Kaplan, a Senior Fellow and Marvin Bower Professor of Leadership Development, Emeritus at the Harvard Business School, is co-developer of both activity-based costing (ABC) and the Balanced Scorecard (BSC). Kaplan joined the HBS faculty in 1984 after spending 16 years on the faculty of the business school at Carnegie-Mellon University, where he served as Dean from 1977 to 1983. He now also works as an advisor to the Palladium Group. Dr Kaplan is a man who made strategy a little simpler for all of us alongside his colleague David Norton with the introduction of the Balanced Score Card. A concept every business leader should be aware of and one that we define and explain at the start of our discussion. Robert has now evolved the score card concept to support organisations in contending with what he sees as every increasing “Societal & environmental Obligations” at a time when the the UK still has serious issues with Covid, child poverty, adult learning, unemployment & digital inequalities. We discussed how business have worked in their community to manage these issues but also the societal pressures on pharmaceutical giants rolling out the vaccine right now - it might be a good idea to look at past lessons learnt from the HIV and AIDs epidemic.
