WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart - Finished a tiny model of a Gelvades Class Battle Carrier from Star Blazers 2199. Started 1 of two Bandai Cosmo Typhoon Fighters. These are very tiny, 1/200, but I love the look of them.
Geoff - continuing on the Heller 1/72 Douglas DC-6B in fictitious water bomber markings for my brother’s growing fleet.
Terry - Working on Fade To Black’s 1/10 Hammerhead Shark, finally. Assembly and filling. Painting a couple Reaper dragons, a forest dragon and a magma dragon. Still in airbrush stage now, but will be in brush painting before too much longer. Mechs are still in assembly, slow going is fine for these.

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart - With the model show planning and life, no time for bench work this week.
Geoff - two windstorms in London impacted our neighbourhood, resulting in changes in our lives and one chainsaw accident…
As a tie in to the books I’ve been reading I worked on repairing a couple of dinosaur skeletons originally built by Steve Harvey, who passed away last year.
[foogallery id="4002"]
A year ago I built a 1/48 Monogram DC-3 for my brother, who had just become a grandfather and wanted a “bush plane/rescue thing” to hang from the ceiling of his cottage. A fellow club member made custom decals for “Nana and Pops Rescue Service”, with a logo I designed of a bare bum passing explosive gas. It was flown by my brother’s nom de plume, “Rocco Flamefart”…. Anyway, he wants more vehicles for the “fleet”, so I am now building a Heller 1/72 DC6B in N&P markings!
I also have been working on the old Hobbycraft 1/28 Fokker DR1. Not bad and satisfyingly substantial!
Terry - I can see the bench again! I’m getting close to getting back on the bench itself. As far as building goes, not much new. Still the same mechs and some base coat on the two Reaper dragons.
***************************************
WHAT WE ARE READING
Stuart - The Notebook by Roland Allen
Geoff - my wife and I did the dinosaur road tour of Alberta last month and I read The Rise and Fall Of the Dinosaurs by Steve Brusatte, and The Burgess Shale by Coppold and Powell. Good reads.
Terry - Ed Yong’s I Contain Multitudes. About microorganisms, specifically our micro biome. A very good read, so far. Catching up on the My Happy Marriage light novels.

Hey guys.
I've been playing catch up with my podcast listening. I always enjoy your review of what's coming out in the model world. Both for the information and the back and forth comments. Keep it up!
What's on my bench:
Tamiya P-38 with way too much aftermarket.
Revell SR-71a for when I need a break from the P-38 nightmare I created
What I'm reading:
I just finished the Geddy Lee book, much like Brent did. I've been a Rush fan since my first Rush purchase in 1976. I was lucky enough to see Geddy earlier this year on his book tour. The date of the event coincided with Holocaust Remembrance Day so he spent some extra time talking on that subject. A great evening that was.
Dust - this is the third book in the Silo series. They made the TV series after the first book. The next season will start looking at book 2, Shift.
The Cactus Air Force: Air War over Guadalcanal - A good read. Nothing else has ever held a candle to Neptune's Inferno, but still very enjoyable.
Be well everyone and keep building!

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart - Got the decals done on the Tamiya 1/48 Sherman Firefly. They went on very well.
Geoff - had the grandkids for the weekend and did two”weekend builds” with two of them (the third wanted to draw). One grandson chose the ancient Revell 1/72 PT 109 and my granddaughter chose the even more ancient Revell Nautilus nuclear submarine. He wanted a more realistic scheme, but she wanted pink, purple, red and yellow…! A lot of fun!
Terry - No changes. Not much progress. Doing plenty of yard work now, spring is springing.
Brent - Not much time for things, Ultra 7 ship from Hasegawa. UltraHawk. A couple of busts, including a Keatan Batman. Both sculptures by Jeff Yeager
***************************************
WHAT WE ARE READING
Stuart - Nada
Geoff - really just either too busy or too exhausted to focus on reading, but looking forward to doing so soon!
Terry - Finished Baxter’s Moon Seed. I think I like this the best of the trio. Now I’m reading Adam Rutherford’s A Brief History of Everyone Who Ever Lived. It’s a few years old, but highly regarded. It examines the history of humans via our DNA. I’m also still reading The Apothacary Diaries novels in the background.

Good morning Stuart, Terry, and Geoff! Continuing to thoroughly enjoy each episode. Hope to see some of you at IPMS Nats in August.
If you would be so kind as to add SilverCon to your contest announcement rotation, I would appreciate that.
On May 17th we’ll be hosting SilverCon 2025, with a theme of “The Vietnam War”. The flyer is attached with the details, but here they are as text. Thanks for helping us get the word out to all within range of Sacramento (We’re in Northern CA, in the Central Valley between San Francisco and Lake Tahoe)!
Details:
Saturday, May 17th.
Town & Country Lutheran Church
4049 Marconi Ave.
Sacramento, CA
To qualify for the theme award, your entry needs to be something from the time period of 1955-1975 (not just military items, could be cars, real space, etc.).
We will have vendors and a raffle!
Doors open at 9 AM, with registration closing at noon. Judging starts at noon, and we hope to have the awards finished by 3:30.
It will be standard IPMS 1-2-3 format. We will put the 2nd & 3rd place awards on the tables, and announce the first place & best of winners only (along with ALL the juniors 1/2/3).
Check our Facebook page for updates.
Thanks!

Hello Stuart, could you please plug our 12th annual model contest and swap meet being held on Saturday May 17, 2025 in Eagle River, Wisconsin. The location is about 3 hours north of Madison where the IPMS-USA Nationals were held last year. I’ve enclosed a copy of our flyer for more details.
I truly enjoy your show and find your information very helpful in my modeling projects. I model a little bit of everything from cars, planes, armor, to si-fi. I also enjoy reading and just finished “100 Missions North” by Col. Ken Bell who flew a F-105 during Vietnam. The book was a easy read and provided a look into the lives of “Thud” drivers during that difficult time. Check it out.
Take care.

Hi Guys,
Listening to Episode 153, I want to commend for your Literature reading, the novels by Philip Kerr. He wrote a series of 13 books in which the protagonist is a German policeman: they begin during the Weimar Republic years, span the Nazi period, and continue into the post-WW II era. The writing style leans heavily towards Raymond Chandler. They are NOT for the squeamish, however, as the historical accuracy is pretty spot-on. I recommend starting with Kerr's final volume, "Metropolis", which is set historically before the rest of the books in the series. As a testament to how much I like these books, I've read the entire series TWICE!
Lastly, Stuart commented, in regard to a new Eduard Bf-109 E kit, that Adolf Galland had the most aerial victories in WW II. Actually, that should have been Erich Hartmann, a German fighter pilot who served mostly, I believe, on the Russian front.
Love your podcast,
Dave Kensy

After reading Adam Savage's book I think it's time for a serious overhaul of my workspace. I see some of his philosophy can be very helpful. Mostly for my toolbox and bench drawers.

Suggestions for organizing stuff, do you have a system?

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart - Whirlwind painting is done, gloss coat has been applied, started decals. Working on a 1/48 Tamiya Sherman Firefly. Also working on a Matchbox 1/76 M-40 GMC as a club nostalgia build.
Geoff - as part of the same “nostalgia build” contest our local club is having I started on a couple of old Matchbox and Esci 1/72 and 1/76 kits of a Humber armoured car and a Pzkpf 1. Fast, small and fun. I even decided to try and finish them with paints from the era - old Polly Scale acrylics! The smell even takes me back!
Terry: Since I have new mecha kits for our old Battletech crew, I started the Hasegawa 1/72 Super Valkyrie battroid. That was Jeff’s mech. Finished up the Hasegawa Harpy fighter (Crusher Joe) in Norma’s red scheme. 90% done with the Macross Phalanx, but need to replace the antennae, since I broke one.
Neil - Scratch built Macross Diorama building continues in 1/72nd scale. Painted and almost ready for glosscoating and decalling.

WHAT WE ARE READING
Stuart - Same as last week. Stephen Baxter’s Traces

Hey guys,
Not really sure how often you guys get feedback on the literature section of the podcast but I just wanted to reach out and say thank you.
I recently finished Chris Hadfield’s “The Defector” and I was worried about where I would get my next space fix from. The Apollo series he created is amazing from my point of view.
But in the meantime, Baxter will scratch that itch!
Keep up the great work,
Tyler

Geoff - Finished a little Polish light plane in 1/72, just because it was so tiny, then started an even smaller Soviet seaplane from WW2. Also picked up a few kits from the same estate sale, including the old Airfix Refueling Set and Recovery Set, a Matchbox Victor K2, a Heller Douglas DC 6B, a tiny Airfix bag kit of the Cessna Bird Dog and several more!
Terry - getting final pictures sorted out for the Moosaroo. I suppose I can reveal it now. Also I’ll get the Phalanx assembled for some final touches. The Crusher Joe Harpy is in the same spot, those should both be done by the weekend. Probably. Beyond that, deciding on the next shelf queen to finish, assembling some Reaper Minis dragons since I’m back in a bit of the mythical beasts painting groove.

WHAT WE ARE READING

Geoff - reading? What’s “reading”?
Terry - Adam Savage’s Every Tool’s a Hammer. My friend Emily said it was very good and gave me her copy. So far it is. More from his approaches to starting and maintaining projects, asking for and giving help etc. I’ve implemented his checklist approach at work and it’s pretty useful. WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart - Finished the 1/24 Land Rover LWB and also started and finished a MaK Nutrocker in 1/76. Simple yet cool looking kit. Now starting a Trumpeter 1/48 Westland Whirlwind.
[foogallery id="3893"]
Geoff - still plugging away at the Arado Amerika bomber project, but for a change of pace I pulled a tiny 1/72 Polish sport plane kit from the pile. An old kit from the Soviet era, but not too bad for detail, and very simple.
Terry - Getting close to done on the Moosaroo entry. Lighting tests with the subject in the box, some slight tweaks to get things just right and I should be taking photos this weekend. I have some work travel this week, so I may not get any more done until then. One layer of dullcoat on the Phalanx, it needs another but it’s been very cold in the garage.
***************************************
WHAT WE ARE READING
Stuart - Working my way through Stephen Baxter’s Short story collection called Traces.
Geoff- plowing through a collection of “After the Battle” magazines - lots of interesting stories!
Terry - Same as before, about 80 percent through Titan. Quite a ride, this book. I am eyeing an Osprey book on Troy, which has been sitting on the shelf for a while.

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart - Slow but steady work on the Revell Land Rover. Wheels are now on and just a few more things to do. Airbrushes are on the way back from Badger. Looking forward to getting them back.
Got a Tamiya 1/48 Sherman Firefly for the 48 hour build in March. Nice looking kit.
Geoff - finished off the IBG 1/72 IAR80 and wrote the article on it for IPMS Canada, although you may never see it. Bottom line: very nice kit. Continued on the old Revell 1/72 Arado what if Amerika bomber. I couldn’t find my lead weights, so I decided to do it in flight, perhaps dropping bombs over the NYC skyline, although in light of recent international events, I may have to find a red state with a recognizable skyline as a base! I wonder if anyone makes a 3D file of Mar a Lago?
Terry: Work continues apace on the Moosaroo. The shadowbox is coming along nicely. I hope to be done shortly. The Phalanx is looking good, not much more on this either but I’ve said that for a month now. I do need to get a new windscreen for the Wingsy Claude, it broke in half in the bag. It is quite thin plastic.
***************************************
WHAT WE ARE READING
Stuart - I’ve been in a reading kick lately instead of spending as much time on social media. Finished Titan and Moonseed by Stephen Baxter, now moving on to a collection of short stories by him called Traces.
Geoff - I’ve been ploughing through a complete collection of Scale Airplane Modeller magazine and been fascinated by the fact that model debates never seem to change! Prices are too high, people who just collect kits, thus raising market prices for builders, are evil, who needs fancy new paints, IPMS judging sucks, etc. The UK magazine was quite parochial, and although there was a ton of good information on UK aircraft, they do get a tad stuck on themselves - back in 1988 at least.
Terry: Apparently I’ve fallen behind Stuart! I’m halfway through Stephen Baxter’s Titan. Also reading the first series of Bleach Manga. It tracks very close to the anime.

Hello Gentlemen!
I have a show discussion topic for you all to ponder: SCALE WARS!
The premise is as simple as it is fictional. Imagine I have hired each of you as a consultant to my brand new (again, fictional) scale model manufacturing company. I want to shake up the injection-molded kit industry and I’m relying on your knowledge and expertise. I am not interested in which kit you want made that either doesn’t exist yet...

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart - Revell 1/24 Land Rover Series III LWB station wagon. Picked this up at Heritagecon last year. My Dad has a short wheelbase model and I’m doing it as a tribute build to him. Many sprues and much priming and painting.
I gave my airbrushes a good deep clean over the holidays. One of my Badger airbrushes needs a good service. Badger offers a lifetime labor warranty on their airbrushes so I’m packing the 155 and my 105 for a well-deserved service. I’ve heard good things in the past from people who have used this service. These two brushes have served me for over 10+ years.
Also picked up a Trumpeter 1/48 Westland Whirlwind and a 1/76 Nutrocker from an estate sale at the LHS.
Geoff - still focused on home renovations, but I did do a little work on the IBG kit. (IAR 80) Finally went to our local hobby shop and met the new owner today, and picked up a stash kit - an old resin kit of the Martian war machine from the 1953 version of War of the Worlds!
Terry - Work continues on the Moosaroo, the subject is coming along nicely and I need to start working on the diorama portion. The Wave Destroid Phalanx is moving along, with decals and some weathering. I’ll need to touch up some of the decals over the highly raised detail. My club, the Techmages, has started a BTS challenge, and I have plenty to finish up. I finally bought the old Grenadier (1993) Wyvern which has been staring at me from the high shelf in Games Plus. Beautifully cast, as were all the Grenadier miniatures.

WHAT WE ARE READING
Stuart - The Lord of the Rings - Return of the King. Every few years I re-read Tolkien’s classic trilogy.
Geoff - finished The Apollo Murders by Cmdr Chris Hatfield. Lots of fun and detail for space junkies. Also knee deep in “A Man on the Moon” by Andrew Chakin - a very deep dive into the lives of the Apollo astronauts and their personal experiences of their work. Very good.
Terry - Reading Stephen Baxter’s Voyage, first of his alternate history series about going to Mars with Saturn V-era technology. It’s an interesting exploration of what could have happened, while most of the world’s events remain the same. It’s a big book, and follows a few people in two timelines, one on the Mars mission and one on the events which led to it.

WHAT’S ON YOUR Bench.
Stuart - Some smaller kits such as Bandai’s Death Star II were completed over the last month and a half. I have a Meng Spice Harvester from Dune to be painted and weathered and I’ve started a Revell 1/24 Land Rover Series III
Geoff - nothing. Sweet diddly squat. Up to my neck in a 1:1 home demolition/renovation with lots of “surprises” that - like most surprises - were unexpected! On the positive side, the F16 I built as a USAF pilot's retirement gift was very warmly received, as was the C47 in Rocco Flamefart Fire Rescue markings, which now has a place of honour on my brother’s mantle. Also still plugging through the latest ex-modellers stash and library…
Terry - Christmas birds are done.
[foogallery id="3845"]
Tony - I’ve been working on a bunch of (Premium) P-Bandai Gundams since September. There are a total of four Master Grade, (1:100 scale) Gudams which were re-released in special black and neon colors. Included are Barbatos, Exia, Aile Strike along with the original RX-78-2.All are being built straight out-of-the-box, in an attempt to breathe some life back into my numerous, ongoing modeling projects which have been relegated to my Shelf-of-Doom!
To date, I’ve completed 3 of them, (Barbatos, Exia and Aile Strike), with just the RX-78-2 Remaining.
In the meantime, I recently started two Gundams from Netflix’s Requiem of Vengeance series. I just finished applying and cleaning up a wash I applied to my assembled RX, and am in the midst of trying to do a color conversion of the dark gray portions of the Zaku. I’m looking to give these parts a metallic look, but using diluted AK True Metal (paste).

Rob Riviezzo
I'm Rob Riviezzo, I'm from Long Island, NY. I've been building models since I was a small boy, probably around 6 or 7 years old when I used to sit with my dad while he made his HO scale train set. Took a break while in my teens and got back into the hobby around 21 after my mother fell ill and I was looking to get my mind off of all the craziness. I primarily build armour models, focused on mostly German and Russian WWII. I will also build the occasional modern armour subject or Sci Fi model like Gundam, or Star Wars. I am a very active member of Amps (Gotham Amps) and my local IPMS chapter (The Long Island Scale Model Society). I started the Modeling Insanity Podcast in May of 2023 after the Modeling Miscreant Podcast which I was a Co-Host on fell through. I am also now the Associate US Editor of Military Modelcraft International which is the largest English speaking Armor Military magazine in the world. I am a monthly contributor and reviewer for the magazine. I am known for my photo-etch and scratchbuilding.

I’m writing now because our local club, IPMS Santa Rosa, will be hosting a show on October 12, 2024 and I wanted to ask if you could please include our show during any upcoming model show “shoutouts" on your podcast.
We are very excited about this year's show. This year we will be adopting an Open/GSB judging format for the first time. In fact I’m pretty sure this will be the very first show ever to use an open judging format in the IPMS Region 9, which encompasses Northern California and Nevada. So we’ll be making a little history! With that in mind, the theme of our show will be “Evolution.”
I have attached our show flyer below but the pertinent information is that: It will be held from 9-4 pm on Saturday, October 12, 2024 at the Rohnert Park Community Center in Rohnert Park, California. Free admission and $12 entry fee for first 3 models. Lots of great vendors are lined up, we will have a terrific raffle, will be doing a build and take table and then the Open/GSB judging. We are also asking folks to bring kits and model building supplies to the show for donation to support our charity initiative for Help Heal Veterans, a wonderful organization that provides free theraputic kits and modeling supplies to veterans.

Hi Stuart,
Paul Redding
Just to say I am following your Tamiya 1/350 build with interest as I bought the 1/450 Hasegawa version earlier this month as part of a carrier / IJN aircraft rabbit hole I went down...I have steered clear of anything Japanese all my modeling life but finally, curiosity got the better of me and I caved. Lots of research on IJN aircraft and how it all got built up resulted in about 18 aircraft kits...doh! Luckily there were some sales on including the canopy masks so that helped...
I haven't built any warships before (except Airfix Victorious in 1/600 in the 60s as my father was on it in the Fleet Air Arm as a flight engineer bringing the aircraft up on deck and have pics of it in Sydney Harbour (see attached). You can also see its' sister ship Illustrious and maybe you / Geoff can identify the aircraft on board - Martlets? One photo shows an aircraft that seems to have stuffed it into the tower. I seem to have ended up with quite a few carriers as I also get sucked into watching docos on PBS America which is fatal
A doco on the scuttling of the ships at Scarpa Flow and the film Sink The Bismark didn't help either so that ended up with a few more purchases; I can't see the detail in 1/700 so...

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart - A bit more work on the Yamato, but it has been a ‘real life’ 2 weeks with too many other things going on.
I did take advantage of the sale at Broughdales.
Geoff - a little more work on the Goblin, but mostly real-life chores and getting the place ready for summer.
Terry - the P-47H is languishing a bit, I have been more enthusiastic about the Yamato Dreadnaughts and Crusher Joe Harpy. Painting moving along really nicely on those, now the Dreadnaughts move into masking preparing for more painting. Used the complimentary color priming at Anthony’s suggestion on the Mars pattern Dreadnaught.

Geoff - The Dambusters Raid by John Sweetman, and The Guns of Normandy by George Blackburn
Terry - Getting near the end of Adrian Tchaikovsky’s Shards of Earth - I’ll read the rest of the series in sequence. His storytelling is as good as ever, with believable characters, pretty much all of whom have a compelling point of view. Also started the Hellboy Omnibuses (Omnibi?). I actually think I haven’t read these before, somehow. Maybe excerpts?

THINGS WE’VE SEEN
Doog is Done with 1-2-3
Facebook group for ICM B-26. Of course, I can’t find it now, but someone is backdating one to a B-26B IIRC. Plenty of people making corrections, modifications, etc.
Godzilla Minus One. On Netflix now.
Vince Hoffman is nearly finished with a Tamiya 1:16 Tamiya M1A2 radio-controlled tank. If he posts videos, I’ll share them - and maybe we get him on the show.

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart - Work continues on the 1/350 Yamato. Starting to test fit the deck to the main hull. Sand a bit, blow off the soft plastic, test fit and repeat. Very zen like
Pick up 2 newer Tamiya colours that replace TS spray cans for this build.
[foogallery id="3745"]
Geoff - Worked on the Special Hobby 1/48 XF 85 Goblin. A bit of a challenge… Also managed to get my chainsaw mill working on some logs that have been drying for a few years, and did a lot of outdoor chores!
Terry - Working on those EDF Dreadnaughts, they will have some challenging paint schemes, and I’m trying something new - a complimentary color basing on the Mars ship. XP-47H is moving along, I really want to get this finished. Otherwise, figuring out what other half-finished projects need attention.
[foogallery id="3751"]
Chris - 22 inch Eagle from Space 1999, I also have Eagle 2. Which do I make the rescue eagle.

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart - Started on the Tamiya 1/350 Yamato, the mould is from 1973. The plan is to build it out of the box with just an aftermarket wood deck. Started working on the hanger deck crane and hanger deck doors.
[foogallery id="3728"]
Geoff - masking and painting on the Martin Mars waterbomber, the Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft and shuttle and a 1/48 V2, but just starting a 1/48 XF-85 Goblin.
Terry - A lot of work done these past two weeks, since Toshi is getting me up around 5:15. The Regult is getting decals and detail painting. The XP-47H is now in dull coat with some pastel work. I hope to have it finished the week after Wonderfest. I’m starting to paint the Yamato Dreadnaughts, with some fresh AV Game Air paints. Also, since I’ll be painting red I’ve started putting paint on a Crusher Joe Harpy fighter which has been awaiting paint for the better part of a year. Productivity!

WHAT WE ARE READING
Stuart - Same as before
Geoff - Finished Red November by W. Craig Reed. Good read about the submarine experiences during the Cold War. Started Operation Corporate by Martin Middlebrook - a history of the Falklands War. I don’t know a lot about that conflict, so this is quite interesting.
Terry - Still reading the same books. Travel and meetings have eaten into my lunch time.
