertime activity. So far, nothing is known about their sleep or how it might be seasonally modulated. Methods: We simultaneously recorded non-invasive electroencephalography EEG in four adult female reindeer for four days at The Arctic University of Norway in Tromsø, Norway in July, September, and December. Rapid eye movement, REM sleep, non-REM NREM sleep, and rumination were visually identified from the EEG, and slow-wave activity SWA, EEG power 1–18 4.5 Hz during NREM sleep, the classic marker for homeostatic changes in sleep pressure, was calculated. Results: Although sleep in reindeer generally resembled that of other mammals, key novel adaptations were observed in July/September: n=4, December: n=3. Like most species, sleep-wake distribution paralleled daily activity during seasonally changing light-dark conditions and SWA during NREM sleep increased after prolonged wake periods. Surprisingly, total sleep duration was roughly equal across seasons, and prolonged waking produced a lower SWA response in summer than in winter. As reported for some domestic ruminants, EEG during rumination showed typical characteristics of NREM sleep. Furthermore, rumination appeared to substitute for sleep under all observed conditions. Accordingly, SWA decreased across rumination, and total rumination and NREM sleep durations were negatively correlated. Homeostatic modelling of SWA further suggested that rumination was equivalent to sleep. Conclusions: We suggest that less pronounced SWA increases across waking in summer might indicate higher baseline sleep pressure during this season, possibly resulting from increased activity, food intake and light exposure. Within this context, rumination might partially substitute conventional sleep, permitting near-constant feeding in the arctic summer while compensating for increased sleep pressure.
