Alzheimer's and any other form of dementia is a brain disease. Often, we talk about our physical health, mental health, and even spiritual health, but few people consider or even mention the importance of keeping our brains healthy. On this episode of the podcast, I had the honor of sitting down with Kristal Cooley, the Alzheimer's Association Program Manager for Tallahassee, FL and surrounding areas, to discuss the association and the ways in which they are leading the way to end Alzheimer's and all other dementias. Kristal shares the different support services and programs offered by the Alzheimer's Association and how those who need the services can obtain them. November is National Family Caregivers Appreciation Month and all month long, I'll be sitting down talking with some amazing Caregiver Heros who deserved to be celebrated for the selfless care they are giving to their loved ones. Hospice began as a response to the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of patients and families facing a life-limiting illness. Only one in three eligible patients and families however, experience the benefits of hospice care. There are so many "myths" concerning hospice care that often keep people who need the help from getting it. On this week's episode, my guests and I will disprove those myths and share how the services and programs provided by Big Bend Hospice can benefit you and your family. I'm having the conversation because I, too, believed the myths and delayed on getting the help my mom and I desperately needed on our Care Journey. Today, we take full advantage of the services and programs offered and oh, what a relief it is!

The 2023 Alzheimer's Rally in Tally is being held February 7-8, 2023, in Tallahassee, Florida. High-quality dementia care training can lead to an improvement in communication between caregivers and individuals living with dementia, a reduction in dementia-related behaviors, and an increase in job satisfaction for staff. The Alzheimer's Association's Person-Centered Dementia Care Training Program offers just that! It educates professional care workers on evidence-based, person-centered practices to care for these persons. In this week's episode, I have a conversation with Katie Fahrenbruch, M.Ed., the Program Manager for the Alzheimer's Association, Central and North Florida Chapter. Katie and I discuss the "essentiALZ Traning, Certification, and Exchange Program that is being offered to direct care workers in long-term or community-based settings in the State of Florida. Research shows that Alzheimer’s disproportionately affects minorities, especially African Americans. African-American older adults are approximately two times more likely than non-Hispanic White older adults to develop Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Eighty percent of adults with dementia receive ongoing care in the home from family caregivers. Although caregiving demands are high across races and ethnicities, African Americans spend more time in caregiving activities than non-Hispanic Whites. They also are more likely than other caregivers to perform the most demanding caregiving tasks. Many African-American caregivers experience high levels of emotional distress and compromised health. In this episode, I have a conversation with Mrs. Tomeka Norton-Brown, the Project Coordinator for the ACTS2 Project, discussing their African-American Caregiver's Training & Support Program.
