Instagram Reels that don't suck. The Photographer's guide.

3/19/2024
It's 2024. The landscape of instagram and tik-tok (RIP?) and X (twitter?) and Facebook (is that still a thing?) is exhausting. It's a daily shift of what is trending and how to utilize the right audio, the right format, the right hashtags at the right times so that people even (gasp) see the work. If you're exhausted with even trying to wander through the darkness of social media you're not in the minority. The fact of the matter is the days of posting a photo, a super deep quote, and sitting back and watching clients roll in are over and catchy reels seem to be here to stay for awhile. Before you spend hours designing reels in Adobe or downloading some horrible tacky app that Instagram lowkey penalizes you for using anyway we're bringing in the expert in Instagram Reels to walk us through the future. Angela isn't JUST the founder and CEO of Social Templates, she's also a really talented photographer with a long history of taking beautiful images and getting those images into the hands of the right couples. This chat is all about the practicality of the future and how important being intentional with social media can be. This in depth conversation is all about the growth of this idea. How Angela went from being an educator at WPPI to being a brand on the tradeshow floor and how you as a photographer can benefit from utilizing better instagram strategies in 2024 to reach the clients you're searching for. For more info about Angela and Social Templates follow them on Instagram @socialtemplates.co and when you drop them a DM make sure you tell them we sent you! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mwbpodcast/support

Working Mom Photographers. You got this.

11/30/2023
Momtogs you're doing a good job! I'm not just talking to the hobby shooters (though you're doing a great job too) but to the huge population of wildly talented, super busy, keep all the balls in the air kids to school lunches prepped laundry folded while also shooting editing and absolutely slaying the photography world women out there. This episode was supposed to be for you - and then, April started talking and I realized... --We all need to hear this stuff.-- An episode full of truth and totally relatable stories and struggles and tiny wins from April Payne, a Houston based wedding and portrait photographer who is as humble as she is talented. So many people in this industry come to the end of fall and absolutely collapse from exhaustion. We burn ourselves out every year trying to strike while the irons hot in our minds but this episode really opens up the truth of how quickly success can show up when you just keep moving the needle forward a little at a time and surround yourself with people who believe in you. April's perspectives here are absolutely powerful. "I can do the scary stuff" is a mantra that has taken her from a brand new photographer to a completely in demand brand in only a few years all while managing to keep her marriage, her home, and her family front of mind. This interview is a great chance to reset our priorities coming into the holidays and a slower season for most of the photo industry and audit our goals and who we're surrounding ourselves with for support. Make sure you check out April's work https://aprilmpaynephotography.com/ and consider joining her and a whole community of like minded, positive, encouraging photographers in one of our small groups simply by visiting https://www.facebook.com/groups/photographiccollective.mwb This episode is sponsored by the raddest preset pack ever released. https://www.gpresets.com/product/abidepresets/ Get the ABIDE preset pack from Miles Witt Boyer Presets today and then DM me @mileswittboyer or @mileswittboyerpresets on insta your before and after images for a chance at being featured! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mwbpodcast/support

She is a force. Vanessa Joy is everywhere. Canon Explorer of Light. The founder of The Photo Insiders. Prolific speaker, personality, educator. Sought after wedding photographer. Vanessa Joy is a pretty remarkable brand but behind all of that she is this really approachable, humble, beautiful human finding her way through success and failure in the most relatable way. The last lightroom presets you'll never need?

9/21/2023
This is the come back tour. The episode where we talk through what Jared and I have been up to over the last few months as we've taken a short break from this podcast and tackled a project we've been dreaming up for years. It's a cool look into the world of color science, what quality editing looks like for photographers in 2023 and how we partnered with one of the coolest brands to design what we truly feel like are the most versatile and beautiful Lightroom presets on the market and the best part? They're not even available for another week which means that listeners of this episode will be a few of the first to get their hands on them. After over a year of going strong with the PhotoCo podcast, a booming community in the Photographic Collective facebook group, constantly evolving conversations and small group trainings in the PhotoCo Slack Channels and now ABIDE the first official preset pack by Miles Witt Boyer and GPresets it's safe to say there's a few balls in the air. Shooting the Streets of New York with Derek Fahsbender

7/6/2023
Don't call him a street photographer. Derek Fahsbender is a legend in the Bronx and a familiar smile on the other side of the street in neighborhoods all over New York City. His bold approach to shooting the faces and the spaces of the city he calls home has shaped not only his own portfolio but the work of countless other shooters who call the streets of New York home. Close friends with icons of the genre like Phil Penman and Rinzi Ruiz what makes Derek's work unique is a truly intentional approach to his composition and an unbelievable ability to make people comfortable with him in pretty uncomfortable situations. He has a bold opinion about success, an unapologetic perspective on how to push your own work forward, and the backing of a few of the most known brands and retailers on earth standing right behind him and if that isn't enough to convince you that this conversation is worth hearing I can personally promise you, his vulnerability and humility will. One of my closest friends in the photography industry this was a chat I've been waiting to have publicly for a long time. Typically held over a whiskey at a tiny bar in New York or tucked away from the crowds over dinner at WPPI in Las Vegas my friendship with Derek has been filled with these conversations from the very beginning and I'm pretty excited to be able to share a deeper side of Derek with the world. Take a moment to check out Derek's work here : https://www.likeamacheen.com/ Grab your copy of the Twenty Twenty book here : https://www.blurb.com/b/10902233-twenty-twenty-standard-edition Follow Derek on Instagram here : https://www.instagram.com/likeamacheen --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mwbpodcast/support

A SECOND CHANCE AT LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF ALISON CONKLIN.

6/5/2023
"I never thought I would live to see 42" Alison's story is one of ultimate perspective. In her first episode on this podcast we dived into a story filled with creative perspective and intentional, thought provoking heart. Before Alison found her wedding photography on the covers of major magazines like Martha Stewart Weddings chalking up awards and international attention from a few of the largest photography brands on earth she was a grieving teenager processing the loss of her mom at 42 years old by learning to develop old film negatives of her alongside her dad in a makeshift darkroom in their house. At 13 she found out she carried the same genetic heart disorder and what she thought would be an inevitable expiration date ticked closer and closer this last year. We interview Alison on a "bonus day" in the 200's. That's 2/3 of a year after she survived the unthinkable, setting her camera aside and undergoing a full heart transplant after her heart hit nearly 100% failure. Perspective is a powerful thing. Sitting down with Alison for this interview felt altogether different and yet somehow familiar. This is still the brilliant artist with the big smile and remarkable purpose behind her work but now with literally a new heart beating inside of her chest. Don't miss this opportunity to hear her story, to lean into the lessons she's learned about how important the photos of the people we love are, and to simply listen to her process her own story and learn to accept that this new lease on life is one she never knew she would have. Alison Conklin is a Philadelphia (area) based wedding and commercial photographer. She is a Fujifilm X Photographer and her work can be seen here https://www.alisonconklin.com/ or via her Fujifilm profile page here https://fujifilm-x.com/en-us/photographers/alison-conklin/ She can also be found over in the large group for the Photographic Collective, a community packed with positive, purpose filled photographers from around the globe. THE FILM MAKER YOU NEVER KNEW YOU ALWAYS NEEDED.

5/11/2023
Let's get down to it. Hustle is not appreciated nearly enough. Sitting down in this interview with Chris from LVL13 Wedding Films based in New Jersey to simply appreciate what hard work turns into. Chris' story is really interesting and his work is some of my favorite I've ever seen in the wedding video industry but it's his humility, his work ethic, and his character that show up in this conversation. We're flooded with big egos in the photo/video world these days. There's a general approach to success that says that you don't need to make it if you can convincingly fake it for long enough and Chris is a refreshing answer to that. He's a successful guy but it's not the success that drives him. Creating work he's proud of along side close friends for clients he connects with all so that he can provide for a family that he loves; this dude has his head on straight and this conversation could easily serve as a clear reminder that there really are some remarkable names out there you may not have heard of yet. We'll be chatting about this episode in the private Slack Channels for PHOTOCO Small Group members this week as we unpack the difference between Hustle and Grind and would love to keep all of our listeners up to date in the Photographic Collective Facebook Group. 5/3/2023
She’s like the wizard of oz of the wedding industry. The founder of Junebug Weddings and the Worlds Best Wedding Photographers. YOUR PHOTOS DON'T SUCK, YOUR CULLING DOES. (Special Guests James + Kyle from Narrative)

4/6/2023
Curate. It's that word that people don't want to hear, but need to. The challenge here is simple : are you showing work that communicates your value to the right people, in the right ways, at the right times? Are you leaving your best work on the editing floor or including too much? Are your processes for editing and post production stuck in the early 2000's? Are you actually getting any better or is every Uncle Joe snagging a camera at Cost Co catching up to you? Before you get all down on yourself consider this : maybe as a photographer you're best work just isn't being found hidden down deep amongst the most obvious stuff. Maybe just like your favorite band ever, it's the deep cuts that say the most about you as an artist. Sitting on this episode with two absolute legends. James Broadbent founded Narrative to solve the problems that photographers all over the world are facing. From the headaches of blogging to managing the culling and cataloging process outside of Lightroom this is a dude with incredible vision and insight and right along side him we bring in Kyle Wilson, wedding photographer, artist, and Narrative team member to spit ball together the way curating work can elevate it's value. This chat is filled with so many nuggets of wisdom and perspective we should probably charge for it, but instead we're going to give it away for free and then ask you to do a few things with this info! TELLING PEOPLE'S STORIES. Ft. Special Guest Garrett Hubbard

3/1/2023
From documentary photography on the other side of the world to high fives with President Obama, mountain biking adventures to working with the press Garrett has chased down the stories of humans all over the world. His eye for photography shaped early on influenced by a love for culture and an education from one of the world's most prestigious photography schools Garrett's story comes alive as he starts to talk about finding his place in the world. We asked Garrett to be a part of this podcast because of just a sliver of his story. Leaving the Washington DC area to move closer to a place where his passion for mountain biking and the outdoors could be a more prominent part of his family's life but what we got out of him was more than Jared and I could possibly have expected. A story of intentionality, willingness to learn, humility, and so many amazing successes along the way. The simple fact is that Garrett Hubbard as a photographer, a film maker, a director, a father, and a husband is a man that we can all learn from as he so calmly describes his craft through the vein of it's value to sharing the stories of other people - to other people. I walked away from this interview with a keen appreciation for the talent and the accomplishments of the people who quietly drive our industry forward always more focused on doing a good job than getting praise for it. Perhaps what strikes the hardest about this interview with Garrett is his willingness to give credit to the people from all over the country that have simply opened doors for him to walk through. Community is a critical element to success and Garrett Hubbard is absolutely willing to share his success with the people who have contributed to it. https://www.garretthubbard.com/ PhotoCo and the Photographic Collective Podcast are productions of The Photographic Collective LLC ©2023. G PRESETS AND THE FUTURE OF PHOTO EDITING. || Special Guest Greg Petersen.

1/20/2023
Everybody has heard of GPresets. Like everybody. These Lightroom presets are stylistic and edgy and as if the signature packs aren't rad enough they've somebody partnered with a few of the coolest photographers in the world to match and sell their color science as well. This episode isn't about G though, at least not directly. It's about Greg. The guy behind GPresets. Greg is this brilliant musician turned photographer turned entrepreneur in Northern California who has spent the last several years simply helping photographers get more out of their images. This chat was really laid back and unplugged just getting to know Greg and talking through what the industry has been like through a different perspective over the last few years and though we didn't pack this thing with actionable tips on ways you can get better as photographer if you listen closely you'll soak up some really powerful knowledge from a guy who has conquered a lot of the wedding and photography world on his journey to the top. If you liked this episode, or any episode of the Photographic Collective Podcast please leave us a five star rating and a solid review and make sure you join the Photographic Collective. It's a free to join community of photographers from all over the world coming together to encourage and support each other along side a small group and 1TO1 training program hosted by Miles Witt Boyer. The best podcast moments of 2022. Cohosted by Miles + Jared

1/11/2023
It was a year filled with absolute growth. The photo industry boomed coming out of the Covid hole and somehow riding that wave Jared convinced me to start this little podcast that would end up growing into a bit of a movement. Here we are so many seasons in with the who's who of guests behind us and we couldn't think of a better way to kick off 2023 than to rehash last year. Our favorite guests, photographers, film makers, and industry professionals. Our favorite moments, quotes, and tid bits. Our favorite memories jumping head first into the world of educations, community coordinators, and obviously podcasters. This episode was a blast to record and a chance to really expose our listeners to the guy behind so much of the magic at PhotoCo. Jared will be helping to host more often moving forward as well as helping me shape the way the PhotoCo community, small group trainings, workshops, and courses come together! A huge start to the year and a huge opportunity to share what we're most excited about as this humbling, exciting, and wild ride continues beneath us! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mwbpodcast/support
