To learn more about Don't Move Until You See It and get the free 5-day Conceptualizing Chess Series, head over to https://dontmoveuntilyousee.it/conceptualization FEN for today's exercise: 1q6/8/5b2/8/1n4p1/2p1Bk1p/5P2/5K1Q b - - 0 1 And the answer is... White has a Queen on h1. The lost piece must be a Queen in this puzzle. While a bishop could control the same squares, there is no legal way this position could be reached for a bishop. The bishop would have been on this same diagonal for Black’s last move, meaning Black would have had to play something illegal to reach this position. A Queen however could move to h1 from h2 or g1 to deliver checkmate.
