Inclusivity - Finding Everyone’s Unique Beauty

3/26/2024
If you haven’t already, listen to my heartfelt chat with much-loved Australian personality Angie Kent here - https://youtu.be/hDPOsnUbgj0?si=795V3CJofboNu6TD Sadly, Angie’s experience with cosmetic treatments is a common one. In our chat, Angie revealed her experience from being overtreated to a 12-month period of painfully dissolving the treatment. Angie sparks a hugely important conversation on beauty standards and inclusivity. In this solo episode of reflection, I question why and how we initially and continue to get it all wrong. You see, Angie fell foul of the trend of the last few years, which is all about creating the same set of lips, cheeks, chins, and jawlines—essentially creating clones of each other. Not only is there nothing attractive, let alone beautiful, about this ‘look,’ but my colleagues and I need to consider carefully the unintended and harmful consequences on people's physical and mental health. It’s about time we embraced diversity in cosmetic medicine and focused on the uniqueness of every face we see. Beauty has many faces, so let's question the idea of a "perfect" face and remind ourselves of its subjectivity. Inclusive cosmetic medicine celebrates diversity, respects individual appearance, and shakes up the single beauty standard. However, this trend has a massive shortfall, and TGA and AHPRA are trying to rectify it. Is it too little, too late? Angie Kent Speaks Out AND All I Can Do Is Apologise

3/12/2024
In this powerful episode, our guest Angie Kent shares her personal experience with receiving treatment when she was vulnerable and struggling with her health both mentally and physically. In this sometimes heartbreaking interview, we discuss the damage that happens when injectors take advantage of their patients to perform unnecessary treatments. Angie bravely discusses firsthand the harm she experienced when a practitioner told her she looked bad and then promised the only way she’d look better was to have a lot of unnecessary treatment. Angie opens up about the impact that this particular period of overtreatment had on her life, extending far beyond her physical appearance. When I asked Angie what we could do to make it better, she asked for an immediate end to unethical practices, advocating for a more restrained and empathetic approach within the industry. Often during this episode, all I could do was listen and apologise to Angie for what she experienced. As a firm patient advocate and an empowerer of my fellow clinicians, I promised Angie that we’d keep the interview unedited and we’d share some pretty uncomfortable truths in an effort to make it better and to make it safer for all. Now, Angie is doing what Angie does best, being the best advocate for women’s health. She’s co-founded Seen_wh with Katie McCready and together they give a voice to womxn who’ve ever felt silenced and confused because of chronic health issues. Listening to Your Gut: Making a Plan to Reduce Stress and Eat Healthier

2/27/2024
Welcome back to the Difficult Conversations About Beauty Podcast. In our last episode, we had a deep dive conversation with Dr. Agnes Warchalowski about the crucial connection between our gut health, stress levels, and overall well-being. Dr. Agnes left us with two powerful action items: reducing processed food intake and minimising stress in our lives. Today, we're going to explore how to implement these steps, even when life throws unexpected challenges our way. After our insightful conversation with Dr. Agnes, I embarked on a journey to prioritise my health and well-being. However, life had other plans. Despite my intentions, I found myself in a whirlwind of stress, with circumstances well beyond my control amplifying my anxiety. Finding Solace on My Birthday: On my birthday, amidst the chaos, I took a moment to reflect on what truly brings me joy and comfort. It was a day of self-care, filled with writing, a rejuvenating massage, and a spontaneous decision to change up my look with a Taylor Swift-inspired fringe. These simple acts of self-love reminded me of the importance of nurturing my mind and body. The healing massage, unearthed buried emotions and allowed me to confront long-avoided decisions. Despite the challenges, I made a commitment to start the journey towards better health, just as Dr. Agnes advised. I recognised that healing is not always linear and requires patience and perseverance. Taking the First Steps: Although I hadn't achieved two weeks of reduced stress as initially planned, I made a conscious choice to begin. Dr. Agnes's words resonated with me - our bodies possess an incredible capacity to heal and regenerate. Even amidst adversity, I'm determined to prioritise my well-being and take small steps towards a healthier me. Finally, I encourage you to join me in embracing Dr. Agnes's advice. Let's commit to reducing stress and opting for nourishing, whole foods. Remember, healing is a journey, and every small step counts. Tune in next time for more insightful conversations on navigating the complexities of beauty and wellness. Thank you for listening to the Difficult Conversations About Beauty Podcast. Don't forget to subscribe and leave us a review. Until next time, take care of yourselves and listen to your gut instincts. Listening to your Gut with Special Guest Dr Agnes Warchalowski

2/13/2024
Speaking from experience is always the most authentic way to share knowledge, and Dr. Agnes walks the walk of 'chronic illness reformed' with nutritional medicine. However, not too long ago, Agnes was unable to walk at all. She relied on a walking stick due to severe joint pain. As a General Practitioner, Agnes knew there had to be a better way. How could she promote health to her patients when she herself was the picture of ill-health? In this episode, Agnes and Anita discuss the rise in chronic conditions and the concerning trend of children now presenting with diseases that were once thought to be exclusive to aging. They explore the true causes of chronic conditions and inflammation, which can severely impact health and the way we look. The episode also delves into the manipulation of messages. They shed light on what we're being told to believe, all in the name of freedom of choice, and the motivations behind those messages. Hint: often the same people create the problem and then offer the solution. Lastly, Agnes and Anita discuss longevity research and solutions. They provide insights on how you can take control of your health and the health of your loved ones. The Rise and Rise of James Vivian, Changing your Perception of Skin One Peel at a Time

9/25/2023
Description: Difficult Conversations About Beauty. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Host: Anita East. https://www.anitaeast.com/about Podcast guest: James Vivian, Dermal Therapist | https://jamesvivian.com.au/ Founder of multi-award winning skin clinic - 'James Vivian' in Melbourne | Innovator | Lover of music | NSS Scientific Committee member | Today, we have a special guest on Difficult Conversations About Beauty, episode 14. I recently had the pleasure of speaking with James Vivian, the founder of the multi-award-winning skin clinic, 'James Vivian' in Melbourne. We delved into James' remarkable journey in the world of skin health and his rise to success. During our conversation, James shares the incredible growth his clinic experienced during the lockdown period, going from a two therapist to an eight therapist clinic almost overnight. We also discuss James' transition from being a singer-songwriter to a dermal therapist and how his alter ego, Tina Toner, allows him to combine a love for skin and a love of performing through witty songs that educate followers and fans on achieving dream-worthy skin. One of the key highlights of James' clinic is their commitment to customer service. Every client who steps into the clinic receives a tailored treatment that caters specifically to their skin needs. With a multitude of clinics offering various treatments, James emphasises the importance of only providing services that will truly benefit ALL of their clients, ensuring that their five treatment rooms are free from passing and expensive fads that will only suit a few. Chemical peels are among James' and my personal favourites. Our clients at Anita East Medispa have been enjoying the benefits of chemical peels for over a decade. Whether it's addressing pigmentation, rosacea, sun damage, aging, wrinkles, milia, or acne, chemical peels have proven to be a versatile solution for all. As they say, out with the old skin and in with the new. James Vivian's expertise and dedication to providing exceptional skincare services have rightfully earned him the prestigious title of 2023 Australian Beauty Industry Awards winner. In a world where everyone is eager to learn more about taking care of their skin, James Vivian continues to lead the way, empowering individuals to achieve their skin goals. Little Old Lady

8/11/2023
Narrated by 8 year old Daisy <3 Once upon a time, a baby girl was born with ‘something special.’ No other baby born in the past or indeed in the future would ever have her exact 'something special.’ Convinced that her friends, her family, and people she’d never met but she saw on social media had a ‘something special’, she searched everywhere for hers. By the time she was 18 and now a young woman, she’d managed to convince herself that she was the only one alive who didn’t have a ‘something special.’ So, she decided to get help. She hired experts who promised they were skilled at creating a ‘something special’ from scratch. She copied what the influencers on her social media feed had done to themselves to show off their, ‘something special.’ But sadly, it was all useless. She still couldn’t find it anywhere. Her 'something special' always remained elusive… Anita’s Socials: www.facebook.com/anitaeastauthor/ www.instagram.com/anitaeast_ www.youtube.com/channel/UC_bXeZS4a9OOFZUVAw29Y7Q www.linkedin.com/in/anitaeast www.twitter.com/AuthorAnitaEast Book and Online Shop https://www.anitaeast.com/beautiful-unique-faces-book-second-edition https://anitaeast.com.au/shop/

From Science to Aesthetics: Exploring Embryonic Stem Cells in the Cosmetic Industry Part 2

7/14/2023
I thoroughly enjoyed the second part of my interview with life and behaviour philosopher, science guru extraordinaire, and all-round awesome dude, Dean Kilby. And I know you will love listening, too. If you haven’t listened to the first part of my interview with Dean, please do so now. Click to Listen Part 1 In the second part, we discuss the importance of our mind set, our thinking patterns and how to get to that higher and healthier level of thinking. The good news is, it’s not difficult at all and with just a few reminders like these below, I’ve been on my way to higher level thinking since recording the episode. These actions can help facilitate deeper thinking and greater creativity, which can be difficult to achieve when solely relying on internal thought processes. By prioritising these strategies, we can all increase our capacity for generating innovative ideas and solutions. The Power of Mindful Decision-Making Making impulsive decisions based on our internal state can often result in negative consequences. This is especially true when we are feeling unhappy or stressed. In these situations, we are more likely to make rash decisions that can create even more problems, leading to further stress and dissatisfaction with life. However, it's not just the immediate decision that can cause problems. It's the accumulation of issues that can make us feel overwhelmed and helpless, as if we are trapped between a rock and a hard place. This can lead to feelings of resignation and cynicism, leaving us wondering how we got to this point. I created my Unique Beauty Affirmation cards as a gentle reminder for creating better mindsets and healthier and happier lives. Finally, listen here to find out how our gut microbiome makes us behave in a certain way. Dean and I discuss a fascinating recent development around stool transplants. The idea that your gut is your second brain, is certainly gaining traction through scientific proof. Another indicator why your overall health in important in helping you make decisions that will make you happier and healthier. From Science to Aesthetics: Exploring Embryonic Stem Cells in the Cosmetic Industry

6/9/2023
Feeling Lost in a World of Endless Health Advice? Here's What You Need to Know Today's world is constantly bombarded with health advice that promises to improve our physical and mental well-being—from fad diets to miracle supplements, figuring out what works and what doesn't, can be overwhelming. You're not alone if you feel lost amidst this sea of information. In my podcast Difficult Conversations About Beauty, we dive into some hard-hitting topics with science and health expert Dean Kilby to explore how our diets and mindset affect our overall health and beauty. We'll also learn practical tips to overcome common roadblocks and shift towards a healthier lifestyle. My interview with Dean revealed some eye-opening insights about our relationship with food and our bodies. Dean suggests that we often eat poorly because we're disconnected from our physical selves. Instead of viewing our bodies as a "skin bag," he encourages us to approach our health objectively. This mindset shift can lead to a more intuitive, mindful approach to eating, where we listen to our bodies and nourish them accordingly. Dean reminds us that our bodies are not just a means to an end but an integral part of our well-being. Dean also emphasized the importance of movement in our daily lives. He notes that we often sit for prolonged periods, leading to stiffer joints and poor posture. Dean suggests incorporating more natural movement throughout the day, such as taking short walks or doing gentle stretches. This keeps our bodies limber and boosts our mental clarity and mood. Dean describes how our physical and mental well-being go hand in hand and that caring for both is crucial for holistic health. One significant takeaway from Dean's interview is the idea of "stop caring so much.' We spend so much time caring about our thoughts and feelings, but they're just that, thoughts and feelings. They are not us. They do not define us. This may sound flippant, but it's a powerful mindset shift that can help us overcome roadblocks in our health journey. Dean explains that we often create stories in our minds that hold us back from making positive changes. We may believe we're not disciplined enough or that a healthy lifestyle is too expensive or time-consuming. However, Dean suggests that we can choose to let go of these stories and focus on our "why"—our underlying motivation for wanting to improve our health. Doing so allows us to break through these roadblocks and create lasting change. Finally, Dean emphasizes the importance of being up to something bigger than ourselves. He notes that we see a greater purpose in our health journey when we shift our focus from internal struggles to external impact. This purpose can provide the motivation and inspiration to continue pursuing a healthier lifestyle, even when challenging. Dean encourages us to find a cause or community that resonates with us and use that to drive positive changes. In summary, feeling lost in a world of endless health advice is a common struggle many faces. However, by adopting a mindset of objectivity, incorporating movement into our daily lives, embracing the idea of "stopping giving a f*," and finding a greater purpose, we can overcome roadblocks and make lasting changes to our physical and mental well-being. Dean's insights provide a refreshing perspective beyond quick fixes and instead focus on holistic health. So the next time you feel overwhelmed by health advice, try applying some of Dean's tips and see how they positively impact your life. Flawed Reflections: Understanding BDD

5/20/2023
Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is a health condition where a person obsesses over one or more perceived flaws in their appearance. AHPRA, our governing body, has recently put new regulations in place for practitioners who perform cosmetic medicine. Starting July 1st, practitioners must follow specific guidelines for patient care, including referrals, consent, social media use, and more. While we're happy about these improved standards, there are some areas that need clarification. That's why we spoke with Dr. Toni Pikoos. Toni is a therapist and psychologist who specialises in BDD and body image. We met at an Aesthetic Medicine conference in Melbourne last year, where I discussed ethical patient treatment and Toni talked about BDD. Toni was on AHPRA's advisory panel for these new regulations, and she shares her insights on how clinicians can meet the new regulations, how patients can stay safe and seek mental health treatment if necessary, and interesting information for all our listeners with an interest in psychology. Screening tools. The BDDQ - DV screening tool currently in use is good but has its limitations. If you answer "NO" to question 1, "Are you worried about how you look?" the following questions are irrelevant and don't need an answer. Toni agrees that this questionnaire might miss subtle nuances in a patient's behaviour. I use Leslie Fletcher's questionnaire with good effect in my clinical practice. It's called "Development of a multiphasic, cryptic screening protocol for body dysmorphic disorder in cosmetic dermatology" and it allows a grading system of assessment. While Toni endorses this tool, she's also creating her own and it will be available on her website https://www.readymind.com.au/ before July 1st. Psychologists who specialise in body image disorders are prepared for our referrals, with communication ensuring awareness of the patient's progressions. Toni and her colleagues have put in place measures to ensure a timely turnaround, recognizing that patients and practitioners don't want to wait in limbo for appointments despite long waitlists for mental health assessments. Can BDD be cured? Toni suggests that the way a patient presents can be influenced by their life circumstances. For instance, a person may feel aesthetically inferior due to input from someone else, which leads to BDD behaviours. Additionally, feeling a lack of control during a certain period can also contribute to BDD. However, with proper assistance, a person can overcome these challenges and cultivate a positive self-image. The Future. Most practitioners will continue to do the right thing, but there will always be a small number who do not. They will neglect to provide proper assessments for those with body dysmorphic disorder, treat patients who are not safe to treat, and take advantage of vulnerable individuals for financial gain. These practitioners do not care and will not follow guidelines, potentially driving cosmetic medicine further underground and creating a black market. However, those of us who care for our patients will continue to uphold high standards of care and protect them. This is how we ensure the safety of our loved ones in the world of beauty - and for that, we thank you. Links Toni is holding a webinar on Wednesday 31st May for cosmetic practitioners. This means feeling amazing whether you're about to enter a room full of people or sitting alone with a coffee, pondering the day ahead. I asked the behaviour and communication specialist, Grazina Fechner this exact question, and you won't believe the simple hacks she shared with me. As many of our interactions are now virtual, we are becoming less adept at authentic in- person communication and less confident in showcasing our genuinely unique personalities. We are constantly bombarded with distractions from morning to night, and this affects not only me but also my children. It's hard to concentrate on anything, be it work or leisure when there are constant notifications and so many exciting things vying for our attention. As I write these podcast show notes, I find myself checking my email, messages, and social media repeatedly, which breaks my concentration. Being present in our lives is a challenge. Podcast link: In this episode, we speak with Griz from Front and Centre Training. Griz shares her knowledge and expertise to help you become the best version of yourself. You may have seen Griz on Channel 7, where she serves as an expert on communication. I uncovered some real gems in my episode with Griz. Please feel free to use and share them with the people you know. The more of us who practice these, the better. 1. SAY ALL THE GOOD THINGS How we communicate with ourselves is just as important as how we communicate with others. If you tell yourself that you're frightened and anxious, the situation will likely play out that way. Instead, talk to yourself like you're talking to someone you love. Say kind, encouraging things to yourself, and not only will you succeed, but you'll also enjoy yourself more. 2. BODY POSING The quickest and easiest way to reduce the levels of cortisol - the modern-day killer - and increase dopamine and testosterone is to make ourselves big and strong like Wonder Woman and Superman. By making yourself big for two minutes before starting any situation, you can transform into your own personal washing machine. This will help wash those nasty neurotransmitters out of your bloodstream and replace them with uplifting and nourishing brain chemicals to make you feel amazing. 3. CHECK YOUR LANGUAGE When speaking with others, avoid phrases like "I hope..." or "I'm sorry", but I hope this is okay..." Instead, try phrases such as "I'm excited to be here with you today!" or "You're going to love this!" Using positive language can turn the person or people you're speaking to into instant cheerleaders, making them want you to succeed and increasing your chances of winning. and finally… 4. MAKE ME FEEL GOOD When you greet someone, imagine they are wearing a sign around their neck that says, "Make me feel good" Your job in the interaction is simply to make the other person or people feel good. By breaking it down to such a simple task, you instinctively already know a million and one ways to make someone feel good. Look Before You Leap - Safety in Cosmetic Medicine

3/30/2023
In my podcast – Difficult Conversations About Beauty, the good, the bad, and the ugly, we like to get to the nitty-gritty of all things beauty. In my podcast's “Look Before You Leap” series, we examine everything you need to consider when having a non-surgical cosmetic medicine treatment. In this episode, I’m chatting with Bronwyn Granata from AMET about safety in non-surgical cosmetic medicine. With an 18-year background in aesthetic medicine spanning the globe, Bron has worked in management within pharma companies. As a Registered Nurse, Bronwyn Granata is perfectly placed to set up AMET with co-founder Elena Currie. AMET, which stands for Aesthetic Medical Emergency Team, is the first of its kind in Australia. Offering 24/7 support for all aesthetic practitioners, AMET is all about complication prevention and management. So many complications that arise in aesthetics are avoidable; however, even the most experienced practitioner will still encounter adverse events. So much so that Bron and I discuss the latest research demonstrating that one in three practitioners will encounter a vascular occlusion or VO in our careers. At a recent conference in Sydney, almost every practitioner I spoke to had experienced a VO. Since Bron and I have both experienced the horror of a VO, the likelihood of it happening seems much higher than 30%. Bron and I go into candid detail, about the moments we both realised that our patient was experiencing a VO. We discuss the harrowing timeline of events that followed and how we overcame the situation. Again, not to scare our listeners but of paramount importance is your clinician’s knowledge and the support available to them not if but when they experience any adverse event. Dermal fillers, anti-wrinkle injections, and all treatments bring a level of expected side effects and risks, such as pain, redness, bruising, and swelling. But there are more serious adverse events for patients to be aware of, too. For example, lumps, bumps, infections, pain escalating to vascular occlusions, skin necrosis, blindness, stroke, and death. As practitioners, we have a duty of care to inform our patients of these possible risks and side effects. Thankfully most people only ever encounter very mild effects, such as a bit of pain at the injection site or bruising. However, we must inform you about all possibilities. JUST IN CASE. The most critical advice for someone thinking about, or who wants to support someone thinking about getting cosmetic injectable enhancements; Communicate with your practitioner. If you are unsure about something ~ ASK. Can EFT TAPPING make you feel more beautiful?

3/15/2023
Emotional Freedom Technique – also called EFT or simply Tapping is the idea of stimulating the body’s acupressure meridian points by simply tapping your fingers on different parts of your body, all while considering an experience, and repeating an affirmation. Acupressure and meridian points have been utlised in healthcare for thousands of years, but tapping has only been around since the 1990s, after being developed in its current form by engineer, Gary Craig. EFT now has over 300 scientific studies proving its efficacy in reducing stress, anxiety, and negative thought patterns. There are even studies to show the benefit of tapping in addressing illness and physiological pain. I have been using tapping for many years now. I really promote it for dealing with negative thought pathways you can find yourself in. It’s also great for helping you in those times when you just feel horrible in your skin and don’t like anything about yourself or the way you look. Athletes use it in prep for and during a comp, businesspeople use it before a meeting, performers use it before stepping on stage, teachers use it before greeting their class, some use it before a date, some use it before getting out of bed, some use it as they walk out of their front door to start the day. Everyone can and does use tapping. When we imagine a painful situation, we now know that our brain and body, create pain and physical responses to it. For example, if we think about a painful experience we have endured, the amygdala part of our brain tells us we are going through it there and then gets ready to encounter it. Stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol increase, and our body reacts as though we need to fight or flight. If, however, we relive or address a situation that causes us pain or stress while tapping the meridian points, we now know that our amygdala becomes less active, meaning it reduces the stress associated with that particular fear or stressful situation. We have evidence-based and robust studies demonstrating that after tapping, participants experienced significant decreases in anxiety, depression, PTSD, pain, and cravings, and a significant increase in happiness The thing I love most about tapping is that it’s self-soothing and can be done anywhere without anyone even noticing. It also really grounds me and takes me out of my head and into the present moment. The script is somewhat the same, but you can mix it up to suit you and the situation you want to address. The meridian points are as follows: Holding your right-hand pointer and middle finger together, tap on each of the areas described below. Karate chop (right-hand pointer and middle finger together and tap the underside edge of your left hand).Between the eyebrows (hairy brow). The temple (wise temple).Beneath the eye (teardrop).Beneath the nose (moustache). On the chin (beard).Beneath the collar bone.Below the armpit.Links to all Anita’s Socials: https://www.facebook.com/anitaeastauthor/ https://instagram.com/anitaeast_ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_bXeZS4a9OOFZUVAw29Y7Q https://www.linkedin.com/in/anitaeast https://twitter.com/AuthorAnitaEast https://anita-2022.medium.com/

From Princess to Queen: Celebrating Beauty at Every Age

3/3/2023
This week on Difficult Conversations About Beauty – Beauty Through the Ages, I chatted with Kathryn Lister, my good friend and confidante. Having turned 50 just last year, Kathryn knows what it's like to go from feeling obsessed with slim thighs and smooth skin to being happy to lift stuff without her body breaking. A true Queen in the sense of my book philosophy, Kathryn adores relishing young women's beauty and nurturing their chance to Princess with grace. For she, too, has had her time as a beautiful young Princess. We discuss the importance of removing competition between women, understanding the importance of all ages in workplaces, and the power of celebrating one another. As the wonderful Jameela Jamil said, "Happy people aren't hating, and hating people aren't happy." With a background much like my own, Kathryn started her adult life as an actor performing in the UK and Australia. And as a writer, she, like myself, is happiest when conjuring titillating stories in her mind. After a chardy or two, you can imagine how we stimulate one another’s imagination. Often writing whole scripts on one night out. Kathryn can't identify why or when it happened, but one day in her late 40s, she realised joy isn’t found in trying to be physically perfect. Instead, Pilates, long lunches with friends, a cup of tea and a book, and a strong, healthy body were where Kathryn's joy now lay. And while being 50 means she'll probably be overlooked for that leading lady role as Bond's love interest, Kathryn knows that growing older is a privilege many are denied, which is a true honour. Breaking Barriers: A 37-Year Old Mum's Unique Outlook on Beauty in a Perfect-Obsessed Culture

2/16/2023
In my podcast, Difficult Conversations About Beauty – The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, I examine Unfiltered Beauty Through the Ages having candid chats with women of all ages, including teens and women in their 30s, 50s, and 70s. We discuss tricky and often uncomfortable things affecting women regarding beauty and self-image. But importantly, we make important discoveries that can help you and those you love today. I met 37-year-old Brooke as a school mum a few years ago, and we quickly became firm friends. In fact, she is one of my favourites. An aura that radiates true inner beauty, meant I needed to chat with Brooke about self-image, her unique outlook on the world, and how as a mum to three daughters, she strives to impart positive self-love to each. A schoolteacher of the arts, Brooke is currently using her creative ability in training to be a cosmetic tattoo artist, a career she has longed to pursue. As a teacher, Brooke spends her time surrounded by little people who, she claims, regularly teach her something new about herself and life. As a cosmetic tattoo artist, Brooke is delighted to work mostly with women whom, like me, she adores. Women are pretty incredible. Take Brooke, for example, a busy and present mum, thriving in two fulfilling careers. Brooke believes joy is found in enjoying a varied life. In this image-crazed culture any parent will profess the importance of our kids' mental health. Brooke's daughters are her universe. Her unique experience as a teacher, mum, and now beauty practitioner, Brooke's outlook on keeping her girls safe in this 'perfect face,' 'perfect body' obsessed culture is at the forefront of her mind. Having daughters nearing the ages of social media, importance lies in building our girls' self-esteem with all they are and all they do, as opposed to what they look like. The likes will always bring a false dopamine hit, but true and honest connections with others remains the only way to feel beautiful in your skin. Our children will endure heartbreak from thinking they are not beautiful enough. They’ll want to look anything but how they do. By complimenting others, finding the beauty in the small and large things around them, and discovering their own Unique Facial Feature, our own daughters and yours will feel beautiful when society is trying to convince them otherwise. Croissants in a French Patisserie aren’t identical. You peruse each and carefully select the one that takes your fancy. One delicious croissant jumps out. Alone, it whets your appetite and makes your stomach grumble in anticipation. Your face are no different. Ready in your uniqueness to whet the appetite of those you honestly connect with. Your uniqueness makes you most attractive. The imperfections, small nuances that make you more beautiful. Faces that have the exact same facial features by way of cosmetic enhancement, become less attractive. It's also your perceived imperfections and those in your life that shape you to discover what you truly value in relationships. To desire perfection in every aspect only sets us up for painful failure, where joy cannot possibly exist. A valuable reminder is that happy people are the most beautiful people, and the most beautiful people are those who are happy. Experiences that leave you with the warm glow of love and acceptance are the places, people, and experiences you want to seek. Spend your time here. Knowing this about yourself makes you resilient. No one can boost your self-esteem like you can. Finally, honesty and integrity in relationships, including your most important relationship, the one with yourself. Be brave and true. Know yourself deeply and make wonderful connections throughout your rich and fulfilling life. To learn the best approach for discovering your unique beauty and how to keep young women and girls’ beauty safe, listen here.

Unfiltered Beauty: A Teen's Surprising Journey

2/4/2023
Georgia is my 19-year-old niece and one of the faces of our skincare range for teens - BU Unique Teen. Georgia has completed her first year of university and is doing a double degree of humans services and justice majoring in policy and governance. She is a remarkable young woman and has incredible curiosity. Her passion for life and making a difference in this world is contagious and spending time with her brings joy to my life. In our chat with Georgia, we discuss the importance of identifying and then embracing your own beauty. How dangerous comparing yourself to others in the final years of high school can be to your mental health. And how doing things that bring you joy is the most authentic way to make you beautiful. We discuss the trend amongst young women, and by that, I mean women as young as 18 years old, who are being sold the idea that to be beautiful, they must buy the lips, cheeks, jawline, and all manner of cosmetic medicine injectables. Social media is a minefield for teens today, and together Georgia and I explore how teens can get trustworthy news and deal with the photos of picture perfects on their feeds.
