What's the best way to correct your dog?

3/16/2024
In our society we want to let people know when they made a mistake because we think this is necessary for the person to learn. But how do you feel when someone call you out, even if in a gentle way? Shameful, embarrassed, guilty, sometimes even angry and frustrated. Very few times I felt good when someone said I shouldn’t so something. This inhibits learning and have a huge impact on the process of achieving the goal. However, this is something that is ingrained in us and it’s difficult to change in our brains. I work on this on myself everyday and I’m very careful to not shut down the person when trying to repair the damage or control the damage that was done. This could be that I gave a certain instruction to a client and the person have done something completely different or when my partner puts the cups on the mug cupboard. Doesn’t matter, depending on the way you approach this you’ll have different results. The question here is: is it the most effective and best way to get results in your dog training? And the answer is to divert the attention from the mistake to new instructions! I explain how this works in dog behaviour in this episode. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/positivedogtraining/message

Resentment is a red flag

2/29/2024

I will answer today why this happens and how to avoid it. Resentment is the light turning up in the panel to tell you that you need to attend to this. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/positivedogtraining/message

Nervous system, puppies and co regulation

2/14/2024
Today's episode we talked about the nervous system and the estates that our dogs go into. Knowing this is super important so we can care for their wellbeing and make sure they are in the optimal arousal level when we want to train or have focus! Also, we talked about what is regulation and how to regulate our dogs which is very different than training. By the end we got into the cues and type of training we need to focus when dogs are puppies to ensure they will be happy and not have behaviour issues. How to get your dog more confident and less frustrated

1/31/2024
This week I had an experience that brought us to this episode. I was struggling to do a task and I revisited some of my old-friends-behaviour-analysis-books to read a concept that I knew would help me to start this difficult task, as helped many dogs and patients of mine when they were struggling. So I’m sure you’ll love this. This concept is behavioural momentum. Watch episode to apply to your life! If you want to know more about this and learn how to train your dog properly without having set backs, we have group classes starting soon and I also can help you to apply this in your reactivity training in 1-2-1 consultations. if you go to my website you can know more about my work and what I offer. the website is positivedoglondon.com and my instagram is instagram.com/positivedoglondon --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/positivedogtraining/message

How to train SA like a PRO

1/25/2023
I’ll teach you today how to training SA like a pro. I’m quite excited for this one, so lets start! SA it’s all about asking questions, hearing the answers and responding accordingly. And for you to train like a pro, you need to know how to write a training plan! OH YESSSSS! this is the secret of success. but what is that? it’s a sheet or spreadsheet with some information you will organise and plan beforehand and follow while you’re in a training session. We’ll use this plan while training and after to analyse and compare how our dog is doing. So forget about doing this in your head. no need to be resistant to this. I promise that will make your training much better, so do it and keep track of it :) --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/positivedogtraining/message

Breaks, inconsistency and pressure in Separation anxiety training

9/14/2022
We take breaks because you're anxious and then we go in a holiday, pause the training, work, life and when you get there you get anxious for taking a pause! hahahaha Who never? I bet loads of people are nodding their heads while hearing this and thinking, ME TOO! But we feel like that because we know that consistency is key. Consistency is important for training. Trainings is all about repetitions and dogs learn through repetitions. But it's specially good for anxiety - routine, reliable cues and knowing what is going to happen is great for anxious dogs. They do well in environments where they can predict what is going to happen. So there's a lot of talk about consistency in training and this is certainly important for Separation anxiety. Consistency speeds up the training, makes the dogs more relaxed when alone and how us to increase the duration we can leave them for. This is where the pressure comes from. It's rooted in this idea that we need to perform in the optimum state at all times. Is it realistic, tho? no! We will take breaks. And they can be awesome. They can help a lot dogs that are having a hard time in training or in life. breaks can decrease the stress hormones and they it can take our dogs out of the stress loop. what I mean by stress loop is that when your dog is super anxious, any easy training looks hard in your dog's eyes and makes them even more in the edge. it's a cycle that ends up feeding that anxiety. Breaks are not villains!!! Problem is when breaks become so often that they are the new routine. When we're not in the mood, we take a break. When we're having a busy week, we take a break. When we have plans with friends, we take a break. It's more like a long break with a few training sessions in the middle. This inconsistency doesn't help your anxious dog because your dog can't predict what will happen and how it will happen and for how long it will happen. So your training looks very confusing for both of you. This is when your training gets hit and miss, basically because your plan is pretty much hit and miss. Here comes the guilt and the pressure, the next main characters in my story. You will convince yourself you are a TERRIBLE parent and that this is taking too long! Self pitty isn't the way forward, neither is pressure. This is the point when frustration kicks in the and pressure is almost certainly the next step. You'll think: "I'm done with this, I'll increase the duration because I REALLY need to get this done." or you'll put pressure in yourself to do it everyday and get even more frustrated because you won't do it. Pause here for reflexion. Why is it pressure so bad? If your dog is telling you that he/she can't do more than x amount of time or if you are not having results you wanted or if you are not finding the time to do it, forcing it won't change the fact that you and/or your dog are not being able to do this. Don't get stuck in this part of the process. You need to change something at this point. You can't do the same thing and expect different results. Let's analyse your training and see what we can change :) --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/positivedogtraining/message

Malena DeMartini - Can I leave my dog while training SA?

3/16/2022
I’m super excited today about having Malena DiMartini on the podcast. There’s not a better person to talk about SA than her. (As you can see I admire her a lot.) Malena is an expert on SA for 21 years now. She was the vanguard in this matter and wrote 2 books about separation anxiety: first one “Treating separation anxiety in dogs” and the new one “Separation Anxiety in Dogs, Next Generation in Treatment Protocols and Practice” which are the guides for trainers and guardians to work with those issues. She has a certification for trainers, which is the one I graduated from. And another online course for guardians that want to work on the SA (follow the link for that https://courses.malenademartini.com?aff=67) . This conversation was super insightful and if you feel like you know all about SA, now you’ll realise there’s much more to it! If you'd like to ask any questions, you can send to me on instagram @positivedoglondon, link here. Working from home and Separation Anxiety

2/16/2022
Today, we'll talk about what most move the needle in Separation Anxiety training when working from home and how to fit it into your schedule when working from home. Everyone works from home nowadays and this can't impact your SA training! The most asked question in my instagram atm is: "How do I train separation anxiety if I work home office" When someone ask me this, what they actually mean is: I'm very worried about me being close to my dog for a long period of time everyday. But does that impact in your training? How do we train SA when working from home? --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/positivedogtraining/message

Crate training for separation anxiety unwrapped

1/18/2022
Crate training isn't home alone training. But what is the role of the crate in the home alone training then? There's a lot advise out there (pet professionals included!!!!) about crate training for leaving dogs alone in the house and a huge amount of judgment when everything goes wrong using it and you don't persevere. Crate training is an amazing tool for puppies and might be incredible for some adult dogs. I love crates, believe me! But not for home alone training. Understand the down sides of it and how you can use them in your training! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/positivedogtraining/message
