Hay Kranen is a freelance creative coder who creates digital things. He combines technical knowledge with a pragmatic approach and a creative angle and he is tinkering, hacking and balancing on the thin between art, data, tech and narrative.

Daniëlle Arets leads the Department Journalism and Responsible Innovation at Fontys Hogeschool Journalistiek Tilburg and the minor Design Research at Design Academy Eindhoven. Daniëlle works on the future of journalism through design research.

Florian Cramer is interested in thinking differently about publishing. He is known worldwide as an expert on communication through memes and anything in the line of experimental publishing and technology is his thing. Florian works at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam as a reader in Autonomous Practices, investigating "new, self-organized forms of art and visual culture outside the existing systems of art and design."

Alice Wong is a story designer and tutor at MA Information Design of Design Academy Eindhoven. She focuses on translating complex information into accessible stories. Her research focuses on understanding how our perception of reality is shaped.

Economist Eric Smit is cofounder of Follow the Money, a platform for investigative journalism. Follow the Money was started in 2009 with the aim of investigating people, organizations and systems that misbehave, especially financially and economically, or that seriously harm society. Follow the Money recently started its own theater tour, which even includes their own band. In their words: Muckraking meets rock 'n roll.

Tamara Witschge is lector Crossmedia at the Hogeschool van Amsterdam and she researches the interaction between art and journalism in an academic context.

Jake Charles Rees is curator at C I J, the Centre for Investigative Journalism in London. He researches the possibilities of a crossover between art and journalism, a field that comes close to what we have labelled as Designalism.

Mark Deuze is professor Mediastudies at the University of Amsterdam. Central to Deuze's work is critical reflection on the interaction between media and society, especially in the field of professional media production and media use.

Tobias Natterer has worked for DDB Berlin on the Uncensored Library. Using the popular video game Minecraft, articles that are forbidden in some countries, become accessible to everyone. This project is initiated by Reporters Without Borders, which fights for freedom of information.

Niels Schrader leads a MA at the Royal Academy of Arts in the Hague called Non Linear Narrative. He is interested in combining journalistic and forensic research with data, information technology and art.

Based in New York, Marisa Mazria Katz is a journalist and writer, covering culture and politics. She founded Creative Time Reports, which invited artists to give their perspectives on the news. She then became editorial director at Eyebeam Center for the Future of Journalism, that supports artists to produce innovative journalistic work.

Lara Ankersmit is deputy editor-in-chief of Het Financieele Dagblad, the Dutch equivalent of the Financial Times. Previously she was responsible for Digital Media at NOS, the Dutch Public Broadcasting Organisation, where -among others- she started an Innovation Lab. Lara Ankersmit has extensive experience in journalism, digital media and design.

René Sommer is Editor in Chief of Pointer, a programme for investigative journalism on Dutch public television. Pointer combines classic investigative journalism with data journalism, crowdsourcing and open source intelligence.

Yuri Veerman is a designer and artist who focuses on the meaning of signs and symbols we use in society. By playing with them and by using simple interventions such as changing contexts he reveals their true meanings.

This conversation was recorded on the 1st of April 2021. Annelys de Vet is a designer and co-founder of designlabel Disarming Design from Palestine (DDFP). It creates products that tell alternative stories about life under occupation. She has also made the Subjective Atlas, in which people map their surroundings from a subjective point of view.

We should probably regard July 14th 2014, as a historic day. It is the day Eliot Higgins started Bellingcat, an investigative website that uses open source tools to expose the truth behind global news stories. Bellingcat has changed research methods and investigative journalism forever.

Cream on Chrome is a collaboration of Martina Huynh and Jonas Althaus and they work at the cutting edge of journalism and design.

As a photographer, filmmaker and performance artist, Barbara Visser focuses on the tension between fact and fiction, on identity, on the relationship between original and copy. Recently she started F for Fact, a new curriculum at the Sandberg Institute of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam.

Forensic Architecture is a research agency that combines journalism with a deep knowledge of architecture. This combination has led to stunning results. Bob Trafford works at Forensic Architecture and he is specialized in open source research, data mining and analysis.

Angelique Spaninks is director of MU, Hybrid Art House in Eindhoven. The name MU is derived from a Japanese character that stands for synergy. That synergy characterizes the background of Angelique Spaninks: she has a background in both design and journalism.
