Recovering from the Trauma of Disease with Theresa Piela

6/27/2022
I have worked with many people with chronic health issues that have had a huge impact on their life in a negative way. Their illness, disease, lack of function has meant that they have had to miss out on their life in some way or meant they could not participate in life in the way that they wanted to. From being in chronic pain and unable to sit at a desk to work, to having chronic fatigue and being unable to get through the day. Many of them will tell me that they do not know who they are anymore and that they are but a shadow of their former self. Along with that comes a lot of feelings of despair, unfairness, hopelessness and a lot of time searching for the root cause or the next protocol to heal them. Of course I have felt like this too and so this episode is very personal to me. To get better, from whatever we want to, we have to find a place in our mind to get us into a different state. We have to flip a bit of a switch from despair into a place of hope, so that we can take action. And not the action of spending more time on google trying to find a solution, but the action of being a part of our life. Theresa Piela is an independent health researcher and brain rewiring coach. Theresa focuses on supporting the most complicated cases with “chronic illness” & trauma patterns that may have lost hope and the ability to connect to joy, as a result of their conditions. I am super excited to have Theresa on the show today for a few reasons. She has profoundly changed the life of a dear friend of mine, Kitty Blomfield, with her work; She has some tools that I don’t use with my clients but have always been super curious about because I have seen the benefits of them in clients; AND she and I both recovered from mold illness. In this episode Theresa is so kind as to do a demonstration so that you can have something to help shift out of that state straight away. We have put together a video for you, so you can see it and you can find that video here: https://youtu.be/hn7nAnzjsTM You can find Theresa Piela on instagram as @livingrootswellness She also has an app, Tapping with T. Her website is www.livingrootswellness.com Theresa and I would love to know if you got something out of this episode. Please let us know by sharing on instagram and tagging us in your stories. The Long Way Home with Amy Kate Bowe

6/7/2022
We’re going a bit off the topic of myths this week, because so many of you have been asking me, in terms of fitness, health and recovery, what is the long way home? What does that really mean? And I get that, because a goal needs to be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely otherwise it's just this obscure, arbitrary, vast unattainable thing way out in some time in the future, maybe never. My guest today, Amy Kate Bowe is a Strength and Conditioning Coach who was once like me and many of my clients, followers and listeners. She found herself at the bottom of the pit and had to get back up. You might see her on instagram doing all these completely amazing things with her body. Hanging, rope climbing, handstands, beautiful clean and snatches and with this beautiful athletic body, but one day she got injured and she had to start all the way from the bottom. What happened to her was not able to be overcome in a 12 week transformation or by setting an aesthetic goal. She had to take the long road home. Now in her Warrior School, she coaches women all over the world, to do just that. I have had the pleasure of working alongside Amy with some of her clients and I have seen first hand, their leaps and bounds forward in not just making aesthetic changes to their bodies, but first and foremost increasing their capability, capacity and performance for life, like no other. In this episode, we discuss. You can find Amy Kate Bowe on instagram as @amykatebowe I encourage you to listen to her podcast The Warrior School Podcast where you can here the facets of the Long Road Home broken down into bite size pieces as well as a multitude of tips and knowledge for your strength training. And don’t forget to check out her actual Warrior School https://warriorschool.carrd.co Remember to share your biggest takeaways on instagram and tag Amy and me. The Myths of Supplementation with Giorgi Dinkov

5/17/2022
Today we are talking all about supplements. The good the bad and the ugly. I will often see clients who have seen many people before me and some will come with a container of supplements that they have been prescribed or they have looked up on the internet and are taking for this and the other. So, are they really doing anything? Is it as simple as just looking at your blood test and saying, you’re low in vitamin X so take supplement X? Are you just wasting your money? Today, my guest is independent researcher Giorgi Dinkov, whose focus is on biochemistry and physiology. Giorgi has become a great resource for me, which has helped with so many clients, and so I wanted his biology and chemistry expertise to talk about all things supplementation. In this episode, we talk about: You can find all of Giorgi’s research on his blog www.haidut.me You can find his research products at www.idealabsdc.com See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Myths of the Skin with Emma Sgourakis

5/5/2022
Skincare has to be one of the biggest industries, turning over multi millions, billions, trillions of dollars per year. I would also say that it is one of the industries that is full of the most BS and preys on the vulnerabilities of both women and men and often I find clients are doing more harm than good with their skincare regimen. Be it an aging issue, or a condition like eczema, rosacea, melasma, pigmentation and the like. To me the skin is one of the biggest messengers in our body. And remember, The Body Never Lies Today, my guest is nutritionist and business woman, Emma Sgourakis who owns Saturee with Kitty Blomfield. In the wake of Saturee launching their new skincare line I really wanted to put her in the hot seat and ask her all about the skin from a nutritionist’s perspective, but also from someone who has spent the last three years researching and developing a product in the midst of an industry praying on our vulnerability of what’s happening to our face. Today, we’re going to talk today about how the Body Never Lies about what’s going on with our skin. The Myths of Diabetes Type 1 & 2 with Isaac Pohlman

4/19/2022
So once upon a time, Type 1 diabetes was known as something you were born with or developed as an infant or young child and Type 2 diabetes was known as being the one you developed from being overweight and living the high fat, high sugar, processed food and sedentary lifestyle. But I am seeing more and more that these are not the norms anymore. I have clients who don’t eat “bad food” and are pre-diabetic and I have clients with chronic blood sugar handling issues that have a myriad of issues and all that is being prescribed is metformin. And as my guest today will tell you, there are more and more young adults being diagnosed with Type 1 later in life. My guest today, Isaac Pohlman has a degree in Physiology, a Masters in Nutritional Science and is a Registered Dietitian. But he also has Type 1 Diabetes and hypothyroidism, both of which he developed in college. Today I want to ask him about his work specializing in people with blood sugar handling issues and insulin resistance ie some people have these issues and don’t have diabetes, why its happening and what we can do about it rather than cutting out entire food groups from our diet and going on drugs, that just cascade into needing more and more drugs. In this episode, we talk about: References: Broda Barnes Ray Peat Josh Rubin You can find Isaac on instagram as @isaacpohlman. The Myths of Back Pain with Donal Carr

4/5/2022
At the World Congress of Back Pain, it was said that nine in 10 people will have back pain at some point in their life. Of course that will occur in varying degrees. What I have seen a lot in my work, working with injuries as a CHEK practitioner, is that many people who have back injuries are given such a glass ceiling with their diagnosis and treatment options. So if nine in 10 of us are going to experience back pain, what can we do about it? For those who have it severely, what hope do we have? Why is there such a high incidence of back pain? And just what is safe as you know so many people are told never to deadlift again. Today, my guest is Donal Carr, Chek Faculty and CHEK Practitioner and wait for it, my first ever mentor in the fitness industry. You see, almost 20 years ago, Donal Carr interviewed me to be accepted as a Personal Trainer and he was in fact the reason that I became a CHEK practitioner. I have watched Donal rehabilitate some of the most complicated injuries over the years and it is my pleasure to have him here today on the show to discuss the Myths of Back Pain. In the episode we discuss: References: Hodges and Hyde Diane Lee Gary Gray Shirley Sahrmann Stuart McGill Paul Chek You can find Donal and his wife and business partner Cathy Carr at www.placeofchi.com and on instagram as @donalcarr and @placeofchi. The Myths of Menopause with Keith Littlewood

3/22/2022
I’m sorry to say that you guys have been asking for this episode for ages and it has taken Tommo and I this long to get to it. So I apologize. There really is not enough great info out there about menopause, but that is slowly changing and I hope Tommo’s amazing wealth of knowledge really helps you today. For those of you who don’t know, Keith Littlewood aka Tommo, is a friend and mentor of mine and has fast become our resident hormonal expert. He is currently doing his Phd in endocrinology (the study of hormones) and would love your support and for you to donate to his gofundme. And if you have not listened to his previous episodes, you're going to find out why his work is so important. There is a significant amount of misinformation and poor applications in medicine in relation to Hormonal Replacement Therapy, especially with Thyroid, but also reproductive issues in general and menopause. Today we are going to be exploring those around menopause, especially the erroneous idea of Oestrogen being an appropriate application. We’re going to be talking about just why women suffer - some more than others. And I’m really hoping that this is going to be listened to by women of all ages, because it is in fact years of cumulative lifestyle and environmental factors that contribute to how we shall in fact go through the change and what our health will be like afterwards So, share this one with your daughters, your sisters and your mothers so that we can all live long healthy lives with great bone mineral density, thyroids and muscle mass. In this episode we talk about: References: Katharina Dalton You can donate to Tommo’s independent research project at www.balancedbodymind.com Tommo and I would love to hear what you got out of this episode. The Myths of Personal Training with Ross Gilmour

3/8/2022
I think the biggest myth in Personal Training or the exercise field is if I just turn up and sweat and do something that is exhausting, I will get the result of getting fitter, leaner, stronger, whatever it is that you desire. Another one would be that if I just get my heart rate up I am going to be healthier and that people who do so are fit. I am finding all too often now, when I'm working with clients who suffer from thyroid, adrenal, metabolic issues or even clients with injuries, that their personal trainer also bases their practice on this belief. Well, today on the show is Ross Gilmour from Better Body Collective. I had the pleasure of working with Ross on a client who was not having the ideal response that they should have been having. This was easily spotted by Ross because of his intricate training program and measurements of progress, success and recovery. Now because he had so much data, he made my job super easy. I think he also saved the client money, because I was not needed as much, plus together we did get them a result. So I invited him on the show to talk today about his methods and practice, which I think set a gold standard for Personal Training. In this Episode we talk about: Ross Gilmouris available for training clients and mentoring personal trainers. I encourage you to get in contact with him. He also has his own podcast called Better Body Radio. You can find him on Instagram as @coachrossgilmour Ross and I would love to know if you got something out of this podcast. The Myths of Men’s Health with Jay Feldman

2/15/2022
I feel like we have spent a lot of time on the show, talking about women’s physiology and general physiology and how the body never lies about health, but I wanted to dedicate and episode for men specifically. Can men really tolerate stress more than women - physiological speaking? Is fasting more suitable for them? Why do men get man boobs? Why can’t some men put on muscle mass? Is there really such a thing as Andropause? Are fish oils going to save men from neurodegenerative disease and heart issues? What about the rage or even an inability to express rage? What does this all say about men and their health, specifically? Well today, I have back on the show, Jay Feldman to talk all about men’s health. And fellas, if this is your first time here, you might really like to go back and listen to Jay’s interview on the Myths of the Liver as a good follow up to this one. In this episode we discuss: Please have a listen to Jay’s podcast, “The Energy Balance Podcast”, where he has a whole series of episodes on mens’ health. The Myths of Exercise Intolerance with Libby Wescombe

2/3/2022
So what if you exercise and you have a negative side effect to exercise? You might experience fatigue post workout, odema, trouble sleeping, night sweats or even DOMS for days. Or you might just not be able to put on muscle or lose weight no matter how much you exercise. Well, this is something I have seen in my work for 19 years but has been recently been coined “exercise intolerance” in the pro-metabolic community and along with it has stemmed a whole further list of myths like “cardio is bad for you” and left a whole group of people feeling like they will never be able to deal with stress. Another cohort is frustrated with the knowledge that to be healthy, you need muscle mass, but then any time they push the weights, they are having these negative reactions. So what is this all about? Is there really such a thing as exercise intolerance? Why does it happen and what do we do about it? Well, back on the show today is one of my favourite muscle building experts and nutritionists, Libby Wescombe and we’re going to tell you everything you need to know about getting out of this funk. In this episode: Please head to Libby’s website www.libbywescombe.com to download her FREE Aerobic Recovery Handout so you can get started on building your recovery base. The Myths of the Liver with Jay Feldman

11/30/2021
Liver health is a big focus in the holistic health world. Yet, I am seeing more and more that "healthy people" who eat "whole foods" are suffering from issues such as Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, Diabetes, Thyroid Issues etc. I am also seeing that a lot of people are doing liver detoxes to boost their immunity for the current health issue of our time and that these programs involve cutting out food groups and/or significant supplementation. So why is this and does it even work? Do we even need to detoxify our livers? Is detoxifying the liver really the answer to strong immunity? Why are seemingly healthy people having liver issues? Well, I invited Jay Feldman on the show to talk about exactly what the liver is, what its function is and what it needs to operate at its highest capacity Jay is a health coach and an Independent researcher who set out to study medicine at university so that he might become a doctor, but after seeing the modern medical perspective - a this for that approach to fight against our bodies - he moved into studying energetics and physiology so that he could teach people to harness their energy and work with their bodies. You can catch a more in-depth look at the liver on his podcast, The Energy Balance Podcast, where he has a six part series on the liver if you're hungering for more after this episode and if you head over to Jay's blog at www.jayfeldmanwellness.com , you will see just how meticulous he is in his research and writings. In this episode we talk about: I hope this episode dispels a lot of myths and confusion and helps you remember that The Body Never Lies. I would love it if you would comment below or share in your stories what your biggest takeaway was and tag @jfwellness and me. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Myths of Fertility and Pregnancy with Loren de la Cruz

11/16/2021
Fertility and pregnancy, birthing and mothering are high energy demanding processes. I think we really take for granted just how much our body needs to make and recover from having babies. There are so many myths around this area of a woman’s life and I think a lot of them leave women fraught with emotions, guilt, shame, disempowerments and to be honest, long term health issues. My wish is for women to learn about their bodies more to have empowered lives and so I really wanted to dismantle all these myths around fertility and pregnancy. My guest today, Loren de la Cruz, is a Nutritionist specialising in preconception, prenatal, pregnancy and postpartum nutrition, from all backgrounds, but she does have a specialty for helping couples with metabolic issues like thyroid and autoimmune conditions. Today we are talking about all the Myths around Fertility, Conception, Pregnancy and beyond. The Myths of Pelvic Floor and Abdominal Wall with Joelene Murdoch and Tamara Woods

11/2/2021
There was something that I put off for years and years. My body was telling me it was out of balance, but I ignored it until I got really motivated about it. I had a super tight pelvic floor. It needed manual therapy to release it and retraining on my part to get it functional again and it wasn’t until I wanted to have a baby without any intervention, to protect my precious parts and my future in all the lifting I like to do, that I did something about it. It was a bit like an accountant not doing their taxes, but hey, you know. Joelene Murdoch and Tamara Woods from the Physiotherapy Clinic were the two women who were integral in my journey to overcome years of dysfunction, have the birth I wanted and come back to lifting and training, even stronger than before. They also look after a lot of my Sydney clients, some without babies, some during pregnancy and some many years and years after the fact. Like most topics on this show, I feel there are a lot of misconceptions about the pelvic floor and the abdominal wall, as well as a barrage of programs and prescriptions that misunderstand it, confuse the consumer and oftentimes, make it worse. So today, on The Body Never Lies, Tamara, Jo and I are diving into all things pelvic floor and the abdominal wall. In this episode, we talk about: You can find Jo and Tamara at the Physiotherapy Clinic in Sydney. Please check out their birth course for expecting families and practitioner courses and mentorship programs for exercise professionals and physiotherapists. https://www.physiotherapyclinic.com.au You can find them on instagram @physotherapyclinic @bornready_physioclinic and @physioclinic_education See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Myths of PCOS and Endometriosis with Jessica Ash

10/19/2021
Getting diagnosed with PCOS and/or Endometriosis can feel like a life sentence for some. I’ve seen two kinds of camps. One where women have been having issues with their cycle or periods and getting diagnosed and feeling like it was a really deflating, non solution answer and others who really struggle with the debilitating symptoms of either condition with repetitive surgery and medications. There are of course many band-aid approaches, like the pill and lots of dietary recommendations like quitting sugar, dairy, gluten etc, (and I say bandaid because as soon as you take off said bandaid, the wound opens up again), but what is the cause of these hormonal issues and how do we really overcome them so we can have beautiful, healthy reproductive systems and hormones? Jessica Ash is a Clinical Nutritionist, Functional Diagnostic Nutritionist and Holistic Health Coach and her course “Fully Nourished” has helped thousands of women overcome hormonal issues like PCOS, Endometriosis, rebalance their hormones after coming off birth control as well as solve underlying thyroid and hormonal issues. The Myths of Healthy Fats with Matt Blackburn

10/5/2021
Ok, so what is healthy fat? We moved away from trans fats like margarine and cooking oils, but just because a fat is not a trans fat, does not mean it is healthy. Someone who has moved deep into the study of fats, especially PolyUnsaturated Fats or PUFAs, is Matt Blackburn. Matt is a health and longevity researcher and founder of the CLF Protocol, looking at what he believes to be the root cause of disease, calcification, lipofuscin and fibrosis. One of the huge things his program deals with, of course, is an indepth look at PolyUnsaturated Fatty Acids: what they are, what foods they are in - they are actually in a lot of “health foods” - how to balance them and how to detox from them. So today we’re going to be talking about all the different fats and how The Body Never Lies to us about fat for optimal metabolism and health. In this episode, Matt and I discuss: Matt hangs out on Instagram mostly as @mattblackburn but you can find out more about his protocol, Mitolife Academy and Mitolife supplements at www.matt-blackburn.com And don’t forget to subscribe to his podcast Mito Life Radio where you’ll hear some familiar friends, but also some super interesting guests. The Myths of Body Composition and Performance with Libby Wescombe

9/21/2021
So we have touched on sustainable weight loss with Kitty and Craig last episode, but now I want to get into the nitty gritty of body composition. So, say you are training consistently and you’re at a relatively acceptable weight, but you have a certain look you want to achieve. You want that toned and defined look and in your head it equates to eating less and training more. But does it in reality? And how does that work in the athletic space when we need to perform well at a particular sport, or when you just really like lifting or performing at a high intensity and don’t want to go into that stressed state that we’ve talked about in so many other episodes. Well I couldn’t think of anyone better to talk about this with than Libby Wescombe. Libby is a Sydney-based Personal trainer, Nutritionist, CrossFit Coach and ex Cross Fit Athlete with over ten years experience working with female clients to achieve their fitness and nutrition goals. Libby is on a mission to bring back common sense in an industry full of hype and aims to help women break free from the confusion that keeps them stuck in an unhealthy way of thinking so they can live healthier, happier, freer lives. In this episode, we discuss: If you got something out of the episode, I would love you to share your takeaways on instagram and tag me, @leilalutz and @libbywescombe and post in your stories. The Myth of Calorie Restriction Kitty Blomfield and Craig McDonald

9/7/2021
Now I think most of my audience and followers know Kitty Blomfield. She’s my no BS metabolic bestie who rants on and on about getting off the restrictive diet hamster wheel, so you can build a body you love. Well, Kitty and her super duper business partner and life partner, Craigh McDonald, have coached hundreds of people through their win at life program. Now if you listened to my interview with nutritionist, Kira Sutherland and how to apply nutrition research into practice, you will know that most research studies are done for only 6 weeks and for us practitioners who have worked with clients over long periods of time and poured over months of food logs, we would argue that the data we have collected on sustainable weight loss is definitively more relative. Craigh and Kitty have coached hundreds of women through their program. Hundreds of women have put in their weekly data of food and subjective measures, not just weight loss, but health measures and they have achieved phenomenal weight loss transformations. And so I had to have Kitty and Craig on the show to get the low down on healthy sustainable weight loss and what it takes to get off the diet merry go round and build a body you love. Now, Kitty and Craig have their next break free challenge coming up and enrolments close 27th of September. So if you would like to have the amazing experience of working with them on your food and exercise for four weeks, so that you can break free from restrictive diets and build a body you love, please click here to join the waitlist. https://www.nustrength.com.au/bfc-waitlist And if you got something out of this episode, please let us know. The Myths of Adrenal Fatigue with Josh Rubin

8/10/2021
Josh Rubin’s interview on episode one, was one of the most popular in the series, so I gather most of you know him well. Honestly, I just love working with him anyways, so whether you guys liked him or not, he was coming back. Josh is a CHEK Level 4, Certified Nutritionist and is about to complete his studies in Osteopathic Medicine. If you don’t know Josh yet, I highly recommend you listen to his first interview on Metabolism and look him up as @realfoodganstas on Instagram. Josh has been helping people heal, using nutritional foundations, from metabolic issues such as thyroid disease and various fatigue syndromes for many years. Adrenal Fatigue is a term coined by the functional medicine practice. It has been helpful in many ways in recognising that there is such a thing as physiological burnout. We need to make space for that or we will never heal. But Josh and I really share the view that the blanket diagnosis and protocol skims the surface and may limit you in terms of recovery. Today we would like to discuss the adrenals and what they do and if they really can get fatigued or not. We also talk about what we need to do to get out of this syndrome that allows you to return to a fully nourished and energetic state, enjoying life. In this episode we discuss: I highly recommend Josh’s program, the RTN Method. He and his wife Jeanne are available for one on one and group sessions and you can find them at www.eastwesthealing.com and on instagram as @realfoodgangstas. If you took something away from this episode, I would love it if you shared it on instagram and tagged @realfoodgangstas and @leilalutz I would also be so grateful if you would rate and review the podcast. The Myths of Pathology with Keith Littlewood

What happens when you go to the doctor and your bloods all look normal, but you are still feeling suboptimal? I have clients who feel chronically ill, fatigued and hormonal, yet at a glance, they can appear normal on standard blood tests. So what then? Well, this is one of the reasons I started The Body Never Lies because there just are too many people coming to me with this story and I am sure that is the same for my guest Keith Littlewood. You might remember Keith, aka Tommo from the last series. He has a masters in endocrinology and is currently embarking on his PhD in endocrinology. If you’d like to donate to his much needed research project, please scroll down for the link In this episode we discuss: You can find Keith Littlewood on instagram as @tommolittlewood and at www.balancedbodymind.com I highly recommend his Functional Endocrinology course if you are a practitioner and he also has a great course for the general population wanting to increase their knowledge and understanding of health. The Foundations of Nutrition Application with Kira Sutherland

7/13/2021
It is so confusing as a consumer, to know which nutrition protocol is right for you. The market is oversaturated with different diets and protocols and with the rise of social media, it is saturated with all types of practitioners and influences. How do you know what to do? Well, I think as a consumer, you have to get smarter and filter out the BS. I have had clients come to me telling me the most outrageous things they have been advised to do, from doctors, from dieticians, from health coaches, you name it. The qualification does not make the practitioner great. It is the application of the practice. There are, I believe, some fundamentals that need to be the absolute baseline for getting a result with nutrition and today’s episode is all about that. I hope at the end of this, you can be more discerning about what you do and who you work with and if you’re a practitioner go that extra mile for your clients. Kira Sutherland is a Naturopath and Sports Nutritionist with more than 25 years in clinical practice. Her focus in performance nutrition led her to be the first Naturopath in Australia to undertake the International Olympic Committees diploma in sports nutrition. She is also the 2019 winner of the BioCeuticals Integrative Medicine Award for Excellence in practice (Nutrition/Dietetics). And she is someone I look up to for a few reasons. She harps on about the basics to both her students and patients, she’s a stickler for food logs and measuring physiology and performance and she is amazing in what she does for female athletes as “women are not small men”. Kira divides her time between clinical practice, lecturing at the undergraduate level, and mentoring practitioners of complementary medicine in the application of holistic sports nutrition. I hope you enjoy this episode with Kira Sutherland. In this episode we discuss: Kira practices clinically in Sydney, lectures in undergraduate studies, mentors nutritionists and also is a keynote speaker.
