S4 E13 Ghosting

10/30/2023
Season 4 of the Grow Your Mind Podcast includes some bite-sized morsels of gold. These mini episodes are under 5 minutes during which two kids unpack a dilemma or the ethics of an idea. This bite-size, the kids are getting their best spooky voices on to talk about ghosting. Unlike the pretend monsters, vampires and ghosts of Halloween - the ghosting the kids are talking about is real. Ghosting is a term used to describe a situation whereby one friend ignores another completely, almost as though they no longer exist. It is confusing and unkind but it happens perhaps for reasons that aren’t always terrible. The kids share the message that even though it is hard to have a conversation with someone that might hurt their feelings, clear is kind. Did you know that Grow Your Mind is a wellbeing program you can get into your school? Written by teachers, for teachers, we have lesson plans, videos, animations, an album on Spotify full of non-painful yet life affirming songs AND we also have a few awards under our belt. S4 E12 We All Have It - for Mental Health Month

10/4/2023
This episode the kids share something we humans all share in common. And it’s not a reluctance to be wrong, nits or bad breath in the morning! We’ll give you a hint….Taylor Swift has it - and it’s not an extremely good singing voice. Can you guess what it is? It’s mental health. And you can think of it like a continuum. When our mental health is poor it can feel like being in a dark room with a torch light pointed at a lonely chair and nothing else. But when our mental health is fantastic, it’s like all the lights are switched on and you can see all your friends and family have been there all along. In this episode the kids interview the wise and articulate Annie Kershaw from R U OK? R U OK? is a public health promotion charity that encourages people to stay connected and have conversations that can help others through difficult times. Annie shares what to do if a friend is not okay and she reminds us all that every day is an opportunity to ask someone this simple but powerful question. Plus we have a NEW song and a hilarious story about a toxically positive snail! Did you know that Grow Your Mind is a wellbeing program you can get into your school? 9/20/2023
Season 4 of the Grow Your Mind Podcast includes some bite-sized morsels of gold. These mini episodes are under 5 minutes during which two kids unpack a dilemma or the ethics of an idea. And in this episode the kids are tackling how to get out of a trap. And for all those “Alone” or Bear Grylls enthusiasts, we’re sorry to report this trap isn’t a physical one. Instead it’s a mind trap - the if and then trap. It is however just as tricky to get out of as quicksand or a narrow cave! But luckily, we have some suggestions. Need a hint? Well this bite-size was created for World Gratitude Day on September 21, 2023. Did you know that Grow Your Mind is a wellbeing program you can get into your school? S4 E9 Good Enough

8/8/2023
Coming first in a race, topping your grade, being the main part in the play, making it into a selective class…..these are all fantastic things, but isn’t it equally fantastic to just be participating? Or is that a nonsensical idea that sounds good but is completely unrealistic? If we aren’t okay with being average, is that somehow putting pressure on all of us and perhaps our mental health too? What if we let go of being the best and celebrate being average and giving things a go? What would that look and feel like? S4 E8 The Recipe - For World Friendship Day, July 30

7/27/2023
Season 4 of the Grow Your Mind Podcast includes some bite-sized morsels of gold. These mini episodes are under 5 minutes during which two kids unpack a dilemma or the ethics of an idea. This bite-size, the kids are talking about friendships and how they can sometimes be unhealthy. ‘The Recipe’ is the kid’s solution to maintaining respectful relationships. Together they come up with a list of ingredients for a healthy, feel-good friendship. Guess what? Recent research by the University of Queensland found that women who have quality relationships in their 40s and 50s are less likely to develop multiple chronic conditions in older age. And in 2010, a meta-analysis by Holt Lunstad found that people with well established social connections had lower rates of heart disease, lower blood pressure, less abnormal inflammatory responses to stress, and lower rates of dementia. So let’s teach our kids how to have, keep and nurture healthy friendships. Did you know that Grow Your Mind is a wellbeing program you can get into your school? 7/13/2023
Season 4 of the Grow Your Mind Podcast includes some bite-sized morsels of gold. Our bite-sized episodes are under 5 minutes during which two kids unpack a dilemma or the ethics of an idea. This bite-size, our hosts try to get their heads around words - if they really matter that much and if we give them too much power or too little. This episode was created for International Non-Binary People’s Day on July 14, 2023. And the hosts of the show also discuss if we have too many international theme days and the significance of this one in particular. They kids are both trying to understand why words in this context might be so crucial. Please note, non-binary is an umbrella term for gender identities that sit within, outside of, across or between the spectrum of the male and female binary. A non-binary person might identify as gender fluid, trans masculine, trans feminine, a-gender or bi-gender. At Grow Your Mind we know that self-expression and being able to completely bring and be your whole self at work, in school or in the community is vital for enduring good mental health. S4 E5 The Problem We All Live With - For National Sorry Day

5/25/2023
This National Sorry Day, we have brought back a previous episode and it's probably best for upper primary school students. Miss Thea’s awesome class talks about racism, respect, empathy and curiosity. During the Meet The Experts section we hear from a bunch of truly wonderful kids from Gawura School, a Kindergarten to Year 6 school for local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in Sydney’s CBD. They share some interesting facts about their culture, as well as some words from their various language groups and they also read a powerful dreamtime story about listening and talking less. We thank and have huge respect for all the people having brave, awkward and important conversations with their children and communities. This episode was inspired by the words of Austin Channing Brown about being a better human and the joyful attitudes of the Gawura School kids. S4 E4 Threat, Challenge or Opportunity?

5/2/2023
Feeling anxious? Know someone else who is? You’re not alone! This episode is all about reclaiming the normality of feeling anxious. The kids interview the brilliant and wise Karen Young who began her career as a psychologist. Karen now consults with schools, parent groups and organisations both in Australia and internationally to support the mental wellbeing of young people. She’s also the author of four books, including the bestselling ‘Hey Warrior' and 'Hey Awesome’. Karen’s books and also her super helpful website Hey Sigmund provide creative strategies for parents to help kids manage anxiety and we’d love you to take a look. In this episode we encourage our young listeners to ask their Guard Dog ‘is this a threat, challenge or opportunity?’ whenever they feel nervous. And to help the kids out, we’ve collaborated again with the marvellous Moody to produce the song, ‘99 Times’ which may just answer that very question! To further contextualise this episode’s theme we've also got a story about a kid who almost misses their swimming carnival race because of the fear of not winning. Additional & free resources We’re sure that young and old(er) listeners will take away one of the numerous helpful and accessible strategies suggested in this episode. Be sure to grab a student reflection journal at GrowYourMind.Life so that your kids can think about their own triggers and ways to build their brave! And download our free themed colouring in sheets that go with each full length episode in Series 4. S4 E1 Consent is a two way street

2/26/2023
Welcome to Season 4! This season, we're changing things up a bit. Each episode, the kids interview clever adults who know a lot about each of the topics explored. And we're kicking off with an episode about consent. Consent education is part of the school curriculum and you can read our latest blog on why this is critical in primary school. In this episode and at primary school, consent education is taught age-appropriately. It doesn't involve sex education but rather explores permission, how to know if you want to say yes, how to say no, and how to make sure you receive a no with respect. Here at Grow Your Mind, we've been teaching the building blocks for consent since we began 6 years ago. Respectful friendships, emotional regulation, character strength education, emotional literacy, and listening to your body are key themes we teach in our program. This episode, the students at Woollahra Public School interview Yumi Stynes - feminist television and radio presenter, podcaster, author, incredible cook, and human. Her book, Welcome to Consent, was recently named amongst the New York Public Library's Top 50 books of the year. Along with Yumi's insights into the nuances of consent, there is also a story from the Guard Dog and the Sensitive Octopus about what enthusiastic consent really is and a brand new song in collaboration with Moody!
